A day walk in the bavarian woods *Updated pics*

Fine rambling scenery there Andi. Reminds me of when I had friends in Schwarzwald years ago, you could see Wild Boar at times!
You think you day hike's weather was poor?? After a thaw and a promise of spring, we've just had winter coming back to bite us: 8cm of snow and down to -10c at night in Scandiland. Good job I kept the winter tyres on the car:eek:

Best wishes, Will

Hi Will!

Minus ten degrees and 8 cm new snow at the beginning of Arpil is never good. Wild boars also are in theese woods. Sometimes they take heavy damage in the fields around or on the trees. The hunters try to keep them away, but with low success. Theese guys (wild boars) are extremely intelligent. ;)

Kind regards
Andi

Not so unusual here though, last year there was thick snow still in mid April.....

Wild Boar are very interesting animals, the young are appealing and lively little creatures. The sausages I've eaten made of Boar were very tasty too!

Regards, Will

Hi Will!

As I can remember winter 2005 - 2006 we had snow til mid May  From mid October til mid May... that was a hard winter. I´m sure in Scandinavia the winters are much harder than here in Mid-Europe. Especially because of the long nights. I was in Norway in August 2008 and the long days ... it was hard to sleep.

Wild boars ... the little ones are so nice looking. I´ve already ate wild boar, as some kind of Schweinsbraten (typical bavarian meal). Sausages of wild boar must also be well tasting.

Kind regards
Andi

Not willing to hijack the thread but...speaking about wild boars...plenty of them here, and also a dish of our tradition.
Since it's "wild" taste is sometimes too strong (especially of male boars), it's not a bad idea to leave the meat to "marinate" (not sure if it's the proper term) in wine with carrots and some celery for a day, and then cook it on low fire (kind of stew cooking).
And if you've never tried it...well you should come over here in the hunting season ;)

Nice woods you have there in bayern. I can't wait until the trees are a little greener, my favourite time of the year.
Do you have mostly pine trees in your region? Or are there a lot of Buchen (beech?) as well like here in Switzerland?

Fausto, I know exactly what you mean: Wildschweinpfeffer, no idea what it's called in english. We do it every autumn, with spätzle, red cabbage, apples and chestnuts. Aah, it makes me hungry.
Definitely better on the table than ruining all the corn fields :)

Nothing to be critical of there, beautiful Germany country side and knives; almost reminds me of back home in Tenn!

I was in the National Park "Bayerischer Wald" - Bavarian Forest today. I just made a couple of pics, before the camera accu ran off.

This was on the border to Czech Republic.

Mr. Humppa himself :D (not my best side, though)

It started to rain pretty fast and we had to travel home. My wife and I had a great day in theese woods and a great meal in Czech Republic ;)

This was with me, today (I made the shot when we were back home)

I gonna make a shot of my home-forest when spring is really here and all the tree are shining. I also gonna make some pics from the mainside of the alps (from the german/austrian side)

Kind regards
Andi

Great pictures Andi!

And hey, you kind of look like a buddy of mine who lives just outside Prague.

Great pics Mr. Humppa.
Looks like you have been enjoying your knives and your world, congrats on both. It's always great to see this.

More great pictures, Andi-- and the man himself! :)

You're wooing me to a Serpentine Jack, one picture at a time. (For this, I also hold Wilgoy responsible.) I have not yet decided if that is good or bad. ;)

What is "compact" about your SAK? A quick Google search lists it at 91mm...? I'm just trying to gauge the size of your GEC vs my own "compact" SAK, an 84mm Small Tinker.

Thank you guys! Well, the place is called Bayerischer Wald (in Bavaria) and in the Czech Republic it´s called Böhmerwald. One part is on the german side and the other port is in Czech Republic.

@pertinux: The Vic modell is called "Compact". Like Tinker, Spartan, Climber and so on. It has one blade, scissors, combined bottle-/ canopener, a pen, toothpick and tweezers. Nice Vic.

Over there in the National Park "Bavarian Forest" live Lynx, Wolves, Wisent and a lot of others very seldom animals. I haven´t seen any, but they are there. You can google about that. It´s already a nice place for tourists.

Kind regards
Andi

Thanks Andi. Although my father grew up in Schlesien and lived in Frankfurt for a bit before he emigrated to the U.S., he always felt at home in your corner of Bayern.

@wintermute: I haven´t been in Schlesien til now. Nowadays Schlesien is a part of Poland. But there it should be pretty similar to the woods in Bavaria, as it was told to me. When you have time and money, you should go to Poland and visit Schlesien. But you shouldn´t miss Bavaria, Schwarzwald and the whole alps. I like it really here. But I want to visit the US the next years. The forests there are also very great, as I have seen on pics.

Kind regards
Andi

Hi guys!

As I told and promissed you, I´ll take some pics of that place, when the weather would be nicer than the last time. So I got up early today, took my stuff and walked on. It was already warm at 7:00 o´clock in the morning.

Here we go...

The same entrance to woods like in post #1, but with more spring feeling right now...

My today´s stuff ... Buck 110 and #66 Serpentine Jack

That´s what Carl said about "outdoor-cathedral" ... makes a man feel small and shows the nature at its best

A typical hunters place in Germany

GEC #66 resting on an old timber :)

Where I walked today there´s a swamp in about 600 metres over N.N. A swamp hole... really worked like a mirror in the early morning hours

Buck 110 took some rest
IMG_1410.jpg

Wild boars were there at some night, I think ... for luck I didn´t see some, they have the young ones right now and are very aggressive

Here´s a scene about my hometown and the alps are not to see on the pic... but they are just 60 kilometres away from where I stood...

It was a great morning. Took a little walk for about four hours. I wish I could spend the whole day there... :)

Great pics!...i especially like the hunters stand...in New Zealand, hunting from a stand is considered unethical?...hunting with dogs, spotlighting and poaching are not!!...different part of the world and different ethics i suppose??....lovely country you have there and im sure your knives served you well.....thanks for sharing..........FES

Beautiful pics, the scenery not too much different from here in NE Pennsylvania, probably why so many German settlers came here (including my own family).

Thank you for sharing Andi, I can't wait to get back into the woods...as soon as this semester is over!
