710 Barrel Spacer mod?

My 710 is starting to hit the back spacer, so I'm sending it in to Benchmade to be fixed.

Anyone else done this? Can they actually correct the issue?

Also, should I have the spacer swapped out for barrel spacers? I like the way it looks and it's easier to keep clean but are there any disadvantages?

I just sent one in for the same reason and simply stated on the warranty form that I'd like it to be fit with barrel spacers. They have received the knife, so I should have back in a bit over a week. No word really if that is what they are going to do. In my initial correspondence, I told them the blade was hitting the plastic backspacer and was told the knife needed to be sent in to be "adjusted." I hope they do the conversion even if it costs me. I bought a used 710 off the exchange and it had factory backspacers already installed. So I feel like they are performing that conversion. There's a least a decent chance the other one gets converted. My fingers are crossed, but even if it's not rebuilt, it should at least be "adjusted" (I have no idea how you would adjust the depth the blade closes, but what do I know?) I'll try to find this post and update you when I get mine back.

I was told by a BM customer service rep that you have to specifically request the barrel spacers when ou send it in.

Had my 710's backspacer replaced due to the blade hitting the backspacer. They used round barrel spacers at first, but the 710 had serious bladeplay issues so I returned it. Benchmade then replaced the barrel spacers with hexagonal ones and I've had no problems since then. Benchmade did all this free of charge, didn't charge me shipping, sharpened, oiled, and fine-tuned it. I've been a happy camper since then.

I also had the blade on a 710 hit the plastic spacer; you could see the mark. Sent up for barrels which matched the studs nicely and the blade doesn't come anywhere near. And like Paul above, it didn't cost me a dime. That makes at least two happy campers if not more! :D

My 710 was doing the same thing. Sent it in and requested in writing to have them replace the back spacer with barrel spacers. Knife was returned with a new blade and no barrel spacers. Might depend on the individual that services your knife.

That's completely true, and in the mix is the 500+ knives that arrive every day for servicing - they have a lot of techs working with different ideas on how to get things done and sometimes make mistakes. But as a reminder If you're not happy call them. Customer Service is tops.

Hey Arrowhd, does it hit the spacer still? How do you think they adjusted for that?

Still slightly impacting near the tip. Paperwork says they replaced the blade, which they obviously did do. Nowhere near as bad as before. Still one of my favorites.

I was disappointed for sure. Not enough to pursue it any further though.

I just got mine back. They did the barrel spacer mod. It looks very well done. Spacers are round and on another 710 that I bought in the exchange, the spacers are more slotted looking. So I guess it really depends who services the knife and whether it can be "adjusted." Feels like a new knife.

Glad everything went well for you! BM service is top-notch.

does anyone know what model knife the barrel spacers come off of that benchmade uses for the mod on the 710. I could just as easily do it myself.

Welcome to the BKC sub-forum. Benchmade didn't use the barrel spacers from another model. Their spacers come from parts stock, and by requesting the mod they will remove the full plastic version in exchange. Note: any time we find the blade hitting the spacer is a warranty repair issue and shouldn't cost us a dime. If there are questions regarding any of this please call them at 800-800-7427 to check on the details.

I don't have pics, maybe others do. The quickest way to tell if the blade is hitting the spacer is to open the knife till it's locked and grab a flashlight. With the knife resting on the spine look at the underside to see if its scored. If it's not you're good. If it Is the blade's hitting the plastic and it's not supposed to do that. By simply replacing the full spacer with standoffs there's a lot more room for the edge to rest. I usually send mine up as there's a reason its hitting and they've always fixed the problem under warranty.

Here you go Joe.
These are not 710's.
But, they all look the same.

This is a 707...

and this is a 275.

Aside from checking the inside with a flashlight , are there any tell tale signs that the blade may be hitting the back spacer ?
