A.G. Russell Hunter, Gunstock, Sowbelly Trapper

Kid,

PLEASE, return the knife to my attention, I will see that it is promptly replaced, A gap is NOT acceptable.

A. G.

Return the knife? I don't want to return the knife.:p

Thanks, A.G., but what I really meant was that it is possible to see that the liners and the bolsters are two separate pieces of steel. The gap is really a minuscule hairline thing, not a true gap. It's just cosmetic, not a manufacturing default of any sort, and I was only expressing a design preference. With solder, that line would disappear completely and the bolster, liner, and end cap would look like a single piece of metal, and I think that would look better and more in tune with the quality of the finish of the rest of the knife.

Thanks for the offer, but I'm in no way dissatisfied with the knife, quite the contrary. And apologies if my comments were perceived as that there was a manufacturing problem, because there isn't.

Sorry Kid,

I misunderstood. I too would prefer that look. It would add $7-15 to the retail price and that would cut sales.

Hopefully this will clarify the design details of the coil spring & the Striker Pin (blade stop pin).

I got to handle one of the sowbellys and one of the gunstocks last night. Both are very well made , hard for me to choose a favorite but as far as carrying , the gunstock would get the nod from me if I had to make a choice.

Think I will order the gunstock this weekend :)

Good to hear, thanks. It's mainly the large hunter I'm worried about, as mine has yet to clear Customs. :)

No, can't seem to manage that with the hunter, not that you would want to anyhow. I would guess that doing this might damage the lock mechanism.

as mine has yet to clear Customs

If its the gravity knife laws you are worried about, not a problem. The knife does have a backspring thats fairly stout and it holds the knife closed quite securely.

Thanks Arathol, good news.

Customs here sped a lot of time violently wrist snapping folders, trying to get the blade out. If they can open it, they keep it.

I don't do that with any knives, as you say, it can't be good for the lock.

BTW, Knifeworks tighten the pivots on Spydercos right down for me, so they can't be snapped open at all until I get them and loosen the pivot.

Can you guys with any of these 3 knives manage to flick the blade out with a good wrist snap?

I don't think it'll happen. These knives seem to have just enough retention, so as to make that unlikely. I've found it's light enough, that each can be 'thumbed open', one handed. But, if one were actually to flick it open with a wrist snap, I'd think it'd be difficult without losing control of the knife. That, and having to flick it so violently to open it, won't be good for the tang/lockbar in the long run.

Steven,

I am afraid that they will be able to get the hunter part way open.

Oh well, I'll see what happens :) If I get a letter in the mail from Customs instead of the Hunter, there is a process I can go through to try and get it in.

The knife is a limited edition, I'm a member of the AKC and I have a collection of rare knives with a docmented log book. Using that I can try and get permission from the Police to import the knife.

Fingers crossed!

Beautiful Knives and great pics.

Any chance of getting more pics? I'd like to see some pics of the opened knives in your hand to see how BIG they really are and how about adding some pics of them looking straight down on them?

Thanks

Oh man, I wish you didn't post all those pictures! I think I must get a Gunstock in Brown Rucarta now...yep, I've got to. Normally I say if it's not made in America I don't want any part, but this just seems like an offer WAY too good to pass up. And what's even better is A.G. offers a 25% discount to U.S. Military, firefighters, police, and EMTs. That's so outstanding I don't even know what to say. A.G. you sir, can expect an order from me in the very near future.

I'm now wating for a smaller version with a single blade, to make it thinner. Actually, I would love to see an entire line with classic patterns. With this quality at this price range, I would buy them all. :)

I am a potential customer where the size of this knife is beyond my preference/comfort range as well. I, too, would love to see a smaller version, single or double bladed are both fine (although the same blades is as the big one), be introduced. I am sure that others would like a smaller size as well.

I now have my "Brown" Rucarta Sowbelly Trapper and the leather "pouch" (sheath) that goes with it.

The sheath is nice and the fit very good, but the leather seems of lesser quality than with other AGR sheaths that i have.

The spring tension is surprisingly light, about a 3 out of 10, which makes the blades very easy to open. A relatively light tap to the spine however does move the blades off the fully open position, but these blades will not open on their own. i.e. the spring tension is acceptable, but were it even a slight bit less i would ask to exchange the knife.
The blade spine/spring alignment is very good, but not as seamless as on some of my other Chinese folders.

It's a very beefy knife and i like it.
