40th Anniversary Native - Any love?

Maybe I am getting too old, but as pictured, isn't the Deacon's tip down rh carry? When folded, the spine should be against the back of the pocket preventing an accidental in-pocket opening.

That's one of the flaws of conventional tip down carry. Look at the Military. Tip down only and the spine of the blade faces forward. Granted, the Military is one of the few tip down knives I like.

Were it not for the huge 40 on the blade, I might have been powerless to resist! A fluted c/f Native in Damasteel sounds like production knife perfection to Mr....That beautiful Damasteel really loses so much with that big print on it.

Do you guys think the 40 could be removed and the nice finish be brought back to the steel? (and yes, I realize that would probably be a warranty buster...)

I'm sure it could be done via regrind and then re-etching. I know Razor Edge Knives has reground some FFG Spydercos to thin the blade. I'm sure he could grind off enough material to get rid of the lazer engraving. Not sure if he could do the etching. Although, Damasteel has a very detailed YouTube video featuring Todd Begg on how to etch their DS93X steel (worth watching either way).

Also, I can't believe The Deacon changed the clip like that. Tip down, left hand carry. Blasphemy! :p

I would swap for a Spyderco clip without the hole because that doesn't look great. Beautiful knife though.

Agreed. :)
Don't know if you're getting too old or not, but it's definitely the way most folks, myself included, would set a knife up for tip down left hand carry. With tip down there's a lot less danger of kinetic opening in your pocket than there is with tip up carry and when the knife is a midlock with a strong bias toward staying closed there's none at all. Being able to have the knife blade forward means it's oriented for easy retrieval with the backstrap against your palm and the Spyderhole under your thumb. You can also use the "Spydie drop" method to retrieve and deploy in one motion by placing thumb and forefinger on the Spyderhole. Of course, if you're a "belt and suspenders" kind of guy, mounting the clip like that and carrying it in the right pocket gives you that extra layer of protection.

As for the clip, if I decide I want to carry this knife, or get another to carry, I'll just do what I do with every other non-auto I carry, take the clip off and slip it into my back pocket. Otherwise, I'll either rummage through my box of clips for one without the hole, or put the clip back where Spyderco had it. Frankly, if I wanted to carry it clipped, I'd want a black clip. IMHO, the silver one takes focus off the blade.

That makes sense. Thanks for the explanation. I just learned something new.

That off-center pivot screw peeking through the hole in the clip just seem totally out of place on a quality piece like this.

They should get rid of the tip-down screw holes entirely. They really interfere with the look of the scale, in my opinion. The fluting seems to draw the eye straight towards them. I can stand the left-side carry tip-up holes, but cannot abide the tip-down ones.

Had a conversation with the wife about this knife today: and it's another one of the million reasons why I love her after 11 years of marriage and counting-

Me: "The 40th anniversary Native has dropped in the US....."
Mrs: "Buy one"
Me: "But it's really pricey- look!"
Mrs: *looks* "Not when you consider there's only going to be a few hundred of them in the whole world ever- Buy one!"
Me: "But it's a lot of....."
Mrs L: *cutting me off and raising her voice* "BUY ONE!"

Aaaaaand 'Add to cart" was clicked :D

While I'd say that, at least on midlock knives, Spyderco should either do what they've been doing lately and drill holes on all four corners to accommodate both left and right handed users and those in each group that prefer tip up or tip down carry, or leave the damn clip off altogether. I honestly think that, on a high end piece like the 40th Ann Native, no clip would be the best option as it detracts from the look of the scales no matter where it's mounted.

I usually don't go for clipless pocket knives but I wholeheartedly agree with you here.

LOL, that almost sounds like fantasy more than reality :D. Guess you got a good one.

+1
The knife will certainly look better.

Its a 1200 piece run so its going to be more than a few hundred.

Also as of now 10 of these are showing in stock @ BHQ: http://www.bladehq.com/item--Spyderco-Native-5-40th-Anniversary--33041

I'm sorry my wife (not a knife person) was not 100% technically correct. ....You might be brave enough to correct her, but I'm not.

I'd also add that Sal himself has stated on the Spyderco forum that 1200 was the initial goal but it's going to be a good amount less than that due to it being a challenging knife to build....but yes, it's going to be more than a 'few hundred' unless you consider 1000ish to be 'a few hundred'

That said, I think with the asking price, these are likely to stay in stock for a while.

The points not what your wife knows but that I thought it was worth mentioning that this isn't a super limited 300 or 400 piece sprint run but instead a large 1200 piece run...Minus fallouts of course.

Unless I missed it I didn't see that mentioned in this thread.

You wanted love?- Howabout some love :)

On my calendar and the little spyderhole of the Thor damasteel that was included in the Amsterdam Meet gift bag....reunited (probably) at last!

Close up of the steel....sexy as Black Widow in her freshly polished leather jumpsuit :D

More porn. That carbon fibre is something else- like the aerospace stuff I handle at work...
IMG_1755_zpsa7ayeyus.jpg

The pattern even continues on the 'bearing' face....and look at that linerless carbon fibre- the fluting is light and the whole knife is super solid despite being like a wafer.
IMG_1756_zpsmxt34hdi.jpg

Look at that spine...Mmm. Tigerstripe- compare it with the hole perched on the top.

I ordered one last night. I came in here hoping to find any comments on the Thor damasteel. I guess I'll have to find out for myself

I have one on the way too! This will be kind of a grail for me so I'm looking forward to this one!

Got mine and it's very nice. Damascus looks great and that linerless true carbon fiber is outstanding. Weighs just 2.77 ounces.
