$400? Was going to get Umnumzaan, now not sure

$400.00 will get you a lot of opinions, as you can see already.

There's daily offerings on the exchange with prices to fit your budget. Get the knife that that appeals to you the most.
There's lots to choose from in your price range.

I've had two Hinderer XM-18's.
I sold them rather quickly...nearly zero detent (dangerous in my pocket).
A Zaan and large Sebbie rode in my pocket for four yrs total. Both are on R&R in my safe, but great knives.
It's very difficult, after owning several hundred folders, to come up with a better choice, DEPENDING on your needs.

Apparently the early versions were that way; designed to be opened easily by inertia.
That has been changed. :)

This is a good thing for people like me who live in Canada, where carrying a knife easily opened by inertia is asking for legal problems.
With the current production, your zero detent worries are a thing of the past.

For those who do not like the Teflon washers, I get it.
I might replace them with phosphor bronze at some point, when I buy more knife parts.
Or maybe not...they are working fine so far.

Bailey Knives, J.Hoover, and Milan Mozolic are makers that might be right up your alley. Milan as a sweet one up right now at a steal. If the handle was a touch slimmer it would be all mine.

At that price point, I think you'll be satisfied with whatever you purchase. I have also been on the fence with an zaan and an xm18.

I've had more Zaan's than any other specific knife model. Love them, by far my favorite CRK, especially in the old pivot/no OTS configuration.

My votes for a Xm-18 3.5 no choil in m390 👍
The finger choil is nice but without gives you more of a working edge with a smaller blade . Really liking mine !

My ZT 0560BW is about to go up on The Exchange so I can fund an Umnumzaan.

Different strokes, different folks.

The only thing I can think of in the $400 range is an LE ZT, if you can get one.

I had the Umnum and it was an excellent knife and I love the little hidden glass breaker feature when the blade was closed, however I ended up selling it a few months later and now many folders later, I have my favorite pocket knife of all time a large Carbon fiber sebenza 21! The largest difference to me other than the way it feels in your hand which don't get me wrong the Umnum felt fantastic as well but the large 21 JUST WORKS and feels perfect in my big hands! I've always felt one of the features that makes it good knife into an excellent knife is when you have it in your hand either in Reverse or forward grip, it feels like an extension of yourself! And What I mean by "just works" is that it can come apart and be cleaned and put back together without any oil or Loctite and just keep on running perfectly centered every time.. I've had Dalibors ( just too afraid to put through hard use considering the cost) emersons, ZT, southern grinds, Spydercos, cold steel, and none of them just felt right and work all the time every time quite like this large 21! The only other folder to me that comes close to comparison and works just about the same way is the Hinderer xm-24 which is also a just works type of knife but just way too heavy and beefy for what I need a folding knife to do as I carry a fixed blade (Winkler Crusher belt knife, or RMJ Raider dagger) in waistband, and just did not need a beefy folder as well. I would give both of those knives a very serious look!

Get the zaan its one of my favorite knives in my collection. You just have to have one to understand. I would get the zaan and you will as we all do end up buying other knives as well. But having the zaan is a must.

Another option near the $400 price point ($432 actually) is the Spyderco Nirvana. Great machining on the one-piece Ti handle.

Also , for @ $280 new is the Fluted Ti Military. Awesome knife.

I can't argue with this. That's a sweet one Milan's got up. Always some nice stuff in that Maker's Exchange.
