3K - A story about a gift.

Thank you Sodak. I will deffinatly tell her that you said that. She will love it. My mom is a special woman. I deffinalty could not do the work she does. They admit. around 30-40 patients a month and around 20 of them pass away the first month on Hospice. Once again i dont know how she does it but your kind words will help. Thanks again Sodak.

Sodak- I have to agree with this. My dad used to be on hospice care and my wife used to be a hospice nurse so, I have met a few of them and I have heard some stories. It takes a REALLY special person to do this work.

Yeah, I dealt with hospice care for my parents before they died, and I can't say enough good things about them. It really restores your faith in humanity when you meet folks that work in hospice. There are still some good people in this world, and hospice folks are up at the top, IMO.

Ok, I have thought about this one for awhile. I dont want to take anything away from the hospice nurse, but I have a possible canidate for you. Now I am sure that the nurse from Chico,(howdy we are almost neighbors) is far more deserving but if you are looking for an arrogant, obnoxious young man to help set out along a healthy path then I have someone in mind. No not me, I am no longer young. In Feb. of this year my 13, now 14, yr old nephew came to live with me and my family. He was taken from his parents when he was about 3 or 4 and adopted by my Dad and stepmom. His mom, my step sister, has spent most of her adult life in jail or in a glass pipe. His uncle died of a drug overdose at about age 35. While my Dad and stepmom mean well and love my nephew they also raised his mom and uncle. They are well to do professional type people but they lack what is called "parenting skills". Anyway to make a long story short my wife and I intervened because we have the best background to help and really I dont want him to die.
When I picked him up we went straight to an outdoor class in Pasadena. He made fire many ways including a bow drill.

This is from the first time he ever went camping this April.

I had to sleep in the hammack behind the tent because he was afraid of bears.
This is us at the beach collecting mussels. (My C'DL, Idaho Hat)

We go on hikes here in the neighborhood and have hobo night in the backyard.
Here he is with the start of his survival kit on his back.

Fire blowing a bowl. Of course it has to be the biggest bowl possible.

We have also been doing some freediving. In fact this past weekend he spent the money he was saving for an X-box on a wet suit.

Man, it has been a long couple of months. It feels like every 2 steps we make forward we go back 1.9. I cant even count the hours I have spent dealing with teachers, principals, super intendants, police recently but every now and then I am amazed by some progress he makes. Really he is a great kid. He is generally very polite and respectful. He even works hard when asked right and is helpful. He just needs a lot right now.

Now maybe I shouldnt be posting pics of him or revealing so much personnal info on here but I am really a "lay your sh*t on the table and own it" kinda guy. Thank you MDP for your post. It gives me hope. To me sometimes survival is about overcoming lifes obstacles and sometimes wilderness skills can save your life in more ways than one.

Thanks
Matt

I just graduated college...and my roomate is a kid who grew up squatting the L.E.S. of nyc...he is a great kid but has fallen on hard times. this year his mother (his only family) passed away, and he had no money for a spring break or anything so i told him we could spend a week in the woods. We ended up going to the Adironkacks' Pharoah lake wilderness for 7 days and he loved it. He was using all of my extra gear and gear i borrowed from friends. I gave him one of my moras and also a victoronox camper, but besides that he has no gear of his own. I think he is a great candidate for this kit, as we are planning a few more jaunts into the woods this summer. Also somehow on my move out of the house some of my gear was either lost or stolen so i dont have all of my extras like i did in the spring.

have you gifted this kit out yet? i assume the nurse got it? im just wondering cause im about to go to the catskills with my roomate in a few weeks and i have to make him a list of things he has to buy if he can.

Hey 'Ol Bud I'm past my 1000 post, closer to 1500, I really didn't know what to do either so for my 1000+ post give away I'll throw in a small FieldLine RealTree (I think thats the pattern) Fanny pack, it should hold all that Equipment you got there nicely  Send me your Address & I'll ship it to you next week so you can put the kit togather ;)

coaldigger - Bum bag showed up, I will take a picture later tonight....

Well, I think there have been some very good suggestions...

And it was a bit of a challenge, because a kit would probably do some good for a number of different people.

But, in the spirit of my story, I have chosen, and I will be giving the kit to the kid that Oakietree suggested.

I think that his situation is best fitting with the spirit of my giveaway, and I think that he could really get some good active use out of the kit.

Thank you,
Marion

I really really thank you MDP and Coaldigger. I am sorry it has taken me so long to reply about your generous gift. I really dont know what to say. I know he will appreciate it so much and I will be sure to post some pics of him using the gear. Next weekend we are suposed to do an 8 hour kayak trip on the eel river. If it arrives by then I am sure he will put some of it to good use.

On friday, one of his classmates shot himself in the head. He didnt survive. It is such a fucking tragedy. Being a teen can be such a hard time. Everything can be so big and important and overwhelming when you dont have the perspective that age brings.

I am not really sure how things are going to unfold for him in the future so all I can do is introduce him to as many positive, healthy things as possible. He is going to be so excited by the new gear. I ll have to say I entered him in a contest or something. Maybe a photo contest. Then I ll tell him I won because I took the picture. HAHAHAHa.

Thanks again
Matt
