Hi guys,

I have around 500 bucks to spend on a folder, prefer tactical. So what are your recommendations ? Thanks to all.

Martin

i am pretty sure everyone here will recommend a chris reeve sebenza.

i have never owned one though. they are beautiful knives.

Strider SMF, I'd go recurve myself
Hinderer XM or FireTac
Brian Tighe My Tighe
To start with.....

Strider,Hinderer......,or wait a couple of weeks to find out what new knives Chris Reeve is adding to his, already impressive,line-up....,could very well be a tactical folder!

I would recommend a Spyderco BG-42 Carbon Fiber Military AND a Benchmade 710 AND a Buck Custom Shoppe 110....and you still might have enough to take your woman out to dinner!

I cannot recomment spending $500.00 dollars on any single folder.
Besides, you will not find a single folder that performs better than any of those three.

Good luck,
Allen.

I believe that I had read that there were problems with Brad Duncan.

I would recommend Rick Hinderer, Patrick Nihiser, Allen Elishewitz (Steel Addiction has a few of his knives in your price range), RJ Martin, Kirby Lambert.

I may be wrong but haven't there been problems with Brad?

Brad WAS having a rough go of it from what I understand, but that's done with. AFAIK he's back on top of his game.

As to the Sebenza, its a good knife- not $500 good though.

As to the question, if you're looking to spend $500 on one knife, I'd go with something by RJ Martin, as shaldag said.

If you're looking for more than one knife, I'd have to suggest a Hinderer XM-18 and probably a BG-42 Military or an Emerson (CQC7 or CQC10). Others may not see paying $500 for one folder, but then again, there are some that are just worth it, and if you're determined to spend your wad on something nice... I'd just go with a Devastator, although some of the South African makers you can see on sites like Arizona Custom Knives (I believe that's the addy) represent really good bargains as well.

ETA: Please let us know what you decide on! I, for one, always enjoy hearing how people decide these things.

I can never find Lightfoot folders for sale anymore...now all I see is FBs. Maybe I just have terrible timing?

In any case, I do quite enjoy Lightfoot's work.

Nevermind...found one.

I would definately go for a custom/handmade- you can always get a Sebenza. At that price point there's plenty of great new customs available from makers and dealers as well as nice knives on the secondary market. The vast majority of knives I own are in that ballpark as well. If it were me I'd be looking at Obenaufs (of course!), Lamberts, Hinderer, Lightfoot, JW Smith, RJ Martin and others. Pat Nihiser has some nice looking stuff out as well that's in that range (I don't have anything from him yet so I can't comment too much). You may be able to find a Terzuola framelock for a little more than that amount, I would definately be looking for Terzuolas on the secondary market though. Also on the secondary market look for Darrel Ralphs work, Dozier and Elishewitz as well as used knives from the other makers mentioned. It wouldn't be totally out of the question either to find a Carson/Obenauf C20 on the secondary market for close to $500 although the prices seem to be rising as they are getting harder to find. There's lots and lots of nice knives out there for $500!!!

Take a look at some of these dealer sites which I regulary visit:

www.truenorthknives.com
www.steeladdictionknives.com
www.robertsoncustomcutlery.com
www.bobnealcustomknives.com
www.knifeart.com

Had a chance to handle a Hinderer XM-18 in a recent passaround and all I can say is "WOW what a knife." Get one if you can. :D
