A becker for bushcraft: what would you recommend?

Doc, I can get you some. I have large hands in terms of long fingers (wear an XL glove), but I don't have the mutant Polish sausage fingers that Dubz and the Viking have. :p

Id say Ethan.... it seems he keeps a stihl close, plus has some good blades on hand.... I really doubt he would approve of my cooking though :)

Hell i married a puerto rican for the FOOD! got tired of microwavables and MREs.... the first bowl of pollo guisado earned her a ring!

Though many prefer the larger 16/17, I think the Eskabar with the zytel scales is a good choice for a small bushcraft blade and fits my hand just fine.

Let me start by saying the stock scales (on the 15/16/17 and the add-ons for the 14/24) are just fine. They're functional for me, and I don't have a problem carrying either set.
However, maybe because of my large hands, I do prefer a fuller feel when I can manage it. Thus, I do like liners on my Tweeners/Shorts. In this regard, mrn8's G10 liners are good stuff.
And I do like my Sh@rp set of scales a little better on my 24.

Thanks Guyon. I have thought about getting a 16 but am concerned that it might be too small in the handle.

I would consider a 14 but I have an Izula and the handle is just too small. The Izula II, OTOH is perfect. It's too bad the Eskabar didn't use the IzzyII handle.

My hands are huge, (almost the size of 1066vik's) and XL gloves fit tight, but here's a pic of my 16 in hand.

The 16 is my goto blade for most things, including bushcrafting. Even above my Mora bushcrafter (which has nothing wrong with it.)
I just like the 16 more and the swells in the grips make it comfortable to use often and for longer periods.

Nothing wrong with the 14 either, it was my 16 before the 16 came out! It just depends on your weight to frequency of work ratio.

hey guys, whats up,new to the forum, but not to blades, been loving and collecting knives since i was a little kid, i would recommend a bk2,its got a good belly for slicing, its thick and tough, you can pry with it,dig even...great for chopping,go for the bk2!

Thanks PointyEnd. Don't you find the 14's handle too short?

Doc

Not really, just too short to use as much or as heavily as I do my 16. My guess is that I'm adapting my grip to it somehow, but it is currently on loan to a friend, I will check it out on its return. IIRC, I can feel the back of the "ring" with my pinky; and a good cord wrap of Zytel goes a long way.

I'll chime in :-). Bk-11! It's small, light, and has alot of versatility. Hehe. Plus they aren't expensive. That's always a bonus. Work the edge to your liking, give it scales or a wraping and you've got a reliable little companion. Also, a Bk-2 is a fine option as well..a lil' bit longer than the Bk-11..but alot thicker and heavier though. If the Bk-2's scales are too thick for you, you could always have a custom set made or simply paracord wrap it. I recently found a picture of a nude bk-2...for some reason I'd been thinking they weren't skeletal tang. Hmmm..strange, I've come to prefer skeletal tangs..I blame the Bk-11 for that. I wonder if one could fill the forward gap with weight to enhance chopping power, by using a two finger grip around the base??

You could use all of them. But I have a bk-11, Bk-16 and have used a bk-14. The 16 is the best for bushcrafty stuff and the 11 and 14 are best for edc. The 16 is small enough to whittle and do intricate things but big enough to split your fire wood.

Fixed it for you, Tiny.

I really don't have thick fingers, just a wide hand. My right hand is wider than my left. The tweeners actually fit my left hand okay.

A murse is a MANLY purse, tool box, field bag, etc....... Working on a really cool design that will edc your tablet, pistole, and other basics.....First aid, bankline, Vaseline......Watch this space........Started with a Canadian Army surplus WWI medic bag that I used to use caving.......This one will be good on the airplane (the proto has been to Vegas and Argentina and doubled as my field bag in Gaucho Land......A mini dispatch case with additions to make it as versatile as a BK 2..... Well, almost.......

Another recommendation for the 16. A 4-5" blade on a 4.5" handle fills the bill nicely.
I don't do a lot of bushcrafting, but it makes great fuzz sticks and marshmallow sticks, and batons firewood easily.
I haven't tried the 14, but found the Izula a little small - though with micarta scales, I likes its 3-finger grip better than that of the ESEE 3. (Didn't buy either.)

Does anybody with normal large hands have an in-hand shot of a 16?

Doc
I have fairly normal large hands - XL gloves. Mine has custom, oversize scales.

I may have to look into getting a "murse"...have to carry all kinds of crap at work...files..a stone..phone..tape..tools. Now, if I could strap it down so that it doesn't bounce around when i have to take off like a bat outta hell when the tree I'm cutting falls, it'd be great. Thanks Mr.E!
