940-1 vs 940-1501

Never thought it possible but I have 3 940's and the 1501 is actually my favorite. Honestly can't put my finger on why either? All three perfect but a bit different in their own ways. My 1501 is the 'quietest' of the three. Almost a muffled 'clack' when snapping shut. Love all 3, but 1501 all day...

I have a 1501 inbound (my first 940) and I will definitely be dying the handle. Any tips for the process?
I use the full bottle, 1qt water, 1/2cup white vinegar, and simmer it for a couple hours, especially if you're going for black.

Man, the newer white/black G10 gives better color rendition than the older gray/black they use on the Rift! Kelly Green looks much lighter than what it does on the gray/black:

Two of these are the grey /black the green one is the whiter grey and black. I didn't like the Kelly green so I custom mixed dandilion yellow and aqua marine to make lime green since colors tend to darken. It also took hours to get to that green color and several trips to the store. That's when I found out other brands of dye don't work.

The ZT 0770 M4 and BM 940-1 both arrived today and I’m very happy with both of them.

Not much to say on the 940-1 like the other 940’s out there it has to be one of the top EDC knives made right now. Lite, thin and a great blade length/shape.

Having owned several ZT knifes I can say they have been rock solid for me. The 0770 just shaves some oz’s of the design making it Alittle more EDC friendly compared to some of my heavier ZT models. The M4 steel and blade shape seems to really grab and slice anything it makes contact with it’s a interesting design.

I added both to my current models I like carry at work, hiking and out on the town.

I received the 940-1501 today and am impressed. I've only owned one other Benchmade knife (a Torrent) and this is a well made knife. The fit and finish is really good, I like the smooth G10 and the blade is almost dead center. I asked for a hand picked knife when I ordered this one and I did get a really nice knife. The grind appears to be symmetrical, but I won't know for sure until I put it on the Wicked Edge. I don't mind the shade of blue that is on this knife and may not dye the scales. I definitely do not like the pocket clip (regular style) and will be calling Benchmade and asking for a replacement. I like carbon fiber, but probably not enough to buy another 940. If Benchmade makes a titanium scaled version, I would probably pony up the cash for another, especially in a stainless other than S30V.

Personally, I like the look of the blue on the 1501. I plan to order one down the road these 940’s are just great carry knives it wouldn’t hurt to have two :)

I was also happy with the grind and blade alignment on my 940-1. I see a few Youtuber’s picking on the BM grind on S90v blades but mine looks very uniform and well finished.

The only thing I could pick-on is the screws being to long and you can see the tips inside the scales if you look. It’s no deal breaker but I’m not blind that BM could have did a better job on screw length.

I love my 940-1. It is my favorite knife. The s90v is such an agressive cutter. It is such a unique steel. I agree with cypress, the s90 really does not like to have too refined of an edge. When i go up to my white spyderco ceramics it seems to loose its effectiveness. so, i now go up only to my spyderco brown ceramic and then stop.

The carbon fiber looks the same as when i first bought it. it is the slowest wearing handle material i have had. Ive had, frn, g10, stainless steel, aluminum, titanium. I have carried my 940-1 almost everyday for almost 2 years now

Does anyone have any pics of how the CF handles wear on these 940-1's?
I tried to find a better pic but no luck. Had mine a couple yrs. No hard use but I don't baby it either. It definitely takes drops on the concrete floor better than my aluminum. :) The aluminum has held up better than expected also. Just trade out the clip every once in a while.

I've found all of my cf knives to be very wear resistant but I like the looks of the -1 the best.

that green 940 is beautiful. I have dropped my 940-1 on to concrete and the mark it made is so small, you need to have good light and look very closely to see it.

Thanks mt85,
It was my first BM. Stupid good drop free smooth, fit and finish. I can hold it open parallel to the ground release the lock and it will drop free and close with no flick and no blade play.
It set an unreasonably high bar for the knives that came after. :)

I think i may be one of the few who actually likes the stock benchmade 940-1 clip. I think it is very useable. it slips into pocket whitout a thought; and the nice spoon at the bottom makes for a great grip from which to draw the knife. It has excellent retention too. And with the combination of the tension, the light weight of the knife and the slight texture of cf, the knife does not budge even a fraction of an in while in pocket.

microtech85, I like the stock clip, too, but I have a deep carry on my 940. I prefer to keep my knife at least somewhat hidden from public view. Starting to rethink that though.

I also like the stock 940 pocket clip for my use. I bought a custom made deep carry clip a while back for my allum 940, however ended up going back to the factory one. I just left my new 940-1 factory also.

I couldn’t stand it and yesterday was pay day so I ordered a new 940-1501 from Knife works to add to my growing 940 collection :)

Cool thanks for the info. I haven't had the chance to use Alot of these so called super/ premium steels. I've mainly owned/used S30v, S35v Elmax ,154cm, AtS34 and D2 in my higher end and custom knifes I have. I have really liked the Elmax blades I have as I can get them crazy sharp and the edge last a good while for my uses.

I'm really leaning towards the 940-1501 may just place the order tonight and get it over with.

If you have had good results with Elmax then you will get similar results with 20cv. 20cv is the same recipie as m390 which is something like Elmax with its alloying elements increased a little bit. So m390 and therefor 20cv behave alot like Elmax on steroids.

Heat treat depending of course.
