A confession.

I carry a small fixed blade when hiking (and on occasion otherwise), and I've noticed that whenever I do, I always end up reaching for it exclusively and the folder tends to stay in my pocket.

I have a CRKT Minimalist in D2 that is around my rearview mirror in my car so when I forget a knife it's always there to slide right into my pocket.

I’ve been looking for one to add to the rotation. I don’t think it has any chance of eliminating folders from my carry but I do like a small fixed blade.

The sheath is the real hang-up. I don’t like having things on my belt. Ideally I’d like one with a deep carry sheath, leaving around an inch of the handle sticking out of the pocket.
Ulti-clips and Mummert clips really offer a lot of carry options.

I have a confession to make. I’ve been carrying a small fixed blade lately. And I think it might kick the folder out of my pocket. Not having to fish it out of a pocket, never having to worry about lock strength, it’s just a piece of steel with two handle slabs riveted on nothing to go wrong.

In my line of work, choice of friends and environment I don’t really have to deal with the sheepy types freaking out over it. Sheath knives are common place (I talking about you dude who strapped a kabar to his ape hangers). I can’t think of a ton of downsides, especially when paired with a SAK I think the small fixed blade might be a better option for me over a folder.

Anyone go this route?
I always carry a fixed blade if I have that choice. Especially if I can carry it horizontally on my belt. Less stuff in my pockets is always a plus.

Once you get used to carrying a fixed blade, it's tough to go back. YMMV

There are talented leather & kydex crafters who post in the "Sheaths & Such" forum here on BF. Easy to touch bases with one of them, depending on your material of choice, to get a sheath/slip fabricated that is tailored to your needs or desires.

I am a fairly recent convert, myself. I carry both a fixed blade and at least one folder where it's permitted to do so.
Fixed blades are less fussy and tend to age better than folders; what with the lack of moving parts and all that.

What is this?

Due to idiotic local knife laws it makes more sense for me to carry a fixed blade. So that's what I do. Perhaps also a slip joint or SAK at times.
