5 Traditional Knife "Must Haves"

Sodbuster
Schrade 34OT
SAK Alox Soldier
Opinel #7 or 8 Carbon
Buck 110

But wait! There's more! ...oh, yeah, just five:o

Last edited:
1) Sodbuster
2) Stockman or whittler
3) SAK of choice (for me, it's the alox soldier)
4) a knife with at least 2 blades on a single backspring such as the case/bose norfolk
5) probably a Buck 110 due to it's classic status but I bet some here would go for the peanut over the Buck.

Humm...

canoe
moose
sodbuster
trapper
barlow

All should be of adequate size and of the manufacture that most appeals to you. That way you get your choice of scales and blades and frame sizes. For instance, I've got large hands so I like Case's large sodbuster (mine is American Worker blue), a 3 5/8ths trapper with a pen blade (right now I've got a Case but you should really have at least one Schrade [USA] in the mix), etc.

My choices would be:

Stockman or Cattle Knife

Something small and nice for dress - Pearl or Ebony scaled maybe

Cheap but quality hard use knife you won't mind breaking or losing such as a Rough Rider - Their 4" Congress is my personal favorite

Randall for a fixed blade - Pricer than many customs but...

Something for the kitchen - Vintage Sabatier, Butcher or even a Parer - You get a lot of satisfaction using an old quality knife preparing food

My five would be:

Remington 1123 style trapper
Barlow
Stockman
Peanut
Marble's Woodcraft

1. Sodbuster, be it a classic Case, German Eye Brand, or nice new GEC
2. Stockman, any kind you wish, preferably U.S. Oldtimer
3. Buck 110
4. Bowie knife (NOT some mall ninja 34" long, 5 lb. tree felling POS)
5. Peanut, as keeping it off the list would draw fire from the old timers :D

Wow, a number of people posting non traditional knives. Read the friendly directions people  :p,
Connor

1) buck stockman (301 or 303)
2) victorinox classic
3) wenger SI
4) CASE TEXAS JACK!
5) a BARLOW!

Okay, sure. Trapper, Stockman, SAK, 110, Barlow. But how about this? Five knives, make them all variations of the same, like five GEC Sunfish. Sure, not practical, but I like the idea of digging deep in one style and company than picking the most common of many companies.

1) GEC (pattern 66) or CASE CV Amber Bone Medium Stockman (or any other vintage American made)
2) Buck 110
3) 4" - 5" Toothpick (Schatt & Morgan, or any vintage American made)
4) Opinel (any variation)
5) Barlow pattern (any modern or vintage American made)

Vic. Tinker
Case Large Stockman
Case or Schrade medium Stockman
Case Trapper
Schrade 194OT single blade Trapper

1)A locking single blade folder such as a Buck 110. There are many others out there as well. I have a Gerber FS II and FS III

2) A fillet knife. I have a Normark, but currently no picture.

Reserved for photo

3) A general purpose fixed blade, maybe something like these:

4) A medium size multi blade folder, some thing like these:

GEC.jpg

5) A small pocket knife for everyday tasks, such as my favorite the mini copperhead:

or a peanut:

Maybe I can get a photo up of the fillet knife later today.

In no particular order...

Cattle Knife
Stockman
Dogleg Jack
Eureka Jack
Wharncliffe Trapper

1. Scout/Camper, SAK
2. Stockman
3. Peanut & other Jacks
4. French traditional, Opinel, Laguiole, Douk-Douk
5. Equal end, Moose.....

Buck 110 (custom shop if you can go there)
vintage Marbles FB
vintage Case pre-1970's
vintage Schrade stockman 895-899
Barlow-- any old classic or for a more recent one--- Dan Burke would be nice

I'm assuming GEC is already a favorite so its excluded

On reflection but in no order of preference:

Single blade type, Opinel, Sodbuster or many European Traditionals etc.

Puukko

Teardrop Jack

Single-spring two blades or Balow

Three blade pattern pref Medium Stockman or Whittler

I'd center my list more around types than brands... and I'm going to focus on pocket knives instead of including fixed blades.

1. Hefty lockback, like the Buck 110 or Schrade LB7.
2. Stockman; my pick would be a 4" cattle knife from Queen/Schatt, Case, GEC, Schrade/Old Timer, or Buck.
3. Trapper pattern. Again, from one of the "Big 5" American manufacturers.
4. Toothpick
5. Barlow

I think more about frames than blade types.

1. Medium stockman serpentine frame - easy to carry in the office
2. Large 4" trapper - plenty of eamples around from Case, Schrade & GEC
3. Folding Hunter - Buck 110 or one of the Case, Schrade varients
4. Fixed blade - for me it's an old Puma hunting knife.
5. Cattle knife - large stockman on a cigar frame. The punch is optional

3) A general purpose fixed blade, maybe something like these:

LOVE the Schrade Little Finger. (Top knife in this photo.) I have at least one of them, maybe two. A very useful knife. Feels very good in hand. :)

I think I already posted in this thread earlier, but I'm going to give it another go anyway.

Stockman - I would pick a US made Schrade

Jack knife or some sort, be it a peanut or a Texas jack

Scout pattern including SAKs

Buck 110 or similar lockbacks

Little Finn or similar fixed blade.
