A.G. Russell Acies

According to what I have read about ZDP-189, there is a good possibility of staining if the blade's not cleaned and oiled after every use.

ZDP-189's 3% carbon and 20% chromium etc content does render higher edge-holding capability. To be honest, I never had any first-hand experience with ZDP-189 or high-speed or tool steel bladed folders.

Living in the tropics with high ambient humidity and the fact I don't oil my stainless steel blades after every use brought me into a comfort zone I am loath to leave. :o

My folders are all in stainless (154CM, VG-10, AUS-8, SG2 laminated with VG-2) and they are used to perform light food preparation tasks (peanut butter/jam/chocolate spread sandwiches) etc. I value stain resistance a lot at the expense of edge-holding and ease of sharpening.

I hope what I have written so far can clarify what was left unsaid in my previous post.

I've EDC'd the Acies every day since it arrived and I haven't babied it at all nor taken any special care of the blade (haven't oiled it) beyond wiping it off after use. I live in Florida and our climate during the summer is like Vietnam but without the charm with very high humidity. You can just feel the all that moisture in the air and the weight of around you plus I'm often down near the beach to see friends whenever possible (we often cookout on their dock) so then the Acies is being exposed to salty sea air and sometimes spray and all I've done to protect the Acies is to wash it under tap water and wipe it dry.

To be honest, I'd read about the edge holding ability of the ZDP-189 and my hope was that it was also tough enough to use just as I have all of my S30V steel folders without any problems and it has done that perfectly. I've read on these and other forums that the ZDP can stain but I've treated my Acies just as I would any of my higher quality folders and the blade hasn't stained at all but what it has done is hold an edge better and slice easier/better than ANY folder I own. I have many titanium framelock folders and several of them are thicker and heavier than the Acies but done of them "cut" or "carry" better than my Acies.

I also have had mine for a while and have not experienced any staining of the blade.

I typically do wipe mine down after each day of carry but I do nothing special to it - thats how I treat all of my folders.

Our Maryland summers get quite humid and muggy, and this year we experienced record breaking rainfall so if it was going to stain / rust this would have been the year.

You guys are killing me with these rave reviews. I have been on the fence about this blade but I've just bought too many blades recently...

But...can someone tell me...how is the lockbar retention force? From one of the few Youtube reviews, that seems to be the only thing that MAY be an issue with this. It may not even exist, but it might also be a wee bit "soft".

Man..I'll have to upgrade my membership to sell off some of my blades to get this one!

The lockbar on mine would stick some at first but I used the ole' pencil lead trick until everything broke in nicely. Now lockup is perfect and the lockbar releases with about the same (maybe a tad less) amount of force as my other Titanium framelocks.

It's from A.G Russell, so if you don't like it you don't keep it....just send it back for a refund.

First time customers
First time International Customers placing orders for over $250.00 must establish a payment history by using a Money Order in U. S. Dollars. Once you have established a history we can accept Visa or MasterCard as the form of payment.

Regarding the credit card, my cards are all prepaid, so I have to transfer the cash. It will take a week to transfer the money from paypal, + the time of mailing the MO, or for a credit card the amount of time it takes to register a payment. Not a huge deal, I just have to wait an extra 7-10 days just to place the order... this is my unfortunate situation, and is in no way your problem.

I misunderstood the quoted info to mean ALL new customers, which might be a deterring factor for others in the same situation as me.

Sorry if I offended you, I was just frustrated that I have to wait so much longer to order my Acies... lol...

I am definitely sold on the knife, and appreciate the quick and thorough responses

Man, I have been fantasizing about this knife since it came out. My edc is a Featherlite. I've been saving my pennies, but still can't swing it. So if any of you gentlemen decide to sell your used Acies, PLEASE shoot me an email!!!!

I was told yesterday that there is only a bakers dozen of the Acies left in inventory. I will now have them remove one for possible future replacement. 12 only now left.

I have been EDC'ing my Acies for better part of a year now, every day since it arrived. As many on BF, I own a lot of knives and the vast majority are High Quality folders (mostly framelock) variety of shapes and sizes as well as blade and frame material.
I live a dual life as a Civilian and Military so the knife lives that along with me. Hard use as well as normal.
Most has been said but I will add, IF anyone is even considering a knife of this type and quality BUY this knife and I say that not really wanting to see them go away (I bought two) gave one as a gift and that is EDC'd as well.
IF you buy it and for some reason don't think it is the best all around EDC you ever saw, don't abuse it and send me a PM sometime in the future - it will find a home.

I had a chance to buy a gently used Sebenza at a street market in nyc at a super price but I passed. I knew that I would regret saving a bit longer and trying to get one of these.

And you're an awesome friend to buy one for a friend!

WOW! WOW! WOW! I call dibs on other peoples used ones first! :p

I hear great things about the Sebenza but like it has already been said - it ain't going anywhere. As AG has said, the Acies was a creation spawned from design elements taken (credited) to several world class knives, sebenza one of them.
When I first got this Acies (what will be referred to as my Full-Size Acies I guess) it was my first jump to EDC'ing a knife of this size. I didn't think it would become what it has, my true EDC.
I asked for (early on) a slightly smaller Acies. Now, I don't know. Call me fickle or just set in my ways but, now I like this size knife.
It really is a great great knife.

You are not helping at all! :D

Seriously, the points you make are valid and your comments on the Acies just add to my torment.

I've been pondering the Acies for months, and now they are down to 12.

I'm going go have to check my budget.
I know I will kick myself if I don't get one before they disappear.

I will say this in the form of a one line synopsis of what I have personally witnessed, I Do Not Know one person who Loves Knives that didn't start carrying their Acies as their EDC after getting one.
It simply exudes Icon attributes which in a way is not surprising being as "IT" was created from an amalgamation of facets of World Class knives.
Kudos to a World Class Knife Designer of Icon Status for doing what nobody else did.

i've been planning to get a second for some time, looks like i need to make a move on that now then
