True the blade steel isnt the best - but for $40ish bucks and g10 I still think its a good deal for a knife fan. And a great deal for your average "this one looks cool" outdoorsman.

I totally agree.

This knife got me into knives in the first place and I was perfectly happy with it. It is a quality knife, not the best but it sure does not suck!
 
I think that's what Spyderco was going for with this "value" knife for your average guy (not knife nuts like us). They have to cut costs somehow - everyone will notice the nice handle quality - very few will notice the blade steel. IMHO.
