after reading the thread about the fixed blade native, i was wondering what you guys thought of a larger version of the native? the native is awesome, what about giving it an endura sized big brother?

A few years ago, there was a large Native prototype called the Chief, but I guess sal decided not to pursue it. I have no idea why not. I kind of like the idea myself. I guess the problem is that Spydernuts always want some new knife, and then they never seem to buy them in the numbers Sal expects.

I remember the chief. I think a large native would canniblize there own large folder market. Ie lil temp, manix, chinook.

While I am really hot for a FB Native, I don't know about a larger Native. Anyone got any links to pics of the Chief?

that native chief sounds pretty cool. it would make an awesome SD knife with that spear shaped blade.

Here ya go:

I'd like to see it produced as well.

WOW!!!! look at that thing! thats awesome! thanks for the pic. i was thinking keeping it with frn handles, but damn that g10 looks great on that knife. damn, i hope sal releases some of those or something similar some time in the future.

Thats exactly what I've been looking for! A larger spearpoint spydie with a nice choil would sell like hotcakes in my opinion.

catamount123, thanks for that pic. I would definitely like to get one or two or three of those.

I lobbied hard for a larger Native, and then Spyderco came up with the Chinook II (hollowground) and I forgot about it.

I could get interested again, but, as long as I have my Chinook II (hollowground), I don't need a larger Native.

It is somehow surprising how various great Spyderco models died in the prototype stage. :( I always said the Native Chief would sell like hot cakes myself. I guess legal length limitation has something to do with Spyderco's decision to abandon it :(

I really can't see what a larger Native would offer that the Mini-Manix, Manix, and Chinook III don't already offer.

.....blade shape....perhaps weight too. Dunno for sure...just thinking out loud. I do like the looks of that Chief an awful lot.

- regards to all !

The Native Chief provides more self-defense point.

The Chinook has as much point, but it doesn't appear so to most observers.

Both the Chinook and the Native Chief have more point than the Manix.

Yes, I know the Manix has a point, but not as acute a point as either the Native Chief nor the Chinook.

If one put a swedge on the Manix blade, gave the blade a higher aspect ratio, and raised the point so that it didn't drop so far below the center line of the grip, he would have a Native Chief.

I don't care for the Manix because it doesn't have enough point.

Put some point on the Manix, make the blade profile leaner, and raise the point in reference to the center line of the grip, and I'll buy it.

The Chinook has both point and belly...lots of point and belly.

The point intersects the center line of the grip, and I think the blade of the Chinook has a longer edge, by virtue of its long belly, than almost any other Spyderco knife.

=====

I just searched Spyderco's site for a Chinook and didn't find it listed.
Has Spyderco discontinued the Chinook?

Unbelievable.

I consider the Chinook II (hollowground) the finest all around, self-defense folder ever offered to the American public, at any price.
