4 Inch + folder?

So I've been looking around at different larger folding knives, and I'm curious as to what some people here would recommend for a large folding knife. I was looking at ZT 0560 and Microtech Socom Elite (Which is sold out everywhere!)

Try the MicroTech Socom Delta since you already like the Socom Elite and it has a 4" blade. The ZT 0560 series is "only" 3.75".

For 4"+ blades there are also ZT 0200, ZT 0600, Benchmade Contego (M4 or M390), Fantoni HB01, Spyderco Military (even a titanium FrameLock), Spyderco Szabo, Brous T4, Hogue EX-04, etc.

I just recently acquired my first Emerson and have been thrilled with it. Their Super Commander and Super CQC-8 are two great options over 4 inches. Even their standard sized knives are generally over 3.75". They're a bit overpriced for the materials you get, but you can get some pretty decent deals on the secondary market. Plus, if you're looking at Microtechs you probably don't consider this to be a major issue. Some people don't like the chisel grind (myself included), but that's nothing an hour or so on a stone won't fix.

Just because you gave size as the only parameter I just have to do this:
  • Opinel #12
  • Opinel #13
  • Opinel Slim Line #12

:p

Then there is Cold Steel with some really big folders:
  • Pocket Bushman (4.5 ")
  • Spartan (4.5 ")
  • Talwar #21TTXL (5.5 ")
  • XL Recon 1 (5.5 ")
  • Extra Large Voyager (5.5 ")
  • Lg G-10 Espada (#62NGL) (5.5 ")
  • XL G-10 Espada (#62NGX) (7.5 ")

Don't have any of the Cold Steels yet, but they definately are BIG ;)

Cold Steel does definitely have the market cornered on huge folders. They have some really interesting designs and are certainly very heavy-duty, but they're disgustingly overpriced given the substandard AUS-8 steel. I have had very poor experiences with their AUS-8, it started to noticeably rust on me in a matter of weeks despite only seeing light use and being oiled every other day. And I live in a mostly arid environment. It was almost like it was 1095 or something.

Spyderco has a ~5" bladed knife lined up for 2014 with a new and supposedly extremely strong lock. The Tatanka.

I have had a totally different experience worth their aus8. Also, it's difficult to say the large and extra large voyagers are over priced.

That's true, I forgot how cheap they were. For some reason I thought they were in the same range as the Espadas.

Thankfully not!

I think them along with the other suggestions in this thread will do op good.

Yes. Reminds me that there's also the Spyderco Ulize with a 4.1" narrow blade weighing under 5 ounces.

My beastliest folder is still the Fox Knives Trakker Meskwaki with a 5.3" blade of N690 that's 0.19" thick. It's a back lock with a secondary lock, pouche and sheath. Heavy at nearly a pound!

Check out the SOG Kiku. I'm not generally keen on SOG knives, but the Kiku was worth my attention. The Ontario Hossom Retribution 1, the Mykel Hawke Harrier, and also +1 on the Fox Trakker Meskwaki. The Spyderco Police 3 also exceeds 4".

My Cold Steel Recon XL...

+1 for the recon XL. Or if money doesn't matter ZT 0600 or one of my two favorites:

CRKT Otanashi Noh Ken, Viper Knives Start or Rhino, HTM Mad Maxx, Fox Col Moschin, Spyderco Szabo, Sog Spec Elite 2, and Fox/Citadel Deimos. The Deimos would be my personal choice, it's honestly pretty light for what you get, decent steel, very comfortable handle and very good blade-to-ratio. It's also relatively inexpensive.

I had a similar problem with my Spartan until I read a post on AUS8-a steel. The suggestion I got from the post was to lightly polish the entire blade with an extreamly high grit (I used some 3000 grit metal polish). I am in no way a pro with steel but the post said that AUS8-a was very prone to micro pitting under the microscope thus causing the mini rust spots. After I buffed it and oiled it once I have not had any more problems (and I EDC it in my back left pocket).

Back to the topic at hand....I would recommend a CS, or a ZT. That Tatanka looks pretty sweet too! Maybe even a RAT1 (close to 4 inches)

Yup. It's the bead blasted finish more than the AUS 8. The same dusting of rust spots has happened to me with AUS 8, VG-10 and even 440C with a bead blast.

Thanks for the info! Time to polish a few more of my stash that have that finish!

Also for the OP: Hogue makes some nice 4" folders
