710-1401 issues?

Interesting thread. So, with the first run 710-1401 having a blade that was slightly too tall, later to be corrected. could the same be said of the new Ritter Grips in M390? Doug mentioned they (Ritter Grips) were laser cut from the exact same profile that the original S30V models were. Yet we can visually see the blade height on the newer ones coming out seems to be shorter by at least 1/16". Maybe it's just a coincidence of some sort.

I'm a new member and just received my first Benchmade, a 710-1401 from knifeworks. For what it's worth, after reading this thread, I couldn't find anything wrong with it. Only negative Is it does not seem as 'dangerously' sharp as I hoped for. I did get it engraved though, and I wonder if knifeworks makes sure to use perfect ones for personalizing so those won't be as likely to be returned?...just a thought.

I have 3 710's and the blade in the 1401 sits higher than the others. It looks like the axis pin, which I think also functions as the stop for closed position, and the blade tang have a different relationship. It leaves the tip barely nested in the handle. I think it's weird that the knife had been around so long, and the fitment is way different.

Hate to say it,KW policy states all engraved items can not be returned.

My first knifeworks 710 had to be sent back because the pivot would back out even with locktite after a couple openings and the blade wasn't set properly in the handle. I got a new one and it does the same thing.. Any advice?

An update, just got my replacement from KW a while ago.Got dinged for return shipping.

The new one has significantly less liner dings but still one extremely tiny ding in the liner, the blade still has the weird grind marks and the blade when closed still almost protrudes from the handle.I did talk with BM about the tip and their solution was to grind it down.Besides all this I am EDCing this beauty.

You guys had me so damn nervous when I first came across this thread many months ago! I had my 710-1401 on order and found this thread. Thankfully my copy is stone cold perfect. Perfectly even grinds, not a single ding or mark on the liners, the G10 contours matched the liners perfectly. No flat spots, blade is dead centered, zero blade play, the tip has plenty of room when closed, the action is smooth and even while opening or closing. Ever since I first got my standard D2 710 a few years ago I have always hoped that BM would release a version with upgraded G10 that actually had texture and were not so slick. The G10 on the 1401 is indeed a big step up from the slick plastic feel of the standard G10 but I still feel it could be better. BM could have also chosen a better pattern for the blue/black combination than the kind of generic looking oval-burst blue black pattern. My KW 810 is 3D machined with a much more aggressive texture with machined grooves around 3/4 the edge of each scale it would have been most ideal on the 1401 as well. Thus I will be searching out some new blue color themed (to mach the awesome blue stand offs) G10 scales most likely from Keyman...

If you are reading this and are on the fence about the 1401 dont be. BM appears to have corrected the issues the first run had. That and KW dropped the price of the 1401 from $195 to $165 go for it.

I just came across this thread. Interesting discussion. I have 710-1401 arriving in the mail today. Keeping my fingers crossed.

Mine is great. I am not too picky though. Generally speaking, if its sharp and locks up good, I am happy. I plan on messing it up anyway.

My order for this knife arrived in the mail today. While I have a couple dozen other folding knives, this is my first Benchmade and my first impression is that it is a beautiful well made knife, but not perfect. Addressing the same issues that were identified by NJBillK:
The swedge is not symmetrical. The edge on the Benchmade Logo side tapers all the way to the tip of the blade. On the opposite side of the blade the swedge disappears at 1/4" inch from the tip. The Blade also is not centered at about a 2/3, 1/3 split. It's a bit puzzling since even my budget model CRKT Ripple ($30) has a symmetrical swedge and a perfectly centered blade.
There are no dings on the liner and the G-10 scales match perfectly around the entire circumference. Each side of the knife does have a flat spot on the G-10 at the tip end exactly like the pic provided by NJBillK (at least it's symmetrical). The tip does not protrude when the blade is closed.
Some other observations: Opening and closing are very smooth and one handed operation is very easy. The thumb stud opening is very quick and the blade lockup is very solid. There's no play front to back or side to side. The blade came reasonably sharp but not quite as sharp as several Spyderco's have been out of the box. Overall it has the feel of a quality knife but it's not quite up to the standards of the Taiwan Spyderco's or the ZT's. For me this knife is definitely a keeper and I'm sure it will become a favorite EDC. I would like to find a way to adjust the blade centering though. If anyone has any suggestions please let me know.
