4" fixed blades at or under $100

I'm pretty sure the first run was $100 + sheath. If not, I'm truly sorry for getting people excited.

It could've been, he has different prices depending on steel and handle material. I was just playing with ya:thumbup::D

Ka-Bar # 1461 Impact spear point in D2 steel - about $67 plus shipping, sheath included. Might need to thin out the grips a tad, but that's no big deal. Grab a file and get to it.

The Enzo Trapper comes in either a kit form or a finished knife. I bought the blade only and added maple burl handle slabs and it's one serious bushcraft knife.

Benchmade 201 Activator I love mine. Cuts like a laser, and holds it's convexed edge forever.

The Cabela's sourced Buck Vanguard in S30V is a great ~$100 bargain. It was too pretty for the woods, so I carried it's regular 420HC sibling woods stomping before my 'enlightenment'. The longer new model, Kalinga Pro in S30V, is a beauty - and judicious shopping should bring one home for ~$100.

If you can rattle the piggy bank a bit harder, the Bark Rivers in basic green, black, or natural micarta are great values. My favorite is my Gameskeeper, followed closely by my Fox River and '07 LE North Star. Figure $130-$140+. They were my 'enlightenment'.

Now, if you want a great nearly 4" folder - for a fourth of your C-note - march to Wally World for a Buck 110. Spend the other 3/4 of that bill on a Cabela's Alaskan Guide 110 - again, in S30V.

I'd consider a Linder Super Edge a nice practical handful. Every bit as ugly as the F1, so for use not for show on forums. ATS 34 at 60 Rockwell and 5mm thick. I bet they're about $100 USD if you shop around. I saw one on Amazon for around that a while back. The way I use knives I'm sure it would humble any of those RATs for starters.

I have an Ontario Rat-3 from before the spit-up of RAT away from Ontario. I find it a good knife that can be had for a great value. While Ontario RATs come in 3" (RAT-3), 4 5/8" (TAK) and 5"(RAT-5) I can only imagine that the RC-4 from RAT Cutlery would serve you well.

Kaleb Reynolds(Muskrat Man) on knifeforums.com,makes a very high quality knife for the money. It might be just a tad over 100.00 but worth it.

Benchmade has the Mel Pardue designed Rant (which is slightly over 4") but is a fantastic knife for the money. I've never had any problems with 440C and the balance on this knife is fantastic. Probably not as tough as a RAT but I got mine for under $50.00 (with a great sheath) and it's a useful camping / utility knife when I don't feel like hauling around my Becker collection. Dollar for dollar this is one of my favorites.

Looks like a great user to me. I've got no qualms about 440C, and I'd find no reason at all to trade the properties of it for something that may be a tad tougher, 'cos I don't use small knives in isolation. My big choppers need the toughness. Focusing on toughness would be lost on the little ones for me, unless they were the only cutting tool I had with me and I expected to abuse it.

I like the SOG Field Pup.

It's under $40.00 and they are easy to find. Mine has the black leather sheath, but some come with the kydex. If you order one, you can always get a sheath seperate from SOG.

It has AUS 8 steel, thick stock, and a 4" blade. Great deal if you ask me.

Here's the link to one: http://sogknives.com/store/FP-3.html
