6 inch MILITARY

The pineapple is the best I could think of to justify the Vaquero Grande. You need a long blade to make the slice. The recurve facilitates the slicing action. The serrations are just the ticket for cutting off the husk. The AUS-8 steel is good for corrosion resistance (nice when working with acidic foods in a kitchen environment.)

If you don't eat pineapple, substitute home made bread.

For a bit of obligatory Spyderco content, I'll mention that as I'm typing this I'm eating an apple I peeled, cored and sliced with my wonderfully sharp, flat ground Calpyso Jr. BM. The thin, tapered blade is excellent for slicing apples without splitting them. It's not the best for peeling and paring, though, because the blade is a bit too wide. I generally prefer a narrower blade and a straghter handle for paring. So it's a toss-up between the Calypso Jr. and the Benchmade Leopard Cub I often carry.

James Mattis,
I have posted a couple of times on threads reguarding a Spyderco/Reeve collaboration. That would make me ecstatic-combining my two favorites. In one of them, can't remember which, Sal wrote that they have been trying to talk Mr. Reeve into such a venture to no avail. He suggested maybe we politely ask CRK about it. I'd be willing to go to Idaho if I thought they would actually do it. Large or small I would want one. I wouldn't care if it was a Spyderco version of the Sebenza or a Sebenza with the Spydy hole. Oh well, the whole (hole?) thing might be more than this knife freak could take. Might have to pop over to KF.C (finger licking good?) and start politely asking-over and over and over and over again.

Did you guys notice how SAL is steering away from this one. Don't worry Sal, the Political Correctness Police won't attack at first. Before they get wind of it, production of this model would end.

Seriously though, a Mega and Mini version of the Military would be nice. Rolling locks on all three.

You know, all you need to do is make the Military even larger...and claim it's a folding machete.

I have to agree with Tom on this one. I really dont see the use in a folder that size. I am not saying that there isn't a use for one, there just isn't a use for me. If I want a big knife, I want a fixed blade. Now a fixed blade military, I could go for.

There is a slight Chris Reeve collaboration brewing around in the background you know: remeber Sal teasing us with the CRK kitchen knives?! I am DYING to test THOSE babies out.

What's a "Blade Length Limit?"

hahaha....just kidding, guys. We just don't have one on the books in Indiana. Not that I or any police officer friends can find anyway.

I believe that in an earlier post Sal had mentioned that the Rolling Lock-REKAT/Spyderco collaboration- (on the Martial I believe) deal had fallen through. So there goes the Rolling Lock part of the equation. As for a Megafolder- yeah- would be cool & I'd probably buy one to keep my Vaquero company. But where Cold Steel has made no bones about the "weapon" aspect of some of it's knives, I believe Sal & co. have taken the "high road" (if there is such a thing) and focused on the tool/utility function. (But I also understand Mr. Glesser can open a Military fast enough to make your head spin

I can't resist adding my opinion to this thread.

I simply cannot imagine wanting a 6 inch folder of any design. The current Military is about as big as I'd ever want a folder to be. When I want a longer blade than 4 inches I look to a fixed blade design. I don't mean to step on toes here but a bigger folder seems like a novelty item....sort of like those 15 inch tourist trap cigars I used to see when I was a kid.... But I accept that different tastes exist for different folks.

Sometimes local laws determine what one can carry. In some states such as Kalifornia there is no legal limit to blade length of a folder (as long as it remains folded)that one may carry. On the other hand any fixed blade is illegal to carry in that same state! So for reasons exclusive to individuals, the largest blade length (6" in this case) that they can carry in a folder may be the only ticket.

I am betting that we will never see a "mega folder" from Syderco.

I would pray for a ltd. production run.

Perhaps we can peel back the onion here a bit. Basically I must agree with Ptn. for anything larger than a militry, I would opt for a FB, but for discussion's sake;

A medium duty large knife would not be wise for safety reasons. So a heavy duty large folder will need a heavy duty lock...say 400 inch/lbs, but given the extra two inches of leverage arm against the lock, 600 would be better.

As an MBC (Martial Blade Craft) knife, less than 200 inch/lbs per inch might be questionable for "passsing" against resistance. times 6" + one " for the tang = 7 inches times 200 inch/lbs = 1,400 inch/lbs.

Pretty tough given todays technology. We wouldn't want to produce a knife that was unsafe, even if it made money.

If it was possible to make the lock stgrong enough, this thing is starting to get pretty heavy. FB might be ligher.

Just some thoughts to share.
