Well, I have reached a low point in my knife exploration journey. Since my financial situation has changed, and my passion for knives hasn't, I purchased two clones.

I won't say which clones of which knives, but sufficed to say that they are "higher quality" clones. One clone is based off of a custom knife that typically sells for around $2000, and the other clone is based off of a discontinued knife that can only be found on the secondary market for much more money than it is actually worth.

I am excited, disappointed, anxious (to see how clones stand up against authentic knives), and embarrassed for having to stoop to plagiarism in order to get a taste of what I truly wanted.

Firstly and most importantly-
I'm very sorry for the change in your financial position mate-my heart goes out to you.

Regarding clones/your purchase of clones-I suppose you have your reasons mate-but I hope should your "financial position improve"-I hope you get to fulfill your knife goals, and get the authentic versions of your recent clone purchases and then quickly destroy the clones instead of selling it on the open market to keep someone from trying to sell them as originals.

That's your prerogative, but not being able to afford something doesn't justify buying rip offs, IMO. There are plenty of things above my pay grade, but that's life. The rip offs won't satisfy the want for the real things, but what you paid for them put you that much farther away from getting the real thing.

Refocus and look at knives like the traditional folders and modern fixed blades. They cost less than modern folders.

Any money spent on fakes or clones is pretty well wasted so when it's short that's just fiddling while Rome burns.

We do the best we can with our hobbies when our financial circumstance changes. Hopefully, it is a temporary situation.

Awesome.

My financial situation currently means that I have to take a break from the crazy amounts I was spending per month on knives, but it's temporary.

At no time am I going to buy a "lesser" knife than what I want, and I am certainly not going to get into "clones" because I have an uncontrollable need to satisfy some BS materialistic issues.

Kinda sad that "just buying something" is more important then integrity....

^ I'm really sorry that this happened to you, Mike!

I'm assuming that if there were any hope of being refunded (possibly via a PayPal or a credit card purchase), you would've mentioned this? What if any, was the response, from the person/person's whom sold you these knives? Not that it matters, but by any chance were these knives, custom balisongs?

This type of ugly situation is an important lesson for all member's, to always take heed & pay attention; to both the people they're dealing with, & the fact that this hobby is flooded with clones (both customs & production knives)! It's a mine field out there, & being passionate knife enthusiasts, make us all very all very vulnerable!

I hope that there is some hope, for a possible positive resolution for you, Mike!

Caveat Emptor: BUYER BEWARE!!!

The OP bought these knowing they were clones. You read that, right?

Huh?

He wasn't duped. He intentionally bought them.

Hmm. I can't afford to buy $2000 custom knives either. However I choose not to give my money to scumbags that make clones so I can pretend to be rich.

:thumbdn:

Bladeforums officially discourages dealing in clones. If you're low on funds for new knives, get into a new part of the hobby. Polish your sharpening skills. Work on refurbishing or pimping older knives.

Rules For The Exchange & Discussion Forums - (All Rules Apply Site-Wide)7
http://www.bladeforums.com/forums/announcement.php?f=699&a=98

SECTION 5 - Miscellaneous -

As fakes and homage items are a legal gray area and obviously hurt the hobby, no fake or homage items may be sold on the Exchange. Members may not knowingly sell unlicensed knockoffs or counterfeit versions of knives (or any other goods) based upon the designs of their legitimate owner, manufacturer or custom maker. Additionally, members may not sell any knife or item known or suspected to be other than as described in terms of its lineage and authenticity.

Sorry to hear that your financial situation has changed, but the way I see it if you can't afford it you don't need it. No need to do whatever it takes .

A counterfeit of a 2000$ knife probably wasn't cheap, and for the money you could've gotten a better non counterfeit knife, and you probably just wasted a bunch of money on a knife that you'll never be able to sell.

I Fully Understand...I would be also. Hopefully, your life will soon get better.
BTW, it's only fair to say that some clones are indeed very decent. I do NOT buy them, or support them, but many folks may not know or care about the difference.
I've always found plenty of great knives in ZT's and Spydercos at awfully nice prices, especially when you purchase them from the Exchange...as-new-in-box.

It's bad enough to support clones--though I'm really sorry to hear about you financial hard times.... Aside from that, why post about making this move here? Did you expect support it were you looking condemnation? This thread puzzles me-- what was the OP's intention?

In any case, a Rough Rider, an AUS8 CS, hell, even a kabar fixed blade, could have satisfied a knife buying need w/ breaking the bank or turning to clones... So many legit budget choices... The fakes will always be just that, fakes... And will never really fill the knife nut need...

Again, sorry to hear about the financial problems.
