A confession.

I have a confession to make. I’ve been carrying a small fixed blade lately. And I think it might kick the folder out of my pocket. Not having to fish it out of a pocket, never having to worry about lock strength, it’s just a piece of steel with two handle slabs riveted on nothing to go wrong.

In my line of work, choice of friends and environment I don’t really have to deal with the sheepy types freaking out over it. Sheath knives are common place (I talking about you dude who strapped a kabar to his ape hangers). I can’t think of a ton of downsides, especially when paired with a SAK I think the small fixed blade might be a better option for me over a folder.

Anyone go this route?

Dear smith, you made many, many folding knives,
I realize, of course, that it's no shame to be foldable.
But it's no great honor either!
So, what would have been so terrible if I had been a fixed blade?

If I were a fixed blade,
Shivy divvy divvy divvy divy divvy divvy dum.
All day long I'd cut chop and baton.
If I were a full tang blade.
I'd have no fear to work hard.
Shivy divvy divvy divvy divy divvy divvy dum..

If I were a bitty bitty fixed,
Never folding never idle blade.

I'd build a big bonfire with logs by the dozen,
Split down the middle every one.
A fine steel wedge with sleek handles to adore.
There would be one long liner just going up,
And one even longer coming down
And one mosaic pin, as well, just for show.

I'd fill my pockets with keys and coins and bills and cards,
For my own EDC loadout to use.
Rustling just as noisily as they can.
And each loud "jingle" and "jangle" and "clink" and "clack"
Would land like a cymbal like on the ear,
As if to say "Here lives no folding knife."

If I were a fixed blade,
Shivy divvy divvy divvy divy divvy divvy dum.
All day long I'd cut chop and baton.
If I were a full tang blade.
I'd have no fear to work hard.
Shivy divvy divvy divvy divy divvy divvy dum.
If I were a bitty bitty fixed,
Never folding never idle blade.

I'd see my boss, my owner, use me like a useful tool
With a proper grip and care.
Breaking up hard woods to heart's delight.
I'd see him cutting stuff up and conquering obstacles.
Oh, what a helpful mood he's in.
Separating matter, day and night.

The most important tasks in life would rely on me!
They would ask me to slice through,
Like a skilled blade in action.
"If you please, trusty knife..."
"Pardon me, handy knife..."
Solving problems that call for a sharp stout blade!

And it won't make one bit of difference if I'm stainless or carbon.
When you're practical, they know you're good to go!

Maker who crafted the blade and the handle,
You designed me to be what I am.
Would it spoil some vast eternal plan?
If I were a fixed blade knife?

I once carried a small fixed blade with me while hiking. Pulled out the knife to use, laid the sheath down and later accidentally kicked it off into the swift moving water. Ooof!
Don’t feel badly. First outting with her new HDFK with ecam scales and it got dropped down some rocks and into the bottom of some pretty serious waterfalls. (About 10 ft out from the danger zone). Couldn’t see a thing because of the turbulent water.
Yup. Jumped in fully clothed cause I was gonna find that sucker.
Actually had some bystanders ask if they should call the rangers cause they thought I fell in. Haha.

Happy ending! Found it about an hour later and freezing cold. She now guards her HDFK fiercely. :)

Edit: photo for good measure.

The HDFK is my favorite CPK and I imagine that I would be doing the same thing if I was in your boat. Especially with what one of them costs nowadays.

I’ve been looking for one to add to the rotation. I don’t think it has any chance of eliminating folders from my carry but I do like a small fixed blade.

The sheath is the real hang-up. I don’t like having things on my belt. Ideally I’d like one with a deep carry sheath, leaving around an inch of the handle sticking out of the pocket.

Occasionally I carry a Guardian 3 in my front pocket with an UltiClip. It doesn't chew up my pockets like my folders do.
