As a way of saying thank you to all who have contributed to the traditional sub-forum I have decided to give away 4 knives. To make it interesting this will be a mystery gaw. Once the winners have been selected by a random # gen. I may post pics. or I may wait, haven't decided. The knives range in age from the 70's to present. Here are the rules:

1. GAW is for Traditional Sub-Forum users only.
2. Must have 300 post in the Traditional Sub-Forum to enter once.
3. If you have more than 600 in the Traditional you may enter 2 times.
4. If Mods so choose they may enter 4 times for all they do.
5. Post "I am in" and a number between 1 and 4.
6. (OPTIONAL) Post any info that will help newbies like myself who are learning. Tips, Cautions, things you wish you knew when you were green. Please post things other than - read the rules, read more post less, or any that can be found in the sticky threads. Thanks.

* I would rather these knives not be modified but they will be yours to do with what you wish.
** The winners will be chosen on 7/26/2014. I will post an hour or so before closing.
*** I am opening this up to all locations but have never shipped over seas. Please be patient if you win. I work a lot and may need a few days to ship.

This is an amazing sub-forum with a great group of guys and gals. I have really enjoyed learning from you all and am thankful. Good luck!

Cool mystery giveaway. I am in with #2, thanks.

(I'll edit in some sage advice if I think of any :p )

I'm in, number 3 for my first entry.

If I had it to do all over again, I'd buy Rough Rider patterns until I found the couple I REALLY wanted, then get very nice examples of just those patterns. If you try a pattern and it doesn't "do it" for you, then get rid of it right away.

Not an entry just a thanks for the giveaway and a good luck with to everyone who enters.

The biggest piece of advice I can give you if you really want to get into traditional patterns, decide what you want to collect and why. Do you want to collect users or safe queens? Do you like a particular pattern or scale material? Are you fond of one particular manufacturer or are you interested in handmade? How about vintage or new?

The reason I say these things is that the traditional patterns out there are wide and varied, it's easy to get consumed by the desire to collect which quickly turns to accumulating. Before you know it you have such a diverse accumulation of knives but no real collection with any direction. So figure out what you like and start there.

I'm not saying accumulating knives is wrong I have a modest collection/accumulation of 300+ knives, compared to some here that's nothing but through the years, (40+) I've been collecting/accumulating I've developed many sub collections or collections within my accumulation. That's taken 40+ years to do though. It's a good thing I love almost all knives because the accumulation I have is very diverse and interesting to me to keep me happy.

Last piece of advice, buy what you like but research it well before you spend your hard earned money, try to buy the best that you can afford, you're less likely to be disappointed. Oh and I gotta say the read more post less advice is not meant to keep the new members in their place. It's just that there is a vast clearing house for information here, we are the largest knife specific forum on the the internet with the best of the best being represented here from custom makers, collectors, historians and CEOs of most manufacturers who just like you, come here for the community and friendships. That deserves some degree of respect for the time they volunteer and information they give freely and there's nothing wrong with that, a little respect goes a long way here. :)

Hope this helps and again thanks for the generosity and good luck everyone.

And since I'll probably forget this thread is in here after a while... I'm in and #4, please.

...and for #3.

Advice; humility goes a long way.
Buy what you want, not just because everyone says you should.

and get a peanut.

So that you can join the cult :)

I´m in - first post and I gonna choose #3

Thanks for the chance! What a great idea for a GA!

Nice idea sir  I'll pick 1.

My advice would be carefully persevere with your sharpening, when you get it right, it'll be very satisfying
