A couple of equipment questions

Please explain further. I use my 2X72 to do all handle work except the very final finishing which I do by hand. Frank

edited my last post. I can't get the swells in the handle or say a choil when cleaning the outline on a 2x42

For inside curves a spindle sander or as Frank uses a router with a table. You can rough it in with a dremel or I've used a die grinder with those abrasive drums and then finish by hand with paper.

I would kind of like to see some pictures of the router set up and a die grinder.......... The dremel is a good idea but what would be a good head for the dremel?

I have that HF bandsaw as well. Paid something like $80 for it and it has cut quite a bit of high carbon and some CPM 154. Like others have said, get good bimetal blades. I have a short piece of landscaping timber clamped vertical in my Workmate with this saw zip tied to that. Just the right height for me.

I've been using 3/4" sanding drums chucked up in my drill press for sanding curves. You can get a little kit at Lowes or Ace Hardware for around ten bucks. I have 50,80 and 120 grit drums and then finish sanding by hand. Sure makes a lot of difference! Before that, I got it as smooth as I could with files and then went to sandpaper.

Mudbug, thats a good idea. I was using files and going to try dowls with sand paper on them but the sanding drums is a better idea in my opinion.

Routers and knife work should not be mixed. Routers are made for a very differnt use. The only use I could imagine would be to trim scales to shape with a template. Using one to shape a semi-finished knife is just plain asking for a trip to the hand surgeon...or ER.

I read a lot of different threads with many comments on Craftsman machines. Blades for their saws are not always available on line and availability at stores sounds like it is questionable sometimes. Have you seen the Trajan line of saws? Visit this site www.utilitybandsaw.com for your band saw machine selection.

I posted this in another thread yesterday....................

Hard to beat this for the price.............

I found one of these at a flea market and wound up getting it for under $100 with some sleeves and belts included. My wife rolled her eyes but buying it was a no-brainer for me

As far as the metal-cutting bandsaw goes many people on here have suggested some sort of portaband with, either, something homemade or a SWAG table to stand it up. Many seem to like the cheap HF versions (not me........... nor am I as big a Craftsman fan as I used to be). I have a Milwaukee 6236 that I bought on Craigslist that is like the Energizer bunny, it just keeps running (spent $80 on it with several Olsen bi-metal blade included as I recall), replaced the cut electric cord and tuned it up and never looked back )
