7/8 Smiling Straight Razor in Crucible CPM154 and vintage canvas micarta

Matthew , that's fine looking butterscotch 'patina'. Have any idea how old it is ? Any indication of how it's held up over the years ? I assume the formulation might have changed a bit. Some of the new stuff has a strong formaldehyde smell which can be removed with a bit of heat as I've mentioned in other posts !

Hey Mete!!!

This stuff stank of formaldehyde pretty badly when I ground it, but it's quite reduced now. No clue on age. Josh may have a better idea, but I think he mentioned that this stuff was being used as a bench for someone... I'm guessing it's 50 years old or more.

Mete, I wouldn't know for sure.
The guy I bought it from said it sat in his barn/workshop for years using some of it as a bench topper as Matt said and most of the rest leaning against the barn. He worked for the company that made it where he said it was shelved for decades before he got a hold of it.
I gave some to Matt not even knowing how nice it was underneath. He discovered it making this amazing straight razor and I was floored how nice it looked. Not sure how the color will change as years go by, but it has a darker brownish color on the outside of the sheet I have.

Sitting around for years can make a big difference ! I made a settee of a slab of white oak which you would swear I stained to a very nice mocha. Nope , it sat for some 50 years .Originally a bit darker than most white oak because of minerals .But 50 years of oxidizing turned it into a beautiful mocha !! You can check the end of the slab where you can see the mocha layer on top of the lighter white oak.
The darkish brown you have is most likely an oxidized layer.

Smaller wheels are quite a bit easier, for me. Not sure why, really, but they've always been. The one the gives me the most trouble is my 12". I can grind effortlessly on my 1-1/2" wheel...

Photos to page two...

Matt: Superb. They've all given you the proper accolades. Props from me, too.

I'm curious how you held the backspacer in place. Tidy.
