Tested my spyderco tenacious on various cardboard and wood.....its got nice convex edge but knife loses its sharpness much faster than bm154cm or vg10......paying extra money is worth it ....i wish tenacious had vg10 blade....this chinese steel is ok but I dont liker it at all! Also 154cm and vg10 take much sharper edge much easier.........quality of steel is evident for sure!!!!!!!!!!

i have a chinese buck 110 knockoff that i bought for 10 bucks and it cuts and holds edge much better than tenacious. Also takes hair splitting edge easily......

I have had no problem getting a super sharp edge on my Tenacious but yes it does not hold an edge all that long ,maybe the goal was ease of sharpening. I have not had anything stand up to S30V for edge holding but I sometimes wonder if edge holding is worth the extra effort to sharpen.

I use my Tenacious as an EDC, and because it's cheap, I don't baby it like a would a more expensive knife.

Sure it needs a bit more sharpening, but I've cut things (like wire, metal foil), scraping glass and carving wood, in ways I never would my Para-Military II.

And it''s still in good shape after quite a bit of abuse and misuse.

You get what you pay for.

If you dont like the 8cr13mov, fork out another 20-30 bucks and get a delica.

I dont expect a super steel when i get a $35 knife, i really dont mind 8cr13mov though. Pretty good when it comes to cheaper knives.

But the dilemma is that the Tenacious is such a nice design...

I agree with both of you.
I have an Endura but i do love the design and ease of opening with the Tenacious

I'll admit that VG10 is my favorite steel, and if Spyderco made a Tenacious in VG10 I'd buy several. That said, as an EDC knife my Tenacious sees a lot more work than my Endura. I don't use it on wood that often, mostly paper, tape and cardboard. It's super easy to touch up with the Sharpmaker extra fine or a strop, so I don't mind that it can't keep the edge as long as the Endura.

@boki_zca
The Tenacious can take a super fine edge easily, but it doesn't hold up well under use. I keep mine hair shaving (not popping) sharp most of the time and it's adequate for my use.

I bought a Red Skyline for $25, it comes in 14C28N and feels pretty super:thumbup:.

The Tenacious is an awesome knife for the money and the 8Cr13MoV performs well for what it is. It picks up a great edge readily but yes, it goes quickly too.
I've said before that the Tenacious is deserving of a better steel and I'd prefer it over the Manix 2 if it came in S30V or something equivalent. Still, it's nothing to complain about as it is, and it's one of only two or three inexpensive folders that I regularly carry. In practice it performs just as well as folders costing hundreds of dollars. It's the only knife that makes me question my sanity when I consider all the high-end folders I have and all the money that went into them.

Philwar, I totally agree. The Tenacious sometimes causes me to re-think purchasing certain, much more expensive folders. I just use it so much more than most of my other knives, & I absolutely love the design! I have no problem with the steel at all, & I agree it does not hold an edge so well, but it takes a great edge, for sure, and I am one of those people that truly enjoys sharpening my blades (I use a whetstone, like my grandpa taught me, and I love it!), Also, it was so damn cheap! Noctis3880, I don't have a Skyline yet, but I 'm strongly considering one as my next purchase. Do you love it? Do you have a Tenacious, and if so, how do they compare?

On that note, I'll say it again: the Tenacious is a knife that should be made in Japan or the US with a better steel. I mean, I'm sure that the sales on the Tenacious are amazing because of the price and all, but speaking in terms of the "Spirit of the Blade," the design really deserves better steel and quality.

I own and carry several 8Cr13MoV: Sanrenmu, Enlan. Navy stated 440C but I suspect it's also same steel. Reprofile them all to 20-30 degree inclusive. Polish them with homemade strop. I only need stropping to maintain the edge!

To say it's less than 154cm or VG10 makes sense. On the other hand, I find it holds edge better than SAK's similar steel. However, to say it is less than a cheap china copy of buck is a bit questionable.

Today I used my Navy as steak knife to eat Pizza from the box two times, lunch & dinner, opened 3 x 500 gr kimchee (Korean pickled vegetable) cut them to slices, sliced open some instant coffee mix packs and at the end, it still shaved nicely (no drag/hair pulling on my face).

I'd request OP to do side by side test wih the buck copy starting with same grind/sharpness. The only possibility is the china buck copy uses carbon steel (non stainless) to outlasts 8Cr13MoV.

I don't see the Tenacious lacking in quality, it is as well built as the Manix 2 in terms of F&F and materials. Sorry to rain on the chauvinist Americans' parade but it's just that simple: Spyderco has their quality control in order all over the planet. The Gayle Bradley (Taiwan) is the best made Spyderco that I know of, and I own a few and have handled most of them. I have no doubt the Vallotton (Taiwan) is equally flawless. I recently traded away a Para 2 Sprint run, and while it is of excellent build quality, it doesn't in any meaningful way surpass the Tenacious.
Having it built in the US in no way guarantees an increase in quality. Sorry.

Ya just can't do much better than good old S30V w/o shelling out a lot of bacon ($$). Takes a liltle time to get it razor sharp and as the new edge wears it goes into a long holding pattern of sharpness that's just excellent. I think the key to it is never let it get REALLY DULL. ;)

I know you think that I'm trying to wrap myself in the American flag, but the quality of the Tenacious simply doesn't match that of the Manix 2, as you state. I've had one Tenacious and have convinced several friends to purchase their own.

The quality on the Tenacious isn't terrible. It isn't even bad; that's not what I'm saying. But to say that it's "as well built as the Manix 2" is absolutely false, or at least it is in the several examples of the model that I have seen.

Nobody said that America is the only place that builds knives of high quality. You multi-culti trumpeters really need to stop attacking everyone who suggests that chinese goods might lack a thing or two here and there.

He said "Japan or the US with a better steel." What this has to do with "the chauvinist Americans' parade" escapes me. But when all you have is a hammer, everything starts looking like a nail.

Erm, yes it does. I own them both, held them side by side and compared every detail.
I've also asked lay people which one they thought was more expensive, better built, etc. Results were roughly 50/50.

You certainly implied it by saying the Tenacious would improve by having it made in the US.

You multi-culti trumpeters really need to stop attacking everyone who suggests that chinese goods might lack a thing or two here and there.
Straw men. They are thick in the air tonight. And calling me a multi-culti trumpeter is like saying Obama is in favor of small government. ;)

What escapes me is how your hammer/nail saying applies to this debate. Or maybe the saying is your hammer, and every debate started looking like a nail... :D

or, THG said, "Japan . . . with a better steel."
