97lb rattlesnake ??

BS on the weight, that's for sure.

I killed a 6 footer before (Eastern Diamondback), and it weighed MAYBE 30 pounds.

I don't care how much it weighs, it would still feed three of us for three or four days. DAMN!

In the story posted about the largest one, that's funny! It seems like every state with a mountain has a "Gobbler's Knob" and everyone knows what people go up there to do, too. :D

Hey Lone Gunman, I am Willoughby. Send me a PM when you get here, we'll do lunch.

That was a line from one of my favorite " Twilight Zone " episodes. A guy riding a train home from his miserable job falls asleep. Wakes when the conductor calls "Next stop...Willoughby ! " A small town where everything is quiet and perfect. I used to live in Parma Ohio when younger. Not so quiet and perfect. hows your Willoughby ??

Rattlers get that big in Washington. 6ft. long and as big around as your leg--they were hideous monsters. Shotguns took care of them. They however were no where near that weight.

Hear is a western diamond back from Arizona, he's 6 1/2 foot.

The weight's got to be a huge exaggeration. The last one I killed was the biggest I've killed, or seen in person, since I was a kid. It was about 4', and fat. I doubt it weighed more than 10-12lb.
My parents live in a neighborhood built over an old farm that is like snake haven. The crew that cut a 1/4 mile addition to the road killed a rattler for every 10yds. of road.
I've got a picture from one of their neighbor's camera phone from one last year that was (edit:supposedly) 6'. Excuse the quality. It's a picture of a crappy printout.

What you can't tell is that the pole the guy is holding is around 15 feet long. :D

Sorry for the thread jack.... Hey BlackHills I like that clear cover on the bike.. what bike is it???
If that snake was 97lb i would expect it to be much longer or with very thick body. When ever i see pic on the net i take them with a tablespoon of salt. As the few grains dont help much.

You can't hold 96 lbs on the end of a pole unless you're really strong and he doesn't look that strong.

I wonder do you guys always kill a rattler when you see one???? I always push them to the the side of the trail. Now if i find a 6' and i know i would be back home in enough time to cook it then its a diffrent story. But i never kill them... Heck im hiking in there back yard. Seems that everyone is up to killing them on sight..

BlackHills talk about a rattler you got there lol.. There is a company that makes clear covers for sport bikes been eyeing one.

Sasha

I agree with most, Looks like the perspective is making the snake appear larger. Either way it looks like a fine meal.

The red stick actually looks like an old persons reaching stick.

I kill them, if they are on the property around the house. My wife was bit by a ground rattler, about six years ago, while walking on the driveway right at dusk. My Dad was bit by a cottonmouth while walking down to the water to go fishing. That's been a pretty good bit back. I dropped a short, fat cottonmouth on my flip-flop covered foot, summer before last, while moving firewood. I did not get bit, but when he coiled I was stuck between him and a boat trailer. I shot him with the snubby in my pocket, I was thankful I had it. In the woods, I'll let them go most the time.

Sorry, where I come from there are NO snakes at all, ever,...you guys seem to be saying you EAT them???????Are you serious?

No, I never kill them. Usually, I photograph them until they get bored and leave.

The Eastern Diamond back is the heaviest of all venomous snake and I'm pretty sure the world record is around 30 pounds. My dad and a friend caught one back in the Florida Keys in the late 60's that was like 7 feet and it was HUGE!!!!!! Its head was about as big as your fist, but it didn't weight any more than maybe 20 pounds. The anaconda gets over 300 pounds, but that is because it lives in water and doesn't have to move its body around land. Big pythons of similar length usually weigh quite a bit less. I;ve handled a couple of boas in that size range and while they were hefty snales, they didn't weight anything close to 100 pounds....probably not even half that....... and they are a chubbier snake than a rattler. also. what are the chances that the average redneck could actually hold a 100 lb snake out on the end of a stick for a photo op? All that aside, it is still a big freakin snake!!!!!!!

Rattlesnakes are fairly rare in my area. Even in the areas where they are more common I haven't seen one since I was a kid.

I don't normally bother them unless they bother me. I've never seen any in the yard...that might be a different story if I did. They're pretty common around here, I used to work at a place where I'd see 15-20 every summer. They loved to come lay up on the concrete at night and they'd often still be there in the mornings.

They taste just like chicken. :D Seriously, they aren't bad at all if they're done right. Just google 'rattlesnake recipe' and you'll find lots of sites.

sad to kill them IMO. They are just animals and we have invaded their homes and not the other way around.

what a waste:(

Ironically they do us a lot of good by keeping other pest populatins down (rats=P)
