Damned VA... and congress is trying to cut VA benefits now too

Can you vets out there explain something to me. When my Dad was alive (he died on Christmas Day 2002 - VA paid on his life insurance within two months), he used to say that if worst came to worst healthwise, he could always go to the military's Tripler Hospital in Honolulu for treatment. I always took that to mean that veterans could always get medical care from the VA if they had no funds or insurance. Am I wrong?

I wouldn't characterize the treatment one receives in a VA hospital as "medical care". :barf:

If you were informed that the VA Hospitals were medical care. You need to take a walk through one some time and see what is going on and, I hope you have a strong stomach.

I have told my wife that I would just as soon die at home as in one of those hell holes.

The Congressman referred to in this thread from TX is my favorite congresman. Yvsa, asked me about him once and I told it like it is. Would you believe he voted against the last big pay raise, that is why a bunch of them in D.C. would like to see him defeated in any election but, he has my vote as long as he wants it.:)

Pappy,

Ron Paul often seems the only guy in congress who seems have his head screwed on straight. He appears to be the only one who stands up and asks how the bloody country can stay in business with the national deficit, negative trade balance, and printing money like the Weimar Republic. The rest seem to think A. Greenspan is G*d. He stands up and asks him what the hell is going on here? Don't you guys in Texas ever vote him out!!!!!Our country needs more like him. A lot more.

The VA is very arbitrary. You might get some benefits and you might not. They were acting like I'd never served a day in the military until I got Sen. Harry Reid interested in my predicatment. It took one of his staffers 10 days to get everything settled.

I had never asked the VA for anything until 40 years after service. I guess I'd stayed away so long they forgot about me but the Reid staffer made them dance to the Senator's tune -- and in a hurry.

And the folks are right about the treatment at VA hospitals. It's not good. I'll do the outpatient stuff at the local VA but when the chips are down I head for St. Mary's (against Rusty's strongest advice).

My grandfather seems to have a similarly high view of the VA.
But after taking a bullet through the femur while near Remagen 60 years ago, and still being able to walk today (albeit with new hips and knees), his view might be a little different than some.

This is our chance to do what we were trained to do.......

Always look out for your buddy.

Never leave a wounded buddy behind.

That's what I learned back in the 60s and I still believe it today.

I'll never leave a buddy behind.

Yes "leave no man behind" and I am truly worried for John. I wish he livedin Germany and I could do something for him. What a world,I really hate it. Everything depends on money.

Well wishes from Ferrous!

"--I've felt for a while that the med profession and the auto repair profession are much the same, except for education, modes of dress, and where you work. An operating room can look dirtier than any garage...

My wife had developed and inexplicable case of Hi-blood pressure, but they ran test after test, poked and prodded, spent me $$$, and then came to the conclusion "we dont know what caused it). I had a car that had the same diagnosis, but the $$$ wasnt so bad. And I can get another car.

Umm, yeah. Did you miss the bottom sentence?

Edit: Edited because I came off a little harsh.

Please consider this an overall THANKYOU to all of you who have helped emotionally and financially.

The VA is truly a mess here. I finally found a sympathetic and helpful ear. They are in the process (supposedly) of getting an ID card so I can use their services. Today I received a letter saying that I DID NOT qualify for physical care since I didn't serve for 20 yrs and am not 62. They will however assist in the drugs I was taking just so I could function.

The good news out of this is that I can now walk w/o a cane, but I still face eviction and the process of moving. The doctors won't let me lift anything heavy and insist that I watch every step for 6 months since I tend to overdue it when I feel better.

Even though so many of you have been incredibly generous, I was thinking of auctioning off one of my Indian produced, ivory gripped, officer model kukris at $20 a throw. These are high quality pieces and are a bit on the rare side. If you guys think that is too mercenary of me please say so. I personally think it is, but only cash will keep me from a very unkown future.

Keep at'em, John. I served for 21 months 2 weeks and three days (year in Vietnam). That's not a very long time (seemed like it tho'). I have gotten lotsa care over the years and have just recently been assigned a doctor here in Boise. If you're not service connected, dental and vision is tough to get, but you should be able to get treatment for most anything else. Grit your teeth and don't let'em give you the runaround. Talk to everyone remotely associated with VA. Call your Senator and Congressman. Call the governor's office. I know that tough when you already feel like crap, but has to be done. We're with you.
