Only kind of : ) My son is now 6. He actually got his first knife around 4 and have went through various stages of what he was allowed to do with it. Now, he is pretty good at using one, and actually wear one quite a bit.

He originally stole my Bark River Classic Hunter. Being an appropriate size for him, I didn’t have too many complaints. But, I also wanted more of a “beater” for him, and got a Mora 511. I chose the 511 because of the generous guard and the smaller handle size. Here he is a while ago with his "collection."

I had the idea a while ago that it would be cool if a company made a knife called “A Boy’s First Knife.” Something that was appropriately sized for younger hands and something that was a bit more “special” to give to your son. Well, now that I make knives, I can do whatever I want, and that is exactly what I did : )

So, I got out all the knives that he currently owns, and a few of mine. We tried to draw out what he wanted. I shaped and made the handle to his own hand size.

Here is our planning session.

When searching for handle materials, he originally wanted “blue.” We went online shopping for handles and when he saw orange and black G10, he thought it was cool because it looked like a tiger. So, that was it, and here is what we came up with.

The thing is one mean slicer too. When done with it I made super fine curls out of post it notes, made some mean fuzz sticks, and shave the hair off my arm. Of course the wife says “does he really need a knife that sharp.” And my reply is “absolutely.”

very cool brian.. that's a great looking little knife... i bet he's loving it...:D

Brian,

I think that is a great design for a youngster's first blade, and I congratulate you on taking the time to work with your son to develop it and the concept! He certainly looks pleased!

(Since my own first knife was a Girl Scout folder...way, way back in time...I would love to see you offer "A Girl's First Knife," too! :D)

Seriously nice work!

Brian, I know exactly the satisfaction this whole thing is giving you, as my own son made his first a year or so ago, 01 tool steel and blue stabilized maple, I love kids and seeing them getting involved in the trade, especially with father son projects!!!

Tell ya what if he still wants blue, let me know, I have another set of blue stabilized maple, that he can have.....not you but him, if he wants them. Just pay shipping, maybe like 5-6 bucks for the ship, and there yours .....if he still wants blue.

great stuff, and take care

Looks damn good Brian:thumbup: The fit of the scales look fantastic:eek: I hope you bring it by tomorrow.

Nick:)

That is a seriously beautiful and elegant knife! What a great bunch of memories you two will have as he uses it.

Not to take anything away from the design, but would a young child's knife be a touch safer if it wasn't so pointy at the tip? It also might hold up a bit better if it's more blunt like a keppy or a nessmuk in the hands of a youngster. Your son might have the skills and maturity to work carefully, but others might not.

This is if you plan on marketing them to kiddos. If not, please disregard my comments above. I completely agree with you about the sharpness though.

Excellent work man, that's a really handsome knife (and certainly would be a hell of a first one for a kid to own!).

Nice work Brian, …that looks great.

I bet that would also work well for a person like my wife who has very small hands.

Brian,

Great project, beautiful design. I am sure your son is proud to have a dad like you.

I have a similar project on my bench for my 10 year old son. (So little time) I intend to put a small stainless gaurd on his with the intention of grinding it down once he has proven to me that he is safe with it. (should be when he is around 30 years old)

My design is very close to yours and I hope I can execute 75-80% of your perfection.

Back to the topic. Beautiful work! Enjoy spending time with your son outdoors making life changing memories.
