A BK15 and diamond files....looks like I'm doing a complete makeover :)

Ya know, GSOM, that some people pay extra for special jimping like that.

Maybe in your retirement years you can have a company called "Drunken Monkey Jimping Company". :D:D

Pimp my..... I mean jimp my knife!

Good work, Granite! I couldn't do anything half as good in any mental state

Thanks, everyone. I think the alcohol was really only necessary to lower my inhibition enough to take a file to a perfectly good knife. Doesn't hurt that I have a couple of 15's. I don't think I'll be trying this with my Brute ;).

So you inspired me to get a little buzzed and give it a shot. I started on some old carbon no name butchers...

Got better by my third try...

So I drew out a pattern on my 14 and decided to give it a go!

Then I chickened out. Thank goodness I realized I was sitting on the couch in my drawers filing these things and I should wait until I get out in the shed with a proper vise, rulers, etc and get it right lol.
Thanks for this thread! Got me doing something I never tried yet!

Horribly, I'd bet...I don't eff with everclear. That stuff is practically a hallucinogen.....a little drunk is one thing; visiting another planet and trying to work through a tear in the space time continuum is another ;).

I think that's when good ideas turn into filed fingers instead lmao

Well....couldn't just let it be. Plus since I kinda hafta put new scales on it, I figured I'd try a little sober filework (still totally freehand) on the belly of the handle. Went for a different pattern this time with a small rat tail, half round and triangular diamond files.

Starting off:

and the finish....hard to get a good pic with the cell, so I sharpied it and cleaned up the lands with 220 W/D:

I think the alcohol was good for getting me over myself and taking a file to it, but sober monkey outhinks drunken monkey every time....or maybe not - they're comparable, I guess. Still happy with it, and will post some more pics as the project progresses.

"Freehand Drunken Filework"... Wasn't that a Lynyrd Skynyrd song?

The knife looks pretty awesome. It looks hieroglyphic or like "Predator" (the movie) alphabet or something. Very cool.

I wish I could do stuff like that. Getting 'em dirty is about as custom as I get. :D

Ha! Well, I was kinda...Flirtin' With Disaster....
Thanks, Mrs.C. I bet you could do something like that - with the right tools - and attitude....'course it'd prolly look different.
But hey, gettin' 'em dirty is a fun way to customize a Becker. Every natural patina has a story to tell, too.

Cut down some katalox and convexed ti the best I could...it's already pretty thin behind the edge as it is. Sitting in a bath of stripper, along with my other non-stripped 15 and my 10.

Before, with the block of katalox:

Convexed....the edge looks wicked thin, but I ain't going to put the final on it until I've epoxied and shaped the scales. The edge is already screaming "SHARP! Use EXTREME Caution!"...

Ahhh, this is getting good! Looks like ya hit the swedge a bit. I've thought about how it would look with that edge softened into the grind. I bet it'd look great

Awesome stuff as always GSOM. I liked your drunken file work, but I reeeeally love your sober stuff :)

And whatch yer plans for that 10??

Thanks! I wuz tryin' not ta hit the swedge....difficult to convex on the 2x42 (slack belt) without hitting it a little, tho.

Thank you as well. 10 plans are to use, sharpen, repeat.....I'm not sure I have enough time in my life to do all the projects I'd like. The 10 works pretty great outta the box....but I tend to like mine uncoated - because I really need MORE knives to maintain in my saltwater environment. Tried to keep the coating under the scales on the 10; the fileworked 15 is gonna get permanent scales, and the other 15 is going to get some rubber liners under the stock scales. I have a third 15 with shower pan liner under the scales (was just using it for dinner) and so far, those liners seem to be keeping the moisture (and rust) from creeping under the scales.

I'm trying to find a thin piece of maple to use as a "liner" under the katalox....will post some more pics when I get more done!

if that's knife abuse, you got lucky :D i like it.

Mike this is freakin fantastic man! Love how it snowballed from "Hehe I'm gon' <hic> file this here <hic> BK somethin'" all the way to stripping it, making new scales and working out a way to show off the new work. This is bloody cool bro! I'm really looking forward to seeing how you accentuate that file work. The black epoxy: will that still end up being sort of clear but with a tinted tinge to it?

Thanks mate! Yah....it's turning into a project all right....there are always consequences to alcohol fueled undertakings - sometimes they're good ones, tho!
I'm hoping the epoxy infill will be opaque black...I have some leftover black Micarta dust (that I saved for some unknown ('k, maybe I'm a packrat) reason) from another project (re-handled a CS Trailmaster, can be found in the BH making & mod thread) and will be mixing that with the epoxy. Last time I did it it was pretty black. I'll try to get some more pics up tonight, but the scales are katalox - which is very dark purplish brown - with a thin layer of maple that will sit against the steel, kinda like a liner. Should make the black pop quite nicely....but there's no tellin' how it'll actually look 'til it's done.

Epoxy is cured, sanded the maple a little....this should at least give you an idea:

Gonna pin the scales on, probably with stainless. Lots of work left to do....

This is a very inspiring thread. I love file work like that but would never attempt to do it myself. But I figure that if you can do that whilst on a drunken binge, perhaps I, buzzed on coffee, can do a reasonable facsimile:D.

I bet you could. Besides....some of it was done sober...
