A different tinder idea ?

Having had my matches blow out just as I get them to the tinder on more than one occasion, an idea came into my head.
I wondered how it would work if I fixed some thin pieces of fatwood to the sides of my match using some jute twine, this way the fatwood would catch as soon as my match ignited !
Anyway here are the pics, excuse the clumsy looking first attempt, in future I'll try it with neater cut pieces of fatwood and thinner strands of jute twine( some cotton would probably be even better).

It worked as I had hoped and the fatwood caught straight away, this could now be carried to your tinder bundle or your tinder fetched to the match.

with the match head to the bottom so that the flame burned up, the little bundle continued to burn for around 8-10 mins !!!

Hey pitdog, I didn't see the Mora in the pictures.

Anyway, good idea, but that doesn't look like jute. It looks more like sisal. Are you sure it's jute?

Doc

Good idea, Pit...I would try putting some PJ on the twine...just in case..."be prepared" and all that

It looks like a great idea. Maybe with some wax on the match head and some PJ on the twine it would work after getting wet.

You might be right Doc, whatever it is it burns ok !!!

Nice job, Pit! Don't you wish somebody would come out with matches made out of fatwood?

Could I name it? how about "incidenary device"

Has anyone every realized that most of us are walking incidenary devices?

Since Pit came up with this we could call it, "maka mora fire":p

Hey, can someone eplain what Fatwood is (I know its a wood) like how its better from any other wood. I always hear its awesome for starting fires... Oh and what tree does it come from, or what department store? :D

As I understand it: When trees die standing up, the sap goes down to the lower part of the trunk of the tree (stump). This the wood there becomes saturated with this sap that becomes flammable when it dries.

Someone might explain it better...am just a newb

Basically it is resinous stump wood from a tree that has died quickly(blowdown, lightning, chainsaw).

Here's a good video that explains it better than me.
