A Dark Time for my Hobby

Alright, just got back from a hike with my wife and son. Brought my TAD Dauntless MK4, and a Jurgen Schanz custom. Didn't get to use them, but I enjoyed their company.

I have purchased nothing but authentic production, mid-tech, and custom knives ever since I have been a member of BFC. I have supported MANY up and coming custom makers on this forum, and I have bought/sold/traded with many members. My integrity stands regardless of what some of you are saying here.

Arguing about clones was not my intent for this thread, because we all know that it will never stop. I was simply coming clean here as a form of therapy for myself I suppose haha.

Oh and Esav, I am not selling anything, so I am not sure why you posted the rules/regs. I simply opening a conversation about my all time low as a collector/user of knives. I like to hear other peoples thoughts on the controversial subject, and I don't believe that breaks any BFC rules.

These two purchases are really of knives that I want, but that I would never buy. I don't regret it.

Over the years I (like many other members on here) have lost lots of money because of market value fluctuations, and the nature of buying/selling knives. I have paid my dues, literally, to the community. These two clone purchases are merely breaks from the cycle, and an opportunity for me to see a clone in person, and see how they actually stand up to the knives that I have handled and owned.

I don't expect anyone to support my decision, but I know that I am not the only one who has dabbled in a clone or two throughout their journey. Lots of the people who are so quick to judge, have their own problems and faults, so I take it all in stride.

I understand... your trying to fill a need... the need to collect, have something cool. Collectors obviously have a compulsion to collect...it is an addictive need, not unlike other addictions. It is just a more positive one.. I have it bad... in many areas... live music, recording gear, concert recording, and yes knives... the desire to fill a need is great and you are always looking for the next new thing, cool thing etc etc... I learned a long time ago it is better to want than compromise your principals. When buying anything I do my research find what I feel is the best in terms of what I need and save.... I am in the process of saving for a headphone listening system.. in total it will be about 1600$.. sure I could spend much less, but it would mean less to me... knives are no different. Do your research and save. Situations change from good to bad back to good. Understand you will always have the feeling that your knock off are "Less Than". You won't treat them with respect, eventually you will say to yourself, what was I thinking....

I would rather have 5 knives of quality than 500 knock offs...

Patience is a virtue and virtue is a grace. Put together will place a smile on your face...:D

I liked one of the suggestions above... get compulsive about sharpening... you could really go crazy filling that need making sure your angles are correct, mirrored polished etc etc..

In the end for me it is about principal... never feed the knock off market, it just creates more knock offs.....

The OP bought these knowing they were clones. You read that, right?

^ Obviously, I missed that! Thank you for the clarification. I must admit, that this is certainly a major disappointment!

Mike's financial situation must've changed...drastically! The Mike that I've seen around on a couple of the forums, isn't a guy I remember who would ever buy a clone...most likely the reason why, this flew right over my head.

There isn't a knife out there, that I want badly enough (but can't afford) where I'd ever consider buying a clone! Ever!!! I despise everything about clones! :thumbdn:

Edit:

Doesn't matter if the rip offs are 10x the quality of the real thing, they're rip offs, plain and simple. I don't know the OP and am not making judgements about anything other than his decision about buying rip offs. If the hobby is about buying rip offs, perhaps some one should start a forum elsewhere and discuss them elsewhere.

"Clone" is a fancy word for rip off.

^ +1

As I've previously stated: I would never ever buy a clone, much less, ever admit on a public forum, doing so!

Bladeforums officially discourages dealing in clones. If you're low on funds for new knives, get into a new part of the hobby. Polish your sharpening skills. Work on refurbishing or pimping older knives.

Rules For The Exchange & Discussion Forums - (All Rules Apply Site-Wide)7
http://www.bladeforums.com/forums/announcement.php?f=699&a=98

SECTION 5 - Miscellaneous -

As fakes and homage items are a legal gray area and obviously hurt the hobby, no fake or homage items may be sold on the Exchange. Members may not knowingly sell unlicensed knockoffs or counterfeit versions of knives (or any other goods) based upon the designs of their legitimate owner, manufacturer or custom maker. Additionally, members may not sell any knife or item known or suspected to be other than as described in terms of its lineage and authenticity.
This.

When I'm down in cash but need a knife fix I find plenty of great knives that are affordable. Also keeps me humble and appreciative of all knives so I don't turn knife snob.

Here are some inexpensive knives that still satisfied me despite most knives I really like being $100-200.

You're right brother, we have had some dealings in the past, so we have VERY similar taste in knives. Things change. People stay the same.

This thread is like going to a wine-enthusiast forum, and telling everyone about your "all time low of drinking 2 boxes of Franzia a day"...

^ Yes we did! We both had that "Bali Fever," bad! ;)

I'm not in a position to be able to empathize with you (thank goodness); regardless, I know with complete certainty, that I would never purchase a clone!

Just as SonnyDaze (Don) stated earlier: I really hope that your situation improves soon, Mike.

Don't be afraid to open up to a paradigm shift. Until your financial situation improves take a look at other styles and types of knives. I've been collecting since the mid 80's and just recently SAKs have caught my eye. I love spending less than a hundred bucks on a really cool, useful knife. The likely hood that I will have to pry open a helicopter door versus snug up a screw is slim so why not enjoy what you can enjoy. Know your season.

Then later on find that limited talonite Dr. Death from Mr. Mayo!

I still got that Bali fever haha.

Truly sorry about your financial situation.

That being said, I really don't see it as an excuse to promote criminal activity. Wrong is wrong.
But hey, It's your money. Spend it how you want.

I am by no means wealthy. So I am patient and save for however long it takes, to purchase the knives I want.
Knowing my name would be coming up on some makers lists this year. I bought nothing for a year so I could afford the customs I TRULY wanted.

When I was unemployed I was more than happy to have my SOG Vulcan. When I got a job, I went out and got a new Benchmade.

Actually I'm really not sure why you started this thread. Guilt? Shame? Looking for Pity, or Approval?..... You can BS yourself with whatever justification you want, but at the end of the day I hope you realize you traded your honor and integrity for materialistic wants. The sad part is that it wasn't even a need.

It's like buying a fake rolex- who you fooling?

I'm poverty stricken so now I carry a <$100 Military that I actually use. It's nice not babying a $500 knife.

Hey Mike, I'm sorry to hear about your troubles. I get the purchases something new to try and quench the thirst. Hope things look up.

I don't feel a need to tell people something that they would never know in the first place. Must be therapy......

I haven't bought any knife clones that I am aware of. I don't or seldom dabble in the higher priced stuff anyway. I did buy a 1st gen Colt Woodsman that looked a bit too nice for too cheap at a gun show once. After buying and inspecting closely I realized it was a re-blue. Took a loss on that one.

Just name the clones. You're already crapping on the maker by purchasing them, just name them. **** it. You're taking food out of the mouths of their kids. You're in a financial slump and I'm sorry, I hope it gets better for you. But just because you're having issues doesn't mean you should be spending money to "get the feel" of the real thing. Make the wise financial choice and save the money you'd be spending on the fake and show some respect for the original maker.
