$40 To Spend...

I'd be hitting the local flea markets and making some deals.
Much of my old knife collection is flea market and yard sale scores..
I've gotten some nice old Cases, Barlows, Old Timers and Imperials that way..

I have to agree with the folks recommending the Amber bone Case CV Texas Jack. It's a great knife.

+1 on Case CV in yellow delrin.Sodbuster Jr or trapper would be my choice. If looking for smaller size, go with the yellow CV pen.

Geta used Case knife. I bought my one and only Case knife on a whim on Ebay for $20 and it fast became my favorite pocket knife.

It's 40 years old but you would never be able to tell it apart from a 4 year old knife unless you read the tang stamp. Just be patient, it might not be there today but the right knife will come along soon enough.

Or if you want to spend even less, used but good condition USA Old Timers go for around $12-15 on ebay if you get one of the more common patterns.

For a pocket knife, consider the Case Sodbuster Jr. or the SAK Farmer, though it isn't carbon steel. They're both beautiful designs. A third choice, and less than half your budget is the Opinel #6. The walnut model is beautiful. I gave my brother a #8 in Walnut. The #6 weighs 1oz. If you have sharpening expertise and use the carbon and stainless Opinels daily, I think you'll see the stainless as the better steel in that blade.

In a fixed blade, you can pay $40 or less for a Marttiini in carbon steel. You'll get a better knife than a Mora, with a better sheath. Marttiinis are the most underrated production knives out there. Nothing is sharper out of the box. With 5 seconds worth of steeling, with a smooth steel, you have a razor blade!

Actually, you can pay under $20 for a rubber-handled Marttiini, comparable in many ways to a similarly-priced Mora Companion. The plastic sheath that comes with these lower-priced Marttiinis is not much different from the plastic Mora sheaths. I have heard it said that the Marttiini blades come sharper, but I have not been able to detect it.

Marttiinis probably have a bit more hipster cachet, on account of their relative rarity.

Received a case yeller cv pen for Christmas and it's a wonderful knife. If I were to lose it I'd buy another!

Henry- You are correct in that the Marttiini Timberjack can be had for under $20 and with the cheap, plastic sheath. It also has a plastic finger guard. However, for $25 or so, you can get the stainless Condor series with better sheaths. For under $40, you can get the beautiful Explorer (small) with the 3.5" stainless blade and curly birch grip and also find some Marttiini knives in carbon, that have a great sheath and no guard or a guard cut into the birch handle.

My experience with Mora and Marttiini has been limited to 5 Moras and 4 Marttiinis. My Marttiinis were noticeably sharper out of the box. They're so sharp to start with, they can be taken to a new level with nothing more than a smooth steel and less than a minute of free handing. They also come sharper than Bucks. However, I only have a couple of Bucks. I can get all of these knives like razor blades, but the Marttiinis come consistently sharper in my small sample size.

Douk Douk or a Black Cat Mercator.
Both carbon, and both take an amazing edge.
These are great all around knives for all chores.
Slim, easy carries as well.

Carbon? Agreed with above Doug Douk/Mercator! Also, Case CV Sodbuster.

Don't mind stainless? Buck 110!

Forty bucks will also get you a Condor Kephart with 1075 steel and a nice leather sheath.

Check out pawn shops they might have some good knives ... flea markets ... things like that that's what I do

 +1  from here. Unless you provide us with some more specific criteria of what you would prefer, the CV TJ is mighty hard to beat for the money.
