A.G. Russell Acies - first impression and pics.

i've been using mine for a few days now. i really like this knife. the clip was the only initial dislike but i've switched it to tip-up and i like it a lot better that way. i can see some areas where the refinement is somewhat beneath the CR standard but the blade shape and steel offset that for me, especially the shape and grind. i love flat grinds and the ZDP has been an awesome performer so far, this is my first use of it. this is my primary EDC now and i have a feeling it will be for some time to come. did i mention i really like this knife?

I'd like to hear your thoughts on what areas don't compare to a CRK. And you say its a flat grind? From mqqn's pictures, it looks to be a hollow grind. I guess photos can be deceiving!

it's really just a matter of detail. when you look at a sebenza, all (ALL) the titanium surface (save the lockbar face) has the same finish. not so the acies. when the lockbar comes down, you can see the rough cut finish on the inside. the blade is not quite, just barely, not quite as well centered. the thumbstuds are sharp. really, that's about it. these are tiny, tiny nits to pick but to compare it to a sebenza requires a discerning eye. i'm still exceptionally pleased with this knife and consider it money well spent. it is smoother and quicker to open or close than the seb and i like the lighter grey titanium they used. it's unlike other framelocks i have and is almost like steel in the way it feels in the hand.

Hi SPXTrader -

I think it is the contour of the grind near the tang that makes it look like it is hollow ground - but it is a full-flat grind.

This one goes with me everywhere - I have not put it down except for last Sat. when I had to go into Chicago.

I am working on polishing the edge up - it came very sharp but I love to see how sharp I can get them. The ZDP is some tough stuff....

best regards -

Cool. Thanks for the info. ZDP will polish up nicely. I'm glad you're enjoying it!

anyone know what Rc they ran these blades?

Kershaw runs it between 64 and 66, and since they did the blade, I'd imagine that's where it is.

Hi ginaz -

The AGR web site concurs with SPXTrader - 64-66.

I work with a Gina Z..........I thought maybe she had joined the forum, but I know she is a SAK gal lol....

I received mine today and i am happy in every regard. It has clean lines and does not scream tactical. The blade is centered and it is razor sharp. The fit and finish is very close to my Umnumzaan. Overall it is a winner IMO

Very cool knife - I like almost everything about it. It doesn't have any of my pet peeves with Sebenzas (e.g., clip, tip up, thumbstud, blade steel). I'd buy one in a heartbeat if it weren't for the blade length and knife weight. I'd really like something more in the range of a small Sebbie in these regards. I can only hope that they might consider making a smaller version at some point in the future.

I really like that knife. The clip is what intruges me the most, I really love it. It reminds me of the clip on my Ontatio T.A.L.K 1 knife. It is the knife I can grab and pull out of my pocket the fastest. I want that Acies!

I did not mean it as a thread Jack. Just an appriciation of the Acies clip. If you do a search, I think my pictures are still here. :O)

Hi Kodiak -

The clip you show is not like the Acies in my opinion - the Acies really does disappear down in pocket.

After having it for a couple of weeks I really love the knife.

I have sharpened it up - took a good while as this is some hard stuff!

The knife comes out of pocket very nicely - and goes back in just as quickly.

The lock bar got a little "sticky", requiring more of a push to get it to disengage, but now it is smooth and fine again - not sure what happened there.

I will say that the knife is slippery - I have dropped it a few times, if you are not very careful to grip it it can easily slip out of your hand.

I also note that twice when I dropped it on carpet, the blade deployed partially.

I am still very happy with the knife - and carry it every day unless I have to go somewhere where it is not legal (*Chicago - cough*)

best regards -

Hi, your absolutly right. I just ment the way the clip lets your finger grab under the curve and pull it out of the pocket. It's a nice thought out feature.

Hi kodiak -

I got ya' - Yes - you can do that with the Acies, but what I tend to do is just put my thumb on the edge of my pocket, and my index finger on the bottom of the Acies (through my pants on the outside) and then press the knife up and out of the pocket.

I understand what you are saying now - and yes, you can do that with the clip on the Acies.

best regards -

Clip reminded me alot of the clip on my delica when I first saw it. Very well thought out, but a bit too shiny.

Beautiful design, don't like the black screws. Thanks for posting the review!
