A follow up POLL to: "Are you over Super Steels"

High Carbon Steel Folders, Is there any interest?

  • An RHK Spanto/Slicer in 52100 or 1095 Steel.

I would buy one, carbon steel isn't as difficult to maintain as people think and takes a super fine edge.

Unless there is something I'm missing, stainless steels can take superfine edges and be ground thin which seems to be a recurring theme in this thread.

The poll is flawed. So if I don't want the two specific high-carbon options my only other choice is vague non high-carbon? All the choices need to be either vague or specific, not a mish mash.

Sorry man, How many knives and options could I list to make everyone happy?!

I picked two very popular knives, and in my second post added that if there was a particular production folder that you would like to see with an HC blade, please leave a comment.

At the end of the day, I picked two folders at very different ends of the spectrum as far as design/style goes. My guess is that if you wouldn't want one of those in an HC steel, you probably aren't that interested in an HC steel folder....

Not trying to pick a fight at all, but I'm an exception to that and many other people are as well. I think M4 is one of the absolute best steels you can put in a folder. Great edge retention and good toughness even when run very hard. I'm also a big fan of Super Blue and I'm very interested in the Hap 40 Delica and Endura coming out. 1095 and 52100, though, just don't have the kind of wear resistance I want and I have no real interest in CRK or Hinderer knives in general.

Note: 52100 doesn't fit my needs, but if it was offered in a simple, inexpensive folder I might be tempted to pick one up as an interesting alternative to AUS8, 8cr13mov and similar.

No vote because M4, 3V and M390 kick butt...

Plain jane carbon steels work just fine however there's a whole new world of stainless and tool steels available.

Eff my wallet I guess. ;):D:cool:

And on that account you would be very wrong. One of my favorites is the Tuff (in my pocket now along with an Esee 4 on my belt).

I would not pay CRK or Hinderer prices for one with a 1095 blade. Sorry, at $400 and up a pop I do expect better materials. That is a major flaw in this poll.

And did you see the part where I said the options should be vague? Of course you can't mention all steels. Like, no need to mention a steel name. That is far too narrow. If you mention a low cost steel (like you have) it makes very little sense considering the value of the brands. Would I buy a 1095 CRK that is priced like it is using 1095? Yes. Is that going to happen? no.

The poll might be a good idea but it needs a little tweaking.

Yup. 1095 in something like the Rat or ESEE folders would be kind of interesting. Still not my thing, but not something I would immediately discount. Particularly if they actually ran the 1095 good and hard.

I have no issue with high carbon steel in folders... what I don't want is high carbon, low alloy steel in higher end folders.

That's why I already own a Gayle Bradley in CPM M4 and an SNG in PD1. ;)

Seriously, I think the poll is an interesting one. It's just missing some higher end carbon steel options to go with the higher end knives. Just as stainless knives have come a long way from 420HC and ATS-34, carbon steels have come a long way from 1095, 52100, and O1.

I think a lot of people taking issue with the poll want to see some 3V, M4, 4V, etc. Put that in a Hinderer or CRK - heck yeah.

Edit - now with pics

The 1095 CRK/RHK knives would still be expensive. It's not all the blade steel that makes these expensive knives.

And that is my point. I am not paying CRK money for inferior materials even if everything else is CRK level. That is why the poll does not make sense. If the steel was M4 or 3v instead of 1095? Different question all together.

I love carbon steel for work, as they take very thin edges, i can dry my knives easily.

For folders, also at work but to open boxes packages and other random stuff, sometimes I'll quickly cut something and clip back without drying, i like that feature for pocket blades, no worrying about rust and wiping dry each time. It's a sebenza, I've never seen it rust, I'll put it in pocket dripping wet at times.

I put the blade of my small 21 in some bleach/water ... 5min tops and it had these little brown bubbles on it while it was submerged they wiped off ,but it left a mark.

Here's some yummy 52100 that I've never had an issue Rusting.

I would buy this all day long. A Seb with 52100. A Seb with 1095 would be badass also.

Yeah I was meaning to agree with you I just phrased it poorly.

I also agree M4 and 3V would be a different conversation all together.

I carry my Gayle Bradley Air very regularly.Great knife knife in an excellent steel.

I was trying to stay away from the powder metallurgy steels.....

I know the answer to an RHK/CRK in 3V and M4.

I can not vote since i do not want a chris reeve folder nor a RHK, whatever that is

My 1095 folders do get dull pretty dang fast.... all GEC, not sure what hardness...
I would prefer if they were 52100 or 3v or something though, something a bit less sword-y
I have a M4 griptilian and that is very nice

i suppose since i now daydream of having an entire set of knives, from tiny slipjoints to large bowies and tantos, made from 1095. all custom-made of course.

I like good high carbon steels in folders and fixed blades. Super Quenched 52100 is tough to beat in many uses too but I've never seen it except in rare customs. More conventionally done 52100 is not as rare and did make it into some Marbles, Bark River and Black Jack knives as well as the first mule in Spyderco's series.

I haven't yet seen it in a folder though I'm sure there are customs floating around somewhere.

As long as alloy steels are included in the umbrella of " carbon steel" I will bring up the Cruwear, Vascowear, PD#1, Z wear, and 3V folders, as well as M2 and M4 HSS.

All are good when done correctly though some people just won't touch non stainless folders or knives in general. They seem to think knives just fall apart when sweated on.
