A Bob Ham engraved folder

RAY, I draw the lines where I want to inlay gold first. Second, I cut the lines and undercut the edges to form a dovetail. Next, I forge/hammer 24ct. gold into these lines. This leaves a hammered distorted mound of gold above the line or figure inlayed. The remaining gold is then polished down by hand using 400/600/etc. grit paper until flush with steel surface. Glad you like it Ray --- I sent you another picture this morning that is of better quality showing much more detail.

Ken, I don't think I could find enough patience to even start to learn engraving. Is the gold work done after the other engraving is completed?

Ray, I always plan out ahead of a project by designing what the client is looking for on the given piece be it knife or gun. When gold is required, I draw this in first and design the scroll work next. My first step is to cut out & inlay the gold followed by polishing gold flush with surface and engraving scroll work. Perhaps I'll do some gold work on that blade you are sending me.
