I think it started for aesthetic purposes. Some just really like the look of it. Whether they keep it polished or want it to turn green. I do not care for it, but im not going to worry about those who do. Those people likely hate my carbon fiber and purple stuff. Super conductor somtimes has copper in it with other reactive metals. Could be a poor mans version.

Cause it's only the coolest metal on earth. :D
Might pick up one of these one day.

Boredom with traditional materials may be a factor. Also, some folks like the messy patina and, assuming a decorative piece and not structural, the easy dent and scratch and smell.

It can look nice sometimes.

messy looking patina

My copper Maratac finds this statement offensive!!!

But no, seriously... I really like the look of copper when it's all worn in and old looking.

Are you the type of person that keeps your shoes looking nice and clean? Or do you like them nice and worn in and kinda dirty? If you're the later, you'd probably enjoy copper a whole lot...

I don't have a good reason for you but I can say that I love copper I have no idea why it's just a beautiful metal even when it patinas.
I've had a knife in the works for a couple years and it's going to have thick 1/8" copper liners.

 very nice patina on that maratac!

Thanks brother!

asdf, I think the flashlight collectors may have something to do with the recent surge in copper embellishments you describe on knives. Many flashlight freaks love copper lights (like myself). If you spend any time on CP Forums, you'll see what I'm talking about.

For some people, lights and knives are essential items, and since they are both considered EDC items by many people, some aesthetic traits may be shared. It's probably the same reason why titanium lights/knives are so popular.

Does anyone have insight into why copper components are becoming more popular on custom knives or as replacement parts on modified production knives?

From a materials standpoint, especially for structural parts like scales and standoffs, I don't get it. Low strength and is more easily scratched or dented compared to other materials. Quickly forming, messy looking patina. Gives off an odour and reacts with skin oils and sweat.

I like many different styles of knives. The high-speed/ low-drag cutting edge stuff is cool, but I also like the old school and everything in between.

For example...

Mecha just finished forging a bronze knife for me. It is literally all bronze.:D:D:D

Here are some pictures of his work that he posted in the custom forum...

I asked him to make a bare handle so that I could fiddle around with making one.

Different strokes for different folks.:D:thumbup:

Don't get me wrong, I like 'old school' stuff, but I draw the line at materials that were phased out centuries ago as a blade material..

This makes a lot of sense. Thanks!

The patina also comes off fairly easily. I haven't had a problem keeping my Kabar/CS Coppersmith Dog's Head Trapper looking brand new, more or less.

I'll have to say that I do not dig copper at all. I personally do not care for the green patina but mostly I hate the smell on my hands. Maybe it's an OCD type of thing. When I see a 2k+ custom knife with copper handles all I can think of is that they may have melted down $5 worth of pennies to make it. Yes, I know, they probably didn't.
The latest one I've seen lately.. couldn't imagine me ever buying this one.

Now I want a frame lock made from super conductor with lightning strike carbon fiber scales... might as well make the blade out of timascus while I'm at it.

One of the cool kids said it was cool.

Personally, i don't like it on knives or lights...it is cool for gutters under a badass Tudor style roof though.

Because Big Mark408 does not like it, he's a GOLD member. My only guess at this point.
