After picking up a Benchmade 535 and 4400 recently I've been looking at purchasing a ZT 0770 CPM-M4 (exclusive KSF) or a 940-1 CPM-90 or 940-1501 CPM-20v (G10 exclusive KnifeWorks).

I couldn't decide between the 940 or 0770 so decided to buy both :)
I already ordered the ZT 0770 M4 this evening so now I am trying to figure out which 940 to order. Wish I could order both, however two super nice knifes is all the budget for this month.

I had my mind fixed on the 940-1 until I came across a post on the KnifeWorks 940-1501 exclusive and really like the looks of the G10 black/blue combo and it has me wondering if the G10 may hold up better over time being carried? Plus the 940-1501 is also $60 cheaper overall.

I'm not sure how the two steels 90v and 20v would compare also both are listed as super premium steels on my knife steel chart.

Anyone have any thoughts or experience with these two versions of the 940?

S90V is an absolute bear to sharpen and likes a toothy edge. 20CV is just American M390, so you can polish it up to a mirror and be happy. 20CV is easier to sharpen by a smidge, but neither are pleasant.

Cool thanks for the info. I haven't had the chance to use Alot of these so called super/ premium steels. I've mainly owned/used S30v, S35v Elmax ,154cm, AtS34 and D2 in my higher end and custom knifes I have. I have really liked the Elmax blades I have as I can get them crazy sharp and the edge last a good while for my uses.

I'm really leaning towards the 940-1501 may just place the order tonight and get it over with.

Wellllllll let me say this about that :
I would rather have the 20V (I like mirror / refined edges more than toothy)
I bought the Carbon fiber S90V mostly because I was living and dying for the carbon fiber in the 940 it just seemed like a perfect 940 handle material wise.
I am OK with the black and blue, I like it well enough, but decided after much mulling that I much preferred the Carbon Fiber. Also I have a 710 Benchmade with sorta the same handle color combo though different in it's execution with M390 (as was said M390 is same as 20V).

I had no S90V so I told myself this would give me a chance to try it out.
Some thoughts on the S90V :
No problem AT ALL to sharpen as long as you have some diamond plates.
It's good stuff, unless you are really into the refined polished edges like I am, I would say get it you won't regret it.

Doing it again I would DEFINITELY still get the one I bought. VERY COOL KNIFE ! ! !
I LOVE IT ! ! ! ! WORTH THE MONEY.

I don't suppose that helped you but there you have it.

I had both. I ended up selling the 1501. For me, that blue just stood out too much (odd, since I love my 535). I just couldn’t warm up to the look of it. That’s all subjective, though. The -1 I kept and will never let that one go.

Looks like a carbon fiber night BM 940-1 now ordered along with the earlier ordered ZT0770 -M4

Carbon fiber, it's what's for dinner because we can't afford to eat the rest of the month now. LOL

There's always next month ;)

Great choice P64!
My favorite folder, period.

I have the 940-1 and it's beautiful. I actually dislike carbon fiber usually. Of course it's usually a thin strip on top of something else. This cf shimmers but isn't shiny, depth I suppose. S90v is not the nicest steel or the prettiest edge but that toothy edge will cut forever.

The blue black looks nice in a picture but I can see where in person it would not be as nice.

You can do this to the too-bright blue:

I have both. I prefer 20CV over S90V, but the carbon fiber scales and dark stonewash finish on the 940-1 blade has totally won me over. Nothing wrong with the blue/black G10, I just prefer the beauty and feel of the CF. The 940-1 is a little lighter--not much--but I can feel the difference and I also prefer that.

The 940-1’s handle has worn in wonderfully for me over the years. I don’t like the steel, however. I wish Benchmade would let me swap the 20CV blade onto it.

Monday the 940-1 arrives can’t wait.

I can see myself ordering a 940-1501 down the road also.

That looks good. Is that a RIT dye job?
It is. At first, I tried sunshine yellow to make a black-green handle to go with the green standoffs from a 940-2, but it didn't set in well at all. I decided to follow that up with black to just make it black instead, but it didn't make it completely black. I ended up with the dark blue-green/teal that it has now, which looks really good with the green standoffs.

I have a 1501 inbound (my first 940) and I will definitely be dying the handle. Any tips for the process?

I have dyed 6-7 knives now. Use liquid rit dye if your going to go with black add a little Forrest green to help get it to true black. I use the liquid undiluted no water but use white vinager and salt put scales in pot bring mixture to boil then drop temp to a simmer till desired color is reached I've had some colors take a few minutes while others take hours just be patient. Mixture is kind of by eyeball but half bottle liquid, half cup vinager, table spoon salt. If you can't get it you can send it to me I can do it for you. I only charge shipping and price of dye.(I don't make a dime)
