5 knives you regret purchasing

all of my cold steel knives and a crkt.

ti lite- lock failed everytime. with the sligtest pressure strongest liner lock in the buisness my A**.

recon 1 folder- lock was way too sticky and couldnt open and close one handed. G10 ripped holes in my pocket.

triple action- the handle hits the blade and causes chips. they shouldve put a replaceable zytel spacer in the handle for when flipping.

the nightshade series knives made of plastic. they broke super quick. I cut one cardboard box and the blade snapped on the taipan model.

mini pendelton hunter neck knife- blade gets wicked sharp but the steel dulls after about 5 cuts into cardboard.

Crkt sampa- developed blade play a day after i got it and i didnt even use it.i just opened and closed about 50 times.

and theres a couple of chinese knives i bought when i was a kid but those are understandably crap.

All of my autos. People love to play with my Microtechs and BM autos at my house, however, not being able to use them in the real world kind of ruins them for me (oh, and they're semi-expensive)

Also, my double edged Bali-Song. Just when I thought I was the master flipper, that bad boy put me right in my place.

Emerson A100: Liner lock couldn't be trusted, received a pretty nasty cut when it gave way.

Mcusta Take: Beautiful knife, very small in hand, which makes it very difficult to open with thumbstud.
Also the liner lock, is quite hard on the thumb to release.

Some of you guys are WAY more picky than me!

Mainly the knives I regret are those excellent knives I have lost, or sold for financial reasons.

If you want knives that I'm not wild about, then a few weeks ago I may have said it was the Gerber F.A.S.T, because there were obvious burs on the edge and in the serration scallops. That was very disheartening. But the edge burs were quickly set right with a few licks of the 'Sharp Maker'. Now that I have actually had a chance to carry and use the darn thing, I think a lot better of it. It's not what I would call a value at $45, but it is certainly worth that price.

Another knife that I had a slight regret over is my Emerson 'Hard Ware' knife. I ordered a fully serrated version, thinking they used G10 scales and were a great deal, and was disappointing to see it used glass filled nylon instead. That said, I still have the knife years later, and It has served me very well. Another knife that turned out to be worth the price, but did not live up to my initial expectations of value for the dollar.

In the end though, I'm glad I have them both. They are good EDC knives that will last me a long time, but without the risk of loosing any considerable amount of money if they break or are lost.

But there ARE two "knives" that I can honestly say were a complete WASTE of my money, and I regret ever buying them. - A Cold Steel FGX Taipan and a Delta Dart. TOTAL CRAP - despite what their literature says, they can NOT be 'sharpened' with an emery board or anything else for that mater. Even at $10 they are a waste of time and cash.

SOG Trident, looked cool, had blade play out of the box. Handle felt super cheap.
SOG Tomcat 3, looked cool but developed up and down blade play after a week.
Benchmade 710, loved it and still do. Would buy one again. It's on this list and I sold it because I cut myself with it. The tip was too pointy and when my index finger swung at it accidentally it was a painful and bloody incident lol

The thing Regret most about Knife buying and Knife Choices is:

Not finding out about the Blade Forums sooner. :)

Thanks Spark, Today, I carry better EDC's because of your Forums.

Thank You,

I can say I've learned quite a lot here as well, and made lots of connections thanks to these forums. So my one regret is the same--not finding the forums sooner! :D:thumbup:

OK, I have a couple....
Sog Tigershark.... the Taiwan version.... didn't like the zytel handle cuz it didn't feel like there was much control over the large blade also not a big fan of serrations on my fixed blades.

Benchmade 275.... this was actually a really nice knife the fit and finish was perfect and I love the design ....just didn't like the feeling of having a 2x4 in my pocket

Cold Steel Boar Hunter... I think it's fugly as hell and the blade has an extreme hollow grind making it feel like it could break easily.what Maybe it would be good for boar hunting, but don't know. But this was a present from my dad so I will always keep it.

ANYTHING MADE IN CHINA!!!

The only purchase I really regret was a Kershaw Groove. The damn thing kept opening in my pocket.

Sog Flash I. Great little knife but way to small for my hands. I probably won't buy another knife unless I can hold it in my hands first.

Spyderco Kopa Giraffe Bone - Lovely little knife with excellent FF but the scales are so poorly matched that one side looks like bone and the other looks like some kind of weird yellowish crystal. In fairness I had heard about the variations in scales b4 i bought it and decided to roll the dice anyways.

Benchmade MPR - Love the feel of the knife in my hand but the blade is too thick for me, the pocket clip stinks and I cant get over the .030" lock cut out on such a ridiculously thick folder.

Benchmade Subrosa - Creates hot spots on my hand.

Zero Tolerance 0551 - It was expensive and once again the lock cut out thing bugged me. I realize they have to cater to everyone, a thinner lock cut out allows the knife to be flicked more easily and places less wear on the detent. I personally just couldnt get around having a 3/16" (.1875 inches) ti slab with a .030" cutout for the lock. Im sure I couldnt break it if I tried but nonetheless it annoyed me.

Sog Seal Pup Elite - Now that I own an Esee-4 my days of tacticool are done. In all fairness it was a tough knife although the zytel handles did suck.

You might see a lot of Spydercos on here, but thats because 95% of my knives are Spyderco.

Spyderco Delica with combo edge - This was the first true EDC knife I bought. I paid way to much for it, and found out how useless (for me) serrations are on a utility knife. The best thing that came out of this is that I did indeed truely regret buying this and started to explore other options out there. This is where my Spyderco bite and knife itch started.

Kershaw Blur - Assist spring made a crack and gritting sound within a week. Broken.

Spyderco Tenacious - Although this is a paid for what you get knife, I think the knife is fundamentally outstanding, but I wish they would make a higher quality version of this... I simply can't stand the cheap feeling G10. I never use this knife.

Spyderco Endura 4 with Emersion Wave - This is another good knife, however I simply don't like the look of it. I think it looks to much like a "stabbing knife". I never use this knife.

1) CRKT Ken Onion 'Ripple' with the 'Acuto' or whatever steel. God I hate that knife! More hot-spots that a waffle iron and an uncomfortable clip.
2) Kershaw 'Rat'. Great quality, but I never use it. Just something about the 'Scimitar' shaped blade.
3) Buck 347 Vantage 'Pro'. Came off-center and too tight to flip. Back off pivot screw, centering goes to hell. Tighten pivot screw to center and you need pliers to draw the blade.
4) Benchmade 710 with M390. I never use it because the blade shape bugs me. A fine knife...just not for me.
5) Benchmade 710 with M390 (black). See above.

I own a cold steel ak-47 and love it a crkt large natural and love it so I'm not getting the CS and crkt hate but maybe I lucked out I do understand the quality difference since I recently bought a benchmade 275 but I still love those knives I enjoy large folders very much

the one knife I truly regret buying is a tops Tom brown tracker I fell for the movie and even researched the crap out of the knife BUT then I tried to use it and my perception of the knife widened and I realized you got to pay for the very expensive classes to learn how to use it to it's full potential

I gave it to my dad and replaced it with a Becker bk2 no regrets at all and sorry busse has some great designs but also busse fanboys have to admit that some of there designs belong in the tactilol thread where Becker knives are grounded in reality and not call of duty nutnfancy zombie land

The only knives that I regret are ones with combo edges that I bought early in my knife buying obsession. I don't mind serrated knives but the ones with combination edges seem to stick at the transition.

1. Rapala big game hunter: over priced and useless for my needs, my first fixed blade...

2. Gerber LMF II: Loved it at first, then learned about knives. Too tacticool and serrations suck, at least I have the sandvik version.

3. Ontario Rat 5: Dont hate it but its a little short, thick and heavy. Learned that I dont like choils on a fixed blade.

Mine have to be the:
1. Sog Aegis Tanto. My first quality knife, the zytel handle broke after about a week. Also, I hate tanto points (I bought it for looks, not function. It was my 18th birthday and I was stupid)
2. Sogzilla. Horrible quality, knife steel rolls constantly, the freaking lock bar spring fell out.
3. Benchmade 940. I realized I do not like aluminum handles, the blade and handle were far too thin to be comfortable, and it didn't feel very strong in hand.
4. Spyderco native. I hate a pinned construction, and mine developed ridiculous blade play. The vertical play got so bad that the the lock bar buried underneath the handle material.
5. Gerber applegate fairbairn combat folder. Heavy as s*#t, daggers I learned are illegal in my area, horrible clip bends easily, skin ripping liner lock, and the thickness is ridiculous. Carried it two days and sold it immediately.
