A "collector"??????

You know what Matt, I didn't ask for your opinion on my motives or your take on what constitutes collecting. Awhile back you sent me a pretty ugly PM about staying out of your threads with my opinions and thoughts. I've done that and I'd appreciate it you would return the favor. OK????

Wrote this over in Blade Show Thread.

"Taking a display to a show is a social event, a way to show your interest to others who appreciate your efforts. Even a 3 foot wide display of 20 knives can draw lookers. If there is a good sized knife show in your area, find the other Buck poeple nearby, contact BCCI for advice and spend a day talking and showing your Bucks. Its a whole lot better than mowing the yard.

I appreciate everyones discussion, we all like Buck knives for many and varied reasons. Going to a show or taking a display of your knives is 90 % a social event as I stated. Trophies are OK, but what you really do it for is to stand there in the presence of your fellow Buck guys and gals talking and looking at your knives and at theirs. The prize stuff is just belly button lint.

I may quit displaying and just go to hang out in Bucktown.....hope to try some other shows also. Going to go with David Martin in Feb. and show Las Cruses, NM knife event what Buck people are all about. Heck we even have our own Sheriff.

Nobody asked for your opinion either, Plumberdv.....but you jumped on here with a thread that explicitly downgrades and insults anybody who doesn't set up displays at shows.

And horrors....what an awful thing for anyone to consider a knife as an investment.

And you did manage to mention that you have the makings of several good collections and show us your fancy camper.

And all the people said, "Yawn."

I can't display my Buck knives because they've all been modified to suit my needs. So you could call me a user rather than a collector. I move blades around to different handles. I modify blades to fit Selectors. I add pocket clips and thumb studs. I have custom blades made for factory handles. I have Ti handles anodized. I skinny up factory handles to lighten them. I reprofile factory blades to suit my requirements. I have a lot of Bucks, but not many are original. Different strokes for different folks.

Yea, really the knives open up a venue to visiting with some good people. I think I'll chill out and talk knives. DM

Dave if your going to send me a PM that says the same thing as you post on the forum, I prefer to only read your nonsense once. But if this is your childish way to get people involved in your drama again, I go back to my opinion that your just board. You should try your hand a needle Point, They have edges too. I only disagree with your post on your opinion of what a collector was... You posted it, I only responded. If you want to talk and with out any response, dont post it on a conversation forum, talk to a tree, they are good listeners...

Well, I lost my DSL early last evening so I just went to bed, watched TV and worked on my needle point (another great hobby by the way) until I got BORED with that and went to sleep.

As an aside, I heard a rumor that Buck is coming out with a line of needles; Pro, Avid and Select. The Pro made with S30V, the Avid in one of the Sandvick materials and of course plain 420HC. I can't wait to get my hands on some of the Pro's so I can post a review!

I make a lousy collector. Every time I get a new Custom 110 that I figure that I'll keep pristine, I'll end up using it. Old 112's - used. New 112's - used. Bone handle 110 - used.

So, I am officially not a collector, but I do admire those who are.

Dave I trully admire the people that take the time to do the research on their knives, and make thier displays museum quality. I know that is not what I will do, I collect the knives that I like, and when I find out information that someone else has taken the time to find will thank them for it, and file it away. You might say we are back in school, isn't it why we had teachers to teach us on various subjects, then question them when we felt they or the books where wrong. Just think of this as one big class room, and remember you probabley did not get along with every one when you where in school, but we may learn something from everyone. Just my two cents worth. HL

I stayed up a little late last night, since I did not have to get up early this morning. I hav a hard time going to sleep after reading this thread. If this had been the 1st time I had got on here and read this forum, it probably would have been my last. I have throughly enjoyed ALL the comments from everyone that has written something, or answered a question I, or someone else had. Since DNA has proved no 2 people are alike we are going to have different reasons for purchasing an item, in this case(no pun intended) it is Buck knives. I really feel that we should keep all our personal negative comments to PM messages. We might not agree with something someone else states, and if it is about knives there is room for discussion. If it is a personal issue please use PM messages. We are all here to enjoy, and discuss knives, and to help newcomers become more involved in the knife hobby. I really hope no one gets upset with this message because it is not to disrespect anyone. I just want to learn as much from each member as possible. Hope each and everyone has a good evening, and a great Fathers Day Sunday. Might even be the best Sunday knife show ever. And it's sure HOT here in East Texas.

Yes David it sure does, just about everyone either has owned a Buck knife or has memories of a loved one or friend that chierished one.

Yes, I too will be in the market for these (as will most collectors). I suspect not many will be sold and they'll turn out to be highly collectible and a great investment. I'm hoping they eventually do some buildouts in stag. I continue to wonder why we can't get a real premium steel offered.....like BG-42!!

Do you know if these needles will be stamped or laser engraved?

:)

Yes, please realize for the most part we're good natured and better than other forums. But sometimes it gets down right embarressing. DM ;(

I've spent quite alot of time reviewing and downloading the pictures posted of the Blade show and while doing so, I came to a sad realization. :o

I will no longer describe myself as a "collector", I'm not. I'm only a hoarder/accumulator that just happens to have a bunch of Buck knives. The real collectors are those great guys who spend untold hours building and researching their fantastic displays and presenting them to the public at the shows! I won't even try to name them all, their names and pictures have already been posted, so I'll just say "Way to go guys (and gals)!!!

They are the real collectors and until I put together something to display, maybe for Pasadena next year, I'll just consider myself a guy with a bunch of knives.

Thank you to all the real collectors for their fine displays and the effort that went into them.:thumbup:

+1

PBD, I know just what you are saying (not many will understand). I came to the realization years ago, that according to the "knife show collector standards" of a real collection/collector, that I to am also just an accumulator. There are some old threads on this same issue (way back 05-06 time frame). I'm somewhat like you Dave, I have more than just a few Buck knives. But, I'm just not a disciplined kind of guy and buy what I like (not collector standards). My knives are just for me, I share photo's of them with folks here and what little knowledge I have picked up in the last few years.

What I am saying is that there are displaying rules set by those who are the current leaders in this arena. If one wants to follow the current leaders (they are very good award winning folks) you must follow their current trends. The display I had in mind to build and take to a show, by the current leaders mind set would just be a bunch of knives in a box/cabinet, with no clear direction or theme (I'm an artistic type who likes eye candy). So, I just decided to keep my accumulation to myself and show some photo's to folks who may like what I see in them. The cost for me to build a display and go to a show is better spent in the accumulation a few more knives. Enough said on this collecting/public displaying topic from me.

You know what they say about opinions Dave......and everyone has one, some are just bigger than others;). To me if I have more than one of the same thing it's a collection (just my opinion). I have fun with my accumulation/collection and that's all that matters to me. Enjoy life as it's to short as it is, if playing with Buck knives is fun for you that do it as often as you can.....I do!
