$400 decision is killing me~=~

I just saw this mentioned in the forums today; I'll have to check it out. I appreciate it.

The Southern Grind knives really are very impressive. We have another shipment of them coming in tomorrow late day. They are well made and for those that own them, we almost never get a complaint. Worth your time to look in to them. There are a lot of great You Tube videos on them too!

My 761 is a beautiful knife, but it doesn t seem to be that strong and certainly isn t a beater.
My Sebenza 25 ,on the other hand is beautiful and seems to be plenty strong enough for a beater.
I haven t beaten on either yet. These are my impressions.

Damn! I was under the impression most owners of CRKs kept them as garage queens. I stand corrected.

Edit: I checked CRK's site for a picture of the new Umnumzaan. Wow. I am in awe. Gorgeous. Is it significantly different than the Sebbies?

I tried the small 21, large 21, and the 25 before I found a nice used Umnumzaan on the forum and I really like it...it seems much "beefier" that the 21/25 and I use it. That is the main reason that I bought a gently used one, I am not afraid to use it since it already has a mark or two

And yes, it is significantly different (imho) coming from a ZT user.

I also tried a BM 761 that I bought at the right price and was not impressed, I would definitely stick with CRK if you go the large, high end frame lock route.

Hey guys!

New member here, but not new to knives. I currently have a Benchmade Serum (the one that's auto & manual,) an Osborne Rift, BM's brown flipper, a few Spydercos, and the like- totaling around 1 dozen I think.

Since I have to send my Serum in (for the 2nd time!) as the automatic action is broken, I've decided to try something different.

My only problem is... I can't freaking pick what I want. I only have a few requirements (and I'm very flexible):

It's for EDC, ambidextrous is preferable (Southpaw), under 4", but I'm in Texas so that's not really an issue on the legal side, just comfort. Last requirement is under $400, $200-300 is better.

I'm really digging the Benchmade 761, as I can get it for under $300. My buddy is trying to get me to try CRK, but they look too nice to use everyday, and I love to beat the shit out of my knives.

Basically I want something I can beat the hell out of, and looks nice, and has great steel, and is good for EDC.

I honestly don't know what else is in my price range, besides perhaps Hinderer?

Any help is welcome. :)
Looking at your budget right off the bat you are in trouble brother but found the right place and company for it.

You're going to discover maybe 30 or 40 knives that fit your criteria so the big question is which one to try first! Enjoy the journey! ZT's, crk, Spydercos, flippers, tab locks, super steels, midterm the choices are almost endless.

You might need to flip a coin, or buy whatever you like most.

You see! That is what I wanted to hear, I didn't know the 761 wouldn't work as a beater.

Again, more of what I want to hear.

Seems you like benchmade, have you checked out the Benchmade 980bk-1501 ? Has a CPM-M4 blade like the Contego with full carbon handles.

That's pretty, man. Reminds me of my Osborne Rift, of which I am carrying because I have to send in my god**** 5400 Serum again because the automatic mechanism is broken.

Right, I survived by myself when I first started and my budget was under $225, but now that I've expanded.

For the money, ^^^ he is right.

And i love benchmades :) but that zt- fracking amazing

Or a spyderco pm 2 - they are absolutely worth the 120-150 youll pay
What's great about the ZT? Anything special? :)

If you like the Hole, Spyderco.
Rhymes, lol. Love my Spydercos.

An Endura 4 ffg is hard to beat. And not much money to boot.
Yeah, great knife.

Yep. Hahaha.

fwiw... An Emerson knife is with me most every day.
Ernest has a perfect knife formula. Have you tried one?

I love the Sebbie 25 and the umnumzaan, but I love to flick my knives likes crazy.
And?

If I was going to get a Benchmade to beat the hell out of it'd probably be a Contego (perhaps the M390 exclusive?) or maybe the Vicar. Never held a Vicar, but it seems to be pretty B.A. I also like the Adamas, but hard for me to recommend since it's a load to carry, but it can handle some abuse too.

If I spend $400 it has to be ambidextrous or a true lefty. CRK scores here. Also check Southpaw Knives.

FWIW Les George VECP, Dervish Navajo full size or the EDC.
All three can be had for $400 if you are patient and dig deep enough.
I believe the VECP is even offered in a lefty but the Nav and EDC are pretty much right pocket.
I am not a knife beater but have a VECP and EDC and would bet they could handle pretty much anything.
Good luck and have fun with your search.
Cheers and Happy Holidays

The Umnumzaan can be nice to flick but not the Sebenza. The action is fun, I learned to like it a lot more than flicking, but it is what it is.

You might like a flipper with pivot bearings design. I've heard good things about the Southard Avo and Tolk.

I still think you should get a Sebenza 21...
