Moose asked us awhile back to post up head to heads, and since my edc review was so well recieved, i decided to do another. This time its 5 knives, in a battle royale for the position as my top woods knife. Much like all of you, i love taking a few blades with me in the woods and doing different chores with different steel, ya know to be fair to all the kiddies. But, i also consider one knife scenarios, and whether or not i would feel comfortable with one particular blade doing it all. not necessarily a bug out bag knife, but more like im going out for a day, and wanna pack super light, which goes with. Check the post number #2 for technical stuff and first look, this ones got the fun stuff

So ive done reviews before, and I was looking for a way to spice this one up a little bit. Well let me introduce you to my buddy ben. Hes a knife noob. His idea of cool knives are OTF's and bailsongs. But he started checking out my beckers and they sparked his curiosity. So I thought why not have him do the review? Give me a chance to learn him something, and get a good honest unbiased review. He didnt know specs, brands, prices, or even my own opinion about the 5 knives. The pics below are of our trip and some work. After the pics is bens choice. Boom, off to the woods. Oh and ps, I BLED for this review. nothing like the teacher getting bit by a blade while showing the student about knife safety...

ok so i taught him feathersticks, chopping, batoning, whittling, firesteel scraping, how to use a firestraw, and basic fire building when you dont have newspaper and lighter fuel.

Thats right, the Becker BK2 was chosen by a knife noob as the best in show. He said he liked how it felt in hand, how nimble it was for such a larger knife, how it chopped without much effort.

BUT HIS FAVORITE PART ABOUT THE BK2......THAT ITS A SHARPENED PRYBAR!

Ok so i asked him about the others and this is how he rated them all. The Fox Parang got an honorable mention, he said he like the control and comfortable handle and it chopped like a beast. he didnt like that it cant be a "one knife" knife without a more defined point.
His second favorite was the bk7 because he loved the control with feathersticks but said it felt to light for chopping. he also liked the look and how it felt faster than the rest
The rd-6 came next because it did all the work, but felt like crap while doing it since the ergos are terrible. It excelled in the tasks but felt too bulky for him
The crewman came last for him, he said it just felt like a weaker spawn of the bk2 and bk7, wasnt long enough to excel at chopping or batoning and wasnt thick enough to feel like it could go through hell and back. But just like on the 7 he likes thumb ramps (o those noobs :D)

He now is going to get a bk2 first, then a bk7 (esp after i told him the prices, his jaw almost hit the floor when i told him the fox's price) So there ya go Moose. A completely unbiased review and head to head.

Specs and initial "unboxing" review of possible pros and cons

First up the bk7. This is the first time i got to really know a bk7. Ive always told myself that i wanted one but couldnt pull the trigger. My initial thoughts for this guy was "omg this this is BEAT UP!" but then again i got it for that reason since the frankenbecker guys are gonna have at it. When i finally got to use it some there were things i loved and things that i didnt love so much. First up the pros, i like the blade length. This is what "I" call a becker tweener. fills in the gaps between the bk2 and the bk9 :D It feels lightining fast in hand, and i mean quick. I understand why its called a "combat utility". This screams fighter, and raises it voice for the bush. As always i like 1095 steel, and i like the becker handle and pommel to hammer on. I actually like the thumb ramp on this one too. Now for the Cons. I think this thing would be better if it was 1/4 thick. now now now before you scream at me, its just my personal opinion. I love 1/4 knives for utility and for one of this length i think it gets too thin too far from the point. It almost looks like the point may be a bit weak compared to the others in the battle. Also im not a fan of the swedge either, i think that it shouldnt be there, period. since i already think the point is too thin, removing steel seems like it would only weaken it. again only my personal opinion. Also as usual the sheath could be upgraded, nothing special about it and a plastic insert and retention strap dont really do it for me in the "safe and secure" department. A choil would be a welcome addition. knife feels a bit long when trying to choke up. Right size for a chopper but feels to light to do the damage that some others can cause

Next up, the Fox Parang. Got this in a trade, and at first i thought it may be a compact chopper option so i was kinda psyched to get it. When it got here boy i was even more excited. Its made in italy and out of N690Co stainless steel. 6 inch blade and 1/4 thick. The Pros, this is probably the best feeling knife i have ever held. It is so well balanced and gives so many different grip options with super nice choil and jimping. The stock sheath is also very well made and is a great addition to this blade. I think this is going to be one hell of a compact chopping machine. and i love 1/4 steel and its not heavy and very fast in hand Cons the g10 could do without the grooves, my fingers dont match up with them. NO POINT! fox's website pushes about this being an end all be all jungle survival knife, but i cant see that without a point to work with. Correction there is a very WIDE point. Also i worry about stick tangs. I guess they wanted to save some weight because it looks as if its only a stick tang with an exposed pommel for a lanyard loop. Could be wrong but thats the only solution i can come up with for this guy WEIGHING LESS THAN THE BK2. What is exposed also doesnt look strong enough to really hammer on.

Next is the Ontario Ranger RD-6. Tough built like a tank with 1/4 5160. 6 inches long modified bowie. the Pros. First its 1/4 thick :D I just think that for a hard use, bet your ass on it blade, 1/4 is the way to go. I also like the weight. Its not bad for being built so big. I absolutly love the pommel. Good wide sturdy place to hammer on if need be, or crack some skulls open, depends on which saturday night your talking about. also the choil is nice The cons, The sheath. I didnt get the factory sheath with this since they guy i got it from had one from chestnut ridge and from what ive seen on the factory sheath, he probably just burned it once the crks model got there. But, since im trying to be as fair as possible it needs to be mentioned. Same kind of setup as a bk7, except the retention strap is way high, so the knife moves up and down inside the retention strap. dumb engineering if i do say so myself. The "thumb ramp" is nearly non existant and the jimping is too far back to be of any use. Also the handles feel like a brick. The micarta is square and uncomfortable, combine that with a vastly over-exaggerated belly on the handle and you got a good recipe for sitting in a drawer.

Next is a Camillus Crewman BK10. 1095, .188 thick, 5.5 long. Pros, the blade shape and design, its my favorite profile. Its just looks awesome. I love the higher grind on the camillus version to. I actually very much regretted modding my bk10 after doing so, since i love the profile so much. It has a great balance a weight, feels fast in hand. the thumb ramp is nice too. extended pommel cons .188 thickness. the sheath also nothing to write home about, thats why azwelke is the way to go. The gaurd block the ability to really choke up on it.

Lastly is a first gen bk2. We all know and love it. "a sheath full of crovan viagra" 1095 5 inches long and 1/4 thick. The pros, awesome utility blade. good length for decent control. well balanced. decent factory sheath. feels like you can take on the world with one of these in your hands. the weight is good. The cons, no pommel. I know the newer gen has it, and i miss it on this one. can feel a bit too big for smaller chores. sometimes can be too much knife and too little knife at the same time.

Well, I had originally planned on going with scorn and derision, but you did a fine job, so I will settle instead for some light compliments. Good job.

Also an admission of my own lazyness as I haven't done a comparison yet.

Reserved, because I'm not normally so. Excellent way to get the smart kid(he did pick a Becker after all) to do your homework for you Clich! lol, good idea really man! My interest is piqued by this Fox paring. I may have to give one a try. How long did y'all play, er... test for?

hey, photo of the parang without the handle? just curious how stout that is :)

The designer of the Parang is a member of BF There was a review of the knife (in the review section, haha) that he posted in. He would probably answer any technical questions about the knife.

Great job so far!
Can't wait for the rest.
That Fox River looks good, but a little weak by the choil.

Nice review, bro. Like the photos and looks like a cool spot to spend the day. May end up having to try out that 2 eventually, thanks.
