I've got $40 to spend on a knife. I prefer to have carbon steel, however handle material is up to debate. I'll leave it open for discussion for a few days and make my decision then. Ladies and Gentlemen, give me your best recommendation!

Couple different Opinels.

Have a good time picking out handle materials and shapes. Regular or slim.

Those sound like good ideas. I have been thinking about a Case Pen knife or an Opinel 6 in Walnut. Does anyone know of good USA dealers for English Lambsfoot knives or Otter-Messer knives?

Option 1: Case 62032 CV Small Texas Jack in Amber Bone.

Option 2: Case 3347 CV Stockman in yellow Delrin.

There are other options depending on your intended uses and preferences.

I agree with John, the Small Texas offers a nice knife in a compact frame, bone handles and 2 useful blades.

Look at Böker Germany, carbon knives e.g. Stockman, Whittler, Copperhead. I got a Copperhead new for 30 USD and these are decently finished knives, you may have to be a bit patient in finding one though.

If $40 is the limit to spend , I would head for the Antique Stores and look for some older Camillus . You could probably get a couple of real good ones and get $10 in change back .

I could also look into getting a knife refurbished... I don't know if $40 would cover the cost, but I do have an LF&C penknife that I would like to be able to carry.

New Case mini copperlock CV blade dark red bone is in your price range on the big auction site.

For $40, you might just be able to squeak out a couple of Opinels and a Mora no.1 or 612. That wouldn't cover any shipping, though.

Great ideas already given. I will throw a few in a the mix:
Kershaw Leek
Kershaw Hinderer Shield
Buck Prince a nice classic piece.
Spyderco Tenacious or maybe a Manbug
Any Byrd. I like the Cara Cara Rescue. Great utility blade.
Ontario Rat is a great working blade.

If you can find one, the Colt canoe with ringed nickle silver bolsters, black G10 covers, and titanium coated 1095 carbon steel blades (the ti looks like a nice, even patina)
Under $20.

There is a photo of one in the Order of the Canoe thread.

Opinel, Mora, Case CV, Otter, Boker - these are all great selections people have offered.

In addition to those others I'd be seriously considering a Victorinox Farmer SAK, if you don't have one. It's not carbon steel of course, but you can get a pretty fine edge on those blades.

In fact I'd scratch up a few extra bucks for one of the ano'd coloured ones from DLT Trading.

There's a Fundamental Problem with most of this lot: they're far from being Traditional, a Spyderco costing 40?? not much carbon either but.....
