UPDATE: WE HAVE A WINNER!

On the eve of nearing 500 posts in Traditional, I am giving away a Case Small Texas Jack (Amber Bone, CV).

IMG_2078.jpg

A few things I’m grateful to this forum for, in no particular order:

1) Pictures: In addition to the photographs you all so freely offer up all the time, so many of you graciously respond when I ask to see (further) pictures of the knives or features you mention along the way. I really appreciate that! I gain so much from being able to see real-life shots that enhance or belie standard company descriptives and “official” photographs, demonstrate the visual difference between features and knives, etc.

Not only that, but being a member here has motivated me to take more pictures myself, and not just of knives. (Imagine.) I am grateful for the continual inspiration to keep my camera handy and use it.

2) GEC. I’d not heard of this company, let alone seen any of its knives before discovering this forum. My White Owl is rounding out to be my favorite knife.

3) Our international members, and the different perspectives and experiences from which they share their knives and stories.

4) Knowledge, humor, and inspiration, in so many forms, the latter most certainly including the generosity of members here to share not only their insights but actual knives.

I’m currently smitten by Case’s Amber Bone + CV combination (thankyouverymuch steeltoe and 2Stich442 and Hummpa and... :)). I bought this Small Texas Jack in person today to be sure the Amber scales were of good color, the blades well-seated (as best as my n00bie self can tell), etc.

Rules:

Open to all, regardless of level of membership or country of residence.

One entry per person; your post number is your entry number.

If you are a regular contributor here, an “I’m in” is sufficient, although more would be great. If you can readily think of something you enjoy about hanging out here, please share it. Or a picture. Or something funny. Or something.

If you do not often post regularly but read and enjoy the goings-on here in Traditional, please do share something that you’ve learned or enjoy or keeps you coming back.

If you scan Traditional only to catch Giveaways, and your primary contribution over time has consisted of posts stating, “I’m in,” then ______________. (Thumper’s mother’s advice heeded, here.)

Really, I encourage everyone to enter into the spirit of this one. It’s a “Do Unto Others” giveaway because I purposefully chose a knife I do not yet own myself but would love to, one that I learned about by reading this forum and that I feel fits well in my (the?) Case Traditional Sweet Spot. This one is technically now in my possession, but awaits its winner.

I’ll choose the winner in a week or so. This post will bring me to 488 in Traditional, so 500 won't be long, now. Yakkity-Yak. :)

I hope to come up with something involving “Kittens” as the random-winner-generator, heh, but depending on the number of entries may have to rely on the number generator at Random.org instead.

I’ll post again before I close the contest, to confirm the final date.

Update: Giveaway now closing at 3pm EST Saturday, June 16th, 2012.

Thanks, everyone!

~ pertinux

I check here pretty often mainly to educate myself and keep up with the latest. Good people here.
Congrats to you.

Thanks for the opportunity, Count me in!

As to a contribution, I hope these is valid. The camaraderie is one of the major factors that pull me towards the traditional forum. A place of cultural knives and the character that accompanies them.

I'm in... But do you know what, PERTINUX? Just last night I was searching for the same knife on-line and dreaming of having one that I had actually picked out by hand. Being here in Mexico I order sight unseen many times. Right now I have three AG Russell knives and a Condor Hudson Bay and a Hen and Rooster wharnie whittler waiting at the border in Laredo. I can't get there until the last of August due to obligations etc. here. I hope all of them are in pristine shape... Thanks for doing the leg work and for a great GA!

*I shall change my mind and participate, I owe it to Pertinux to do so :D

Growing up, I always had an acute fascination with antiques, history, older and wiser individuals and knives. I would spend hours talking to the elder residents of my street and around town about anything and everything. Unlike the other kids that I knew, I saw knives as humble tools that grew better with age and should be respected. I remember when I first saw a slipjoint for the first time; my grandfather using one of his old electrician's knives that he had acquired years ago. I fell in love with that look of 'character' that resonated from gazing upon its beautifully patina-ed blades. I always felt that the knives that many deemed as old and tasteless contained the most character to me; I always wished I knew their story. Not only that, but these interests were my escape from the bad things that revolved around me; divorce, abuse, a drunken father and him being sent to prison, moving all of the time...it was a world that I could immerse myself in completely.

As I grew, I began to collect pocket knives, nothing spectacular, but just enough to keep me happy. I started with a Schrade multitool that came in a red velvet box with a pair of binoculars, another Schrade that I cannot remember it's name...it went on. I went through a tactical phase that quickly evaporated, outdoors knives that were 'indestructible' (before I came to appreciate thin blades)...I never followed through on my slipjoint coveting I had done as a child, I used them every once in a while, but I never owned one. Knives kept me outside, active, happy and out of trouble.

Well, I found this forum by accident while looking for information on a knife via Google. As I combed through the site, I stumbled upon this sub-forum. Almost instantly, a nostalgic feeling came over me as I saw your guys' pictures of those knives that I loved as a child. I kinda had to sit back a moment and take a stroll through memory lane. I must say that I was stricken very unexpectedly by what I felt. I was then inspired to take part in that childhood fascination of slipjoints and to take part in making some history myself and one day look back and reminisce how my trusted companion has aged alongside me through the years. I must say that I may be acting very radical in my sentiment and reasoning for being as young as I am speaking about my childhood like it was decades ago, but I have had a lot of time to sit and breed introspective reflection in my thoughts...:o

I love hanging around here because I have found a place where people from all around the world share a mutual interest and are willing to help each other out for the sake of being kind. I love this place because it brings me back to those times when life was really simple (even if I perceived it to be the latter at the time), I love reading about these new models, sharing collections, exchanging advice and opinions and sharing these heartfelt tales...This is a wonderful place and I am very glad to share it with you all.

****Here is a pic of my first Slippy, I might as well add some sort of pic to make my post somewhat bearable :p

Thank you for reading (my sincere apologies if it was a tad too extreme), and thank you for you generosity in this act of kindness.
I wish everyone good luck and I hope that you all have a wonderful day!

Kind regards,

Not an entry (for what should be a fairly obvious reason) but a thanks for your generosity and congrats on the impending milepost. And since I'm here, a small nit to pick.I believe that is a medium Texas Jack. The small TJ is the one with black scales, between the peanuts and the 62032s. At least, that's what my boxes said. ;)

I'm in
Thank you for the wonderful giveaway. I love seeing your posts here, as well as those cats. :D

Not an entry please, thanks :D Very nice gesture though
Congrats on your 500 post, good to have you here,
I'm always coming back to this forum, and is the first i check when i log onto bladeforums, if not the only one, most of the time.
I've met many great and kind people here, read wonderful stories, and learned a lot. Still do.
Traditional pocket knives are the only kind i carry now, and it gives me such pleasure to watch a patina growing on a blade, feel the material on the handles, and use them every chance i get.
Being a knife nut, having and using knives that seem to have a soul feels the right path for me.

Used to skip the traditional section altogether for years. Somehow believed a knife without a clip and a one handed opening mechanism was not for me.
I am still not quite sure what happened but about 2 months ago I found myself looking at trapper, stockman, congress and many other models, mainly bone and stag handles with different kinds of jigging and colors looking up all kinds of brands and makers I never knew existed and oftend closed years before I was even born.
Only bought my first GEC, a furtaker trapper, a month ago and still awaiting my first real stockman at the moment, not counting the China Buck that I bought to hold me over. Over the last month or so I must have read every new thread in this section and quite a few older ones have seen countless pictures.
As I have contributed nothing to this section it wouldn't feel right to participate in this giveaway to win but if this entry comes up I could maybe convince you to enjoy the knife yourself.

A noble giveaway, I am in! I am a huge fan of the traditional forum because I have always been interested in "traditional" things. I'm still quite young (mid 20's) but I always find myself attracted to old world things so the traditional forum has been a haven of interesting knowledge. I am also VERY drawn to quality craftsmanship and the traditional forum has no shortage of examples of fine craftsmanship, many times coming from the craftsman themselves. I don't have many posts mainly because I've been a lurker until fairly recently, but the large majority of my posts are in the Traditional forum.

You could also say I was born into it because I was born in a town that was founded on the construction of an ironworks in the mid 1700's and to this day they are still famous for their metal work.

Congrats on 500!

Thanks for the opportunity. I started coming here after I bought my first Case peanut. Between getting that peanut, liking it and poking around the traditional forum I've snagged a Medium Jack, Stockman and a few more peanuts.
Also, partly because of you, I finally decided to replace my lost camera. Heh.

I am new to the forums, however, since the first day i joined I have looked at the traditionals, and I marvel in the beauty of the knives, and makes me respect the quality of my old Old Timer stockman, and also the history that goes along with it. You can count me in!

Okay, one of the things I enjoy about being here is the amazing diversity of knives on display here. This is one I never would have pursued, but after seeing so many pictures of it, it is on my list. I would love to win this one.

Something funny? Your catching me on the bluebird house on the thread about my grandfather's knife was such a remarkable reminder of his sense of humor that it created in me both a humorous response and a deep and personal reminder of how much I loved him. Thank you.

I have never entered a contest on bladeforums until now. Please count me in. This is a knife I have been interested in for some time.
I appreciate this opportunity.

Aw jeez, cv is one of my many weak spots. Okay, I'm in.

As for the Traditional forum, it's an amazing resource for collectors, aspiring collectors, the clueless, random folks with knives and questions, craftspeople, and outright crazy experts. The friendly and helpful tone of most posts create a welcoming atmosphere that turns out to be sincere; there are some damn fine folks participating over here. I've learned a great deal about my own hobby from the great information that has been shared here by others, and look forward to finding out more.

Thanks for the opportunity, Pertinux

Amber bone and CV I'm in, I like the forum cuz I like the people, and I like seeing different knives in a natural environment, online photos from sellers don't give a very clear image of a knife, I also like seeing what people use their knives for day to day. Most of all I like seeing pertinux's white owl :-), lots of good people and lots of good conversations. Thanks for a chance to win a nice looking knife, very generous.
