I've spent quite alot of time reviewing and downloading the pictures posted of the Blade show and while doing so, I came to a sad realization. :o

I will no longer describe myself as a "collector", I'm not. I'm only a hoarder/accumulator that just happens to have a bunch of Buck knives. The real collectors are those great guys who spend untold hours building and researching their fantastic displays and presenting them to the public at the shows! I won't even try to name them all, their names and pictures have already been posted, so I'll just say "Way to go guys (and gals)!!!

They are the real collectors and until I put together something to display, maybe for Pasadena next year, I'll just consider myself a guy with a bunch of knives.

Thank you to all the real collectors for their fine displays and the effort that went into them.:thumbup:

I collect knives that are great deals and will bring a good profit when they are eventually sold.

Strangely enough, these are always beautiful knives.

Even my working knives are nice.

I got this one for around $43, I think.

I'm a collector of beautiful bargains, if we really need a category.

:D

I got these at a discount and with a free Buck anvil that now sells on the bay for around $30.

Although I don't usually buy things that way.....I suspect I or my heirs will come out ok on that deal.

Yes, I'm a Buck Collector.

:D

I was thinking the same thing when I saw all those fantastic collections. But your collection, Plumberdv, must be a treasure chest compared to mine. I guess I'm just a guy who likes to use a good knife. Almost all of my knives fall into the user, backup and potential user category, with only a few real "lookers".

Dave,
It's a tough call and one that I haven't been able to make. I was going to get into stag stuff, but wasn't disciplined enough to do that. Then, was going to do years that meant things to my family, again, fail since I chase the new stuff all the time.

In then end, like me with firearms. I am an accumulator. I really respect those who collect, but I am not one of them. Just not in my make up. I have slowed in my Buck buying and am now good with the fact that I am not going to be a collector (of anything). I'm good with that though. I love the Bucks I have and look forward to more!

I agree with ya Dave! I am more of an accumulator that, like wolfdog, likes to use a nice knife! I probably only need one Buck, but I love all the different variations! ;)

:thumbup:Plus one there postfallsidaho. I like to have fun seeing what I can find at times and accmulate it if I can. HL  :)

Chickentrax needs to be here for this one...

He says we aren't collectors unless we have a "THEME"

Well then, I proclaim that I AM a COLLECTOR!!!

My collection theme is "ECLECTIC" :p :D

Here is a personal test.

If you are able do this in your home situation, fix up a small display frame, cabinet, wall hanger etc. Pick a few knives to put in said "display".

Watch display when you have a few seconds, now and then when sitting or passing by. If you start thinking about changing, re-arranging or getting a new one to add, you have the genetic code to become a collector. Maybe not as bad as some Blade Show displayers but you will need to control your urges. You may need to join a group called the BCCI, whose members will help you channel your urges to a positive outcome.

If you care less and don't even look at it for days at a time. Then you can go about your life, using a few and getting another when the need arises.

To you re-arrangers, welcome aboard......I feel your pain...300

I'm not saying that I don't have the makings of several nice collections, I do. I have everything from early 110's and fixed blades to tons of Le's, Customs and some of the less often seen production knives. I've just decided that I won't call myself a true collector until I start sharing them in display's at some shows.

I also love to use knives, the problem is that at this point in my life, about the toughest thing I do requiring a knife is to open a shipping box containing more new knives! I never even need to whittle tent stakes (see my "tent below") when camping or need to baton anything for firewood. I pick my firewood up at a stand on the way to the campground, all cut to size and bundled up very neatly!

I don't consider and never did, my "accumulection" an investment. It's strictly a hobby and I really don't give a rat's patoot if they go up in value or not. I'm sure that at some point in the future, my son (who doesn't share the passion for them) will be trying to sell them off. Whatever he gets for them will be pure PROFIT for him and MY profit will have been the pure enjoyment of owning them. I know that if I wasn't buying knives, I'd be spending the money on something else and there are many hobbies that leave nothing material at all behind when the hobbiest passes on. I keep my investing and my hobbies separate and never confuse the two.

I'm not a collector, just a guy that snags a cool one now and then.Dave you have the coolest accumulation of Buck knives I've ever seen!:D:thumbup::thumbup:

I'm very disciplined in my knife purchases my wife uses the term 'tight-wad'. I usually buy knives in 3 catgories: one any Buck from 1963- 1983 (3dots and 4), two the early year dates for off spring to inherit (since I have girls I may someday have grandkids) and third are just for gifts mostly for friends(folks that do us favors) or family its in this catagory that I'll purchase to support the club. Even though catgory 2&3 may see more traffic yearly, thats just the trend and the older ones are harder to find and I'm close to satisfying catorgy 1. This is just me. With that said 'its fine what ever you do' just enjoy it. Also, there are very few shows in the nation that offer awards for displays at some of these Buck will cover the cost of the table which can be $$$. Which also must be museum quality and in some ways to me thats just for a museum. I enjoy displaying for common people who enjoy knives and aren't judges. DM ;)

You crack me up, you spend hours talking about knives, arguing your point, posting your pictures and buying knives. I think you sit at your computer and think of ways to spin the fact that your just board of your collection. You have made several comments leading to what ever the ultimate end it for you. I don't agree that you need to show the world what you have to be a collector. If you want to think that of yourself go ahead. I have direction to my collection and when I get board of that I go in a different direction. I display for myself and I enjoy in private. I show the people I love and don't care if someone has a better collection than I do. My collection is mine and and its sole purpose is to make me a collector. I don't buy knives I don't like or want. That's what horders do. Speak for your self.
