A different tinder idea ?

Ah, that ol' Deble Wind!

When I was a kid, we wrapped the stick of Strike-Anywhere matches with a about 10 inches of 3/4" of newspaper just below the head, secured with a bit of tape, and then dipped the head and the newspaper in melted wax. We called them "Super matches."

I've got a bunch of pitchwood sitting in my garage. I'm going to make up a couple using the REI storm matches to see how it works. I like the pj idea on the jute so maybe I'll give that a try to. Thanks for the insperation Pitdog.

Basically it is resinous stump wood from a tree that has died quickly(blowdown, lightning, chainsaw).

Here's a good video that explains it better than me.

That guy doesn't know what the hell he's talking about!

(Before Brian yells at me, it was me.)

Good idea on the fatches (matwood?), pitdog! I found my old box of camping stuff from when I was a little kid recently and had all kinds of random fire making contraptions in there. Luckily, now I have several hundred firesteels to play with instead of just matches and crappy lighters. :)

That's a great idea!

Thanks.

I wonder about maybe shoving the matchstick through one of the infamous cottom ball/pj tinders and doing the same thing? Would save you from tieing the wood to the stick.

It's kind of the same idea as:

Which are just these with a hole drilled in each end and a match inserted.

Then the whole thing is dipped in melted parrafin.

The idea of these is it makes it much easier (because it's bigger-easier to hold on to) to light when you only have gross motor skills available.

I like to take 3 of the large strike anywhere matches, wrap them is a strip of newspaper, and then throw a clove hitch around the package with jute twine with about 1 inch sticking up (almost like a wick).

Then I dip the whole thing in melted parafin a few times, letting it dry after each dip.

You can light the bundle several ways. Rub off the wax and light a match ad it will start the whole thing. If you have a rough enough surface, you can light the matches as you normally would. The jute "wick" can be roughed up and lit with a firesteel.

After making them I have submerged a few for up 15 min at a time. Dried them off and they light just fine. Whole package should be about the size of a cigarette.

I like pits idea, but I don't have a ready suppy of fatwood. Matchs, jute, newspaper and wax I have lots of.

It has to be the "Pit Stick" IMO. Good idea and easy to make with PSK findings.

I've been using pit stick for quite awhile now. Never thought about trying to light in on fire though. :(
