yep that sucks--when they do an auction---that is what it is--let it run---I figure it aint fair to the other bidders to take an offer like that---maybe you would have paid more than what the guy offered him---so it is actually his-the sellers loss....

You can end an auction as long as there are more than 12 hours left if I remember correctly. A lot of loopholes on both sides.

you pay a penalty when you end an auction= I think it is equal to a final value fee at whatever the bid stands at -at the time...and yes it has to have 12 hours left....

The trouble with those back door deals (other than being ethically questionable) you loose any buyer protection you would have through eBay. You really need to know the seller well.

On some forums I frequent sellers will post links to their auctions, say to make an offer, but make it clear once there is even one bid, it has to remain at auction.

Eight years ago I picked up a 653 with the Tanto point and shieth for under $5.00 with $3.00 shipping ..I called it my Ebay trophy Buck and wore it a few days at the Blade. Show...I also got a almost nasty note from the seller telling me how great a deal I got..One time I won a auction for a new Buck at 25% of retail and then got a message saying he couldn't find it lol!

Can't remember what Buck knife it was but it was a new LE knife at a cheap price on a BIN. The seller contacted me afterwards saying his employee posted the wrong price and he would not sell it to me at a loss and did not care if I left a negative review and refunded the $$.

You can end your own auction with 1 second left, not just before 12 hours, although I don't think many have done that. You can cancel a bid on an item if there is more than 12 hours left. I've found that if there is a knife I really want on Ebay I write the seller right off to see if they would be interested in a Buy it now option and I explain to them I really don't mind if they will not do a buy it now, but would like an opportunity to get the knife. I do this so the seller knows I'm interested and won't just end it for someone else.Even in this case the seller sent me a message asking if I would be OK with the auction ending early because they had an offer they couldn't refuse. I told them no issues from me if the offer was above X amount. It has worked in my favor a couple times but in most cases it goes for some stupid price like that 110 pearl that ended yesterday.

Craig, it is easy to say you wouldn't end an auction early when you only list Buy it now's:D

mike I have still done auctions over the winter months up to this year---I will probably start doing some auctions again soon---but sorry probably not any buck knives---summertime is the worst time for a seller to do auctions---it is buyers market right now for auctions....that is all I used to do was auctions--even when I started selling buck knives it was all auctions--13 years on the job and still doing it ive seen it all on feebay…
:D:D:D:D:D:thumbsup::thumbsup::):):):)

and that is my standard reply to people that ask me if I would take this for an item when it has bids "that would not be fair to the other bidders but you are welcome to bid" sometimes it did not sell for that offer but 95% of the time it has sold for more... only in the winter :D

here we go all of feebays rules an regulations--

You can end your auction listing early, if:

  • There are no bids yet on your item
  • There are bids on your item, and you are willing to sell your item to the current highest bidder
  • There are bids on your item and you don't want to sell it to the highest bidder, but there are 12 or more hours left in the listing. In this situation, you'll need to cancel all active bids before you can end your listing. We charge a fee for ending a listing in this way
You can't end your auction listing early, if:

  • There are fewer than 12 hours left in the listing, you've received bids, and you don't want to sell it to the highest bidder
  • There are fewer than 12 hours left in the listing, you've received bids, but the item's reserve price hasn't been met yet

Of courze Ebay is going to say you can't end an auction with less than 12 hours left. Yes, those are the rules, but i would bet a fair amount all you have to do is go to "end auction". And even with less than 12 hours left you will be able to end your auction.

Craig, i haven't sold nearly ad many knives as you, but i can guarantee I've ended more auctions with less than 12 hours left than you have....there were a few that i was just not willing to let go of and especially for how low the bids were on the final morning

that's what im talking about auctions brother---man it is a buyers market---that is why I do all buy it nows for knives---I just cant lose that much money on them---but watch I am going to start doing some tools soon and I guarantee I aint ending no auctions early cuz I want that stuff GONE!!!!:D:D:D:D:thumbsup:

I try and start mine at lowest that I would accept... I had one I started at 99$ no bidder's and when it relisted I changed it to a lower price and it sold for 117$? Go figure... That's what an auction is all about, a Gamble.

The problem for me as a buyer is that your strategy will never see my bid as I try to only bid once with the most I am willing pay in the last 10 seconds of the auction.
Any bid I place earlier is silly because of the people that will enter 10, 20, even 30 bids until they get a dollar over you. Use a BIN or set a reserve if you are worried the auction will not perform. The serious smart money only bids at the end. The only reason I placed a bid early on the D-Guard was to help generate some bid traffic and ward off what ended up happening anyways.... the auction ending early. My actual bid had the auction continued to completion would have been many orders of magnitude greater.
