A CRACK? There's a mysterious line on my new HI khukui

Saw picture and not sure it is crack or scratch mark.
Send it back and let me check and
if I find the blade is heat treat/defect then I will send you a replacement.

I've scrutinized the picture and I can't tell for absolutely sure.
Only way to properly tell is to use magnification and have it on hand.

I polished the surface flat and smooth, blemish still there. I think I will keep using it, if it worsens then I will send it in.

Since Yangdu has handled more khukuris than all of the rest of us combined, I wouldn't take the chance. If that fails catastrophically in use, that's going to be a big, ugly piece of shrapnel.

I wouldn't use it. Send it to auntie, and let her decide with her expertise. I'd rather err on the side of caution, rather than take a chance with a big piece of sharp steel.

Sigh... Well I guess I have to make a mail run this week

I know it's a bummer, but it really is a good idea. Stuff happens. Better to let Yangdu make sure the blade is safe to use. It really is a win/win. You either get a new knife or the most scrutinizing hawk-eye put on the blade.

I agree. I am just the least patient person and have been looking forward to using the khukuri on a weekend trip coming up, instead I get to go on my trip with my new favorite toy in Nevada :/ . I guess my e-nep will be playing double duty for a little bit.

I dont think that is from hardening. The tip of the knife is rather soft unlike the working portion of the blade. One may never know where the crack came from with out destructive testing. I doubt it would fail on you being a longitudinal fracture but if it were mine id send it back for replacement. It definitely looks like a structural defect in the original material. That is a very rare defect and no doubt HI would make it good for you. Thats a first of that kind for me.

May I ask who will pay for the return shipping in this case?

That is a very odd place to have a crack. The most recent photo is much clearer. I know its a bummer but Auntie will take care of you.

Definitely send it back to be sure, from the orientation it might be a cold shut from forging the tip. Hard tellin' not holdin' it.

That just means you should buy another to always have a backup! :D

If it was mine I'd pay. It's the right thing to do. If it's defective and seeing that one picture very clear I think it is, auntie would probably cover it if asked but again I wouldn't ask.

I'd pay to return, if defective, you can ask auntie to pick up shipping. Auntie is quite accommodating, just politely inquire about shipping costs to/fro.

I like the tale of the mysterious CRACK... I'm looking forward to see how it ends.

Tell Ya what, if you're OK with it being a little used, I'll dig one out my personal stash so you don't go on your trip nekid.

No cost, no strings. I just don't like to see people bummed out when I can help it. I would feel the same way if I had a trip coming up.

If you're interested, shoot me a PM:)
