5160 forced patina

A couple of knives I have were getting a good patina, not dark or heavy but some good color with dark splotches . One is a mirror polished and the other is a satin finish. I was afraid of getting pitting started and not be able to see it so I decided to polish the mirror finished one and it did come back with a mirror finish but if you looked close up and with a magnifying glass it had very fine etching in patches. At arms length I couldn’t see it. The satin finish blade cleaned up nice but has a darker tone than when new as I have a similar one that’s still new to compare. I think I’ll let them patina again or maybe force it but I’ll be keeping them well oiled. I hate pitting.

Years ago i forced a oatina on a commercial skinning knife to look like feather damascus looks pretty cool, and that is the only prop i can give for carbon steel.

Looking forward to seeing the onion patina. You went with the grain so I’m expecting long lines the length of the blade?

I went the other way so I ended up with bullseyes and short lines across the blade.

Nothing to worry about the smell goes away in 2 or3 years.

My wife once used my CV sodbuster to carve a pumpkin. I couldn’t find it for two years.

I found it shoved in a cabinet all full of pumpkin guts. I washed it off with dish soap, sprayed it with a little WD40, and put a fresh edge on her. Looks great, and no pits at all. Just evenly dark.

Don’t fear the pateener. :)
