4 Sodbusters

The Case soddy looks better than mine. Looks like yours has a few black marks left from the buffing compound. Mine has gouges across the pins. Not pretty, but still serviceable. It was meant as a working knife, so I won't complain.

this makes me want to get a queen sodbuster in d2 and a 1" belt sander from harbor freight so I can get to work on it. I don't have the patience to freehand a convex edge on the d2, but I'd love to have one!

Well, I can confirm the times that I listed. Last night, I watched a couple movies and convexed the yellow one. About 3 hrs was right. It can still use another hour, due to a flat spot on the blade, but I have to get some more sandpaper first.

And, yes, my shoulder hurts!!!

Is that Bulldog an older model? I seem to remember the newer ones only having one dog on the etch because 2 dogs fighting was not considered p.c.--KV

Chewy, I think you have started trouble. I found a green bulldog sodbuster and I couldn't resist buying. Oh well, at least it's just $25.:)

I have a 4 5/8 Case sodbuster with black handles I got from Smoky Mountain a couple of years ago. The fit and finish is only fair and the blade wobbles side to side a lot. It reminds me of less expensive Pakistani construction. It's nowhere as well made as my three Rough Rider sodbusters. Nice and sharp, though, and it gets the job done. Does Case produce "seconds"?

I have lots of sodbusters, but all are Case. Maybe one day I will stumble into some of the other brands. I've never seen any on store shelves.
Sodbusters are my favorite pattern, and I love those you have.
Thanks for showing them all and for the comparisons.

I have one from Chech Slovakia but no other markings. Very strong back spring.

I have 3 Soddies by Case, Queen and Eyebrand. The Queen has a black handle and has the best fit and finish and spring action. Actually the spring on the Queen is a little on the stiff side but not a nail breaker and is acceptable. The Queen had a terrible butter knife DULL DULL edge. I thinned it down and sharpened it nicely on my 12 inch Norton India stone. Took about 20 minutes. The Case is a yellow handle that is nice with a very nice spring action just about right with a sharp edge in CV. Really the f&f on the Case is equal with the Queen but I had to look at a few Cases before I found this one that I liked. Both of these Soddies have no side play of blade. Both Soddies have centered blades. They seem to be strong sturdy knives that I would trust. The Eye Brand has some gaps between liner and handles and butt of handle has a slight gap between liner and handle. The Eye Brand has a weak or so so spring and it does not seem to be as sturdy as the Queen or Case. The blade is centered. The edge is very dull but sharpened nicely on my Norton India stone as it has a nice thin blade.

2 more sods to consider:

I have a German Bull Sodbuster, about the same size as a CASE jr but with some very fat stag, reasonable snap, very slight blade wobble in stainless. The stag is very 'grippy' the stainless is OK but nothing to write home about, good knife and looks well.

RR Old Yellow sodbuster. Rather slimmer than other sods, strong spring and a lot of snap. Well made, no gaps, no wobble at all, ultra sharp. Attractive shield. Extremely nice knife but could be a bit slim for some tastes, suits my pocket very well but not for those with a weak nail....

Thanks for pointing those out. I admit that I've kind of found my niche with soddies. When I get together some more $$, the first purchase is the black ss Case from Lowes. Then, who knows? The more the merrier, I always say.

My German Bull has really thin stag scales...kinda disappointing, really.

But I like the look of those Queen models. They are now on my list.

I might have to get one of those Queen Sodbusters and send it to Tom Krein to get rid of the factory edge and thin it down, make use of that D2 a bit.

I've always liked the Sod Buster style of knife. I used to carry one of those when I was a kid living on the farm in Ohio.

Thanks for the nice comparison.

Nice sodbusters and thanks for the comparison pictures! I've got a yellow case Jr.
Probably going to have to get a queen now!
