8 months with the Spyderco ZDP-189 FRN Stretch (warning: very picture heavy!)

As others have said, you did a most excellent and thorough review. It was no doubt a lot of work. Thank you VERY MUCH!!!

The liner rust is a little disconcerting at first, but does make sense considering that you immerse the knife in water on a weekly basis and took it to the ocean.

I have never really considered adding the Stretch to my arsenal, but may change my mind after this.

Hmml, if they would bring Stretch with G-10 handles (Orange) and with ZDP-189 combination, I'd buy it immediately. Now I just remain tough and not yet to buy it. I've been considered it many times.

Thank you for indepth review. Its nice to see how knives get used.

Greate!!!
I really like the comparison by magnification photo and all other details..
Thanks.

Update

This is going to mainly be a look at corrosion and such, not much new to report on the knife functionally. Since the last reporting the Stretch has had some more water-borne experience. First up was an entire day in a freshwater lake that didn't really show any corrosion, there was a very small spot of surface rust on the blade but that was all. The knife was cleaned up and carried regularly.

The next experience was more interesting. Corrosion on the steel seems to be a function of time, temperature and concentration. A few weeks ago the Stretch went for a little dip in a hot tub, temperature was reported around 100 degrees (F) and the knife was immersed a few times for periods of 10-15 minutes. After the little excursion quite a bit of surface rust was noted on the blade and tang of the knife. This was removed with light polishing and small circular pitting was noted in a few spots on the edge bevel. It is interesting to note that no corrosion appeared on the actual edge itself. The pitting was very minuscule and could not be felt without the use of special tools. You may need to clean your monitor to be able to see the spots, they were much more obvious in person. :o

Since it's been a little more than 3 months since the last disassembly I broke the knife down and noted any rust or corrosion inside.

Once again the corrosion follows a similar pattern of occurring under the liners where they contact the FRN. I did remove the rust and plan to use the knife as regular and see where it stands after 3 months, with a coat of oil applied to the liners. This should help provide a clear picture of what can be done to reduce the corrosion.

All in all I'm comfortable with how it's coming along, the rust is contained and still remains on the surface. It doesn't look like an pitting is occuring, a good thing for longevity's sake.

The knife now sports what is close to a 15 degree inclusive edge profile. No microbevel has been applied yet and performance is phenomenal. This knife gets used for EDC tasks so we shall see what happens with this type of acute profile.

So there it is, still chugging along as close to perfect as a production knife can be. :)

spoonrobot you really wring out your folders. i have a ffg zdp enduea on the way . my stretch was tested again thisc weekend with very favorable results. this stretch had been beveled back & cut great.

Outstanding review! Also impressed that you went with the more affordable heavy hitters from Norton than the expensive world of waterstones.

I bought an FRN Stretch after seeing this thread, and it has become one of my top 3 favorite EDC Spydies (along with Delica and Military). At just a tad bigger than the awesome Delica, it fits my hand nicely, and I like both the look and function of the blade shape.

This is a great thread thank you for all the effort spoonrobot. I think I need one of these after seeing this thread!

Thanks for all the kind words guys.

It is with great regret that I have to cut this review short on account of the fact that I've recently relocated the knife to permanent storage on the bottom of the largest man-made lake in Alabama. :(

I'll be sure to update if I ever retrieve it. Should show some really interesting corrosion results. :D

RIP FRN ZDP Stretch.

It would be amazing to see it recovered and this continued, but that sounds pretty unlikely.

spoonrobot- that was one hell of a review!! It belongs in a knife magazine.

That has to be the best review of any knife I have seen on BF in a long time.

Sal should hire you as a field tester for their model changes and prototypes

Sorry you lost your knife.

One thing that came to my mind is the way you give a bath and just shake it off. When I bathe my knives, I'll hold a hair dryer on them on low heat for a few minutes. Compressed air might serve the same purpose, or compressed air followed by a hair dryer might be the best of both worlds. I can just imagine you leaving water in there every time you dunk it.:eek:

Wow! Some reviews are thorough. Some are detailed. This is one of the few that's both. I also like it's overall "developmental" tone after a period of use in the medium term.

As the others have said, a nicely presented review! Thanks for sharing

Most excellent unbiased review.
Bringing this back to the forefront. Too many people these days afraid of corrosion on their ZDP-189. This goes to show it should be of little concern.

I wonder how that knife is doing now still swimming... :p
