710-1401 issues?

Don't disagree. Only reason I mentioned it in the other thread is because I found it curious, looking like it was done after the blade finishing.
I have inspected mine under magnification and confirm that it was indeed done after blade finishing.

Thanks for the confirmation! The manner in which it is done seems too exact to be incidental, along with all of the reports of it. I, too, enjoy the aesthetic of it. The grinds set it apart from the regular production model and contrast nicely with the polished hardware.

Just received my 710-1401, and it's in perfect condition. Centered, even swedges, no exposed tip. Couldn't be happier.

Got mine in today. Aesthetically everything is perfect. One issue, no matter what I do it has blade play.... What do you think I should do guys?

Is the play while the blade is closed AND open? Is it lateral, vertical or both? Try tightening your tension screw, it will be tougher to open and close, but it will break in. If after you up the tension to try to remove blade play, you find that it barely opens, or is Really hard to, I would then contact Benchmade.

You can also take a short vid and upload it to photo bucket then load it here to Show us what you mean.

Out of box there was vertical and horizontal blade play. Played with the pivot a lot and still some play. Tightened it to the point where I need two hands and I can still feel play. I don't know if benchmades are suppose to be this way or what... (might just be too used to "bank vault" lockups with some of my more expensive liner/frame locks). Either ways, I contacted KW and asked if they would exchange it. Disappointing since everything else about the knife is perfect.

Mine has Very little while closed, primarily due to the fact that I have the screw a little loose, and None while locked up.

That sounds like something faulty.I would contact a rep on here, see if you can get a direct number to call

Keep us posted on any updates.

Hi,
While I am fairly new to knife evaluation, I will jump in with my comments of my 710-1401 that I received yesterday. To start out, what a beautiful knife! This is my second Benchmade, with a 556s Min-Griptilian being my first, such a silky smooth opening and closing action.

The only noticeable cosmetic flaw on the 710 is a little light spot on the blue part of the scale that is easily noticeable. One thing I do not like is the closing action as it is not very smooth. When closing the blade I have noticed that there is a rough spot about 1/8“ prior to the pivot pin engaging the spine side tang notch. Upon close examination with a magnifying glass I noticed an uneven wear pattern at that spot on the tang and it looks like the pivot pin is only rubbing on one side of the tang just prior to engaging the spine side notch. In other words the milling on that part of the tang is uneven slopping from one side to the other. I can pull the pivot pin back with one hand and open and close the blade with my other and is little to no resistance/binding and it is not loose. Has anyone else noticed this or is this unique to my knife?

Thanks in advance for any feedback.

Hey Joe - I checked my 710-1s, which were the original M390 710s, and they have similar grind lines. So, whatever else is true, those grind lines are not some new change in BM F&F.

Yes J., after looking at my five 710's they all have the fine machine marks on the flat of the blade. Even my M390 710-1. Just saying.

Yes - FWIW, and I should have mentioned this earlier, the machine marks (finish grind lines?) on the flats of the other 710s are vertical, whereas the lines on the 710-1401 all seem to be curved. :)

Got mine today. Love the look and feel of this model. Probably the most excited I have been about a Benchmade in a good while. Centering and lockup are perfect. However the fat of my finger can get impaled by the tip of the blade since it seems to be sitting a little too high in the handle. Not sure what to do. Guess I could find someone with a grinder, but I will probably end up calling KW on Tuesday to see about an exchange.

I just took a diamond file to it and lowered it a little.

Now I just have to file the g10 down into the jimping to make it function a little better.

I also find the flat on the scale opposite of the pocket clip to be too smooth, it actually hinders drawing the knife from the pocket. About that, I am not sure what I'm going to do.
How does g10 feel when being ground, I would line to practice of some other material prior to attempting to alert my scales, aside from the jimping (I will be wearing gloves, respirator, and plenty of circulation).

I just noticed this on the KW website:

With the previous run, there was some issues with the blade height. We have received the second run and the issue is resolved. We have checked the knives and These are good to go.!!

This is the first sculptured Benchmade 710 production model that has been made.

I wonder how BM fixed the issues?

Good question,
I got one of the first ones and would love a crack at fixing it myself.
Cheers

Just got one of these,I have to say I'm liking the Black and Blue G-10 and a very welcome change from the regular. The blue standoff are also nice. Now to the bad - I do not like how the liners have a burrs and dings on the edge, closed the tip is 1/16" only away from the handle edge instead of the normal approx.1/8",and the blade has a combination of weird stonewashing and 45' grindlines.

I bought one from someone on here and it arrived yesterday. It also has a ding and a half inch long scratch on one of the liners. The swedge is wider on the M390 logo side as well as the flat part of the grind on the same side is wider than the other.

It will be going back on Monday for a blade replacement.

I bought mine from KW,the blade geometry is fine it's just the tip is so close to the edge. What a hassle, now I have to call them to get a RA# and then ship it back with tracking and insurance from Canada at a cost of $20.Reading their policy towards these problem they are not will to swap my knife for a new one but just issue a refund. I'll see what they're willing to do.
